Diversity is and has always been extremely important to me personally and professionally. I have chosen to live in locations specifically that celebrate diversity and honor the differences of others. I am from a diverse upbringing and background so it is important that I surround myself with people who can help me grow and learn. Even in my travels and living abroad I have chosen places that were different than I am from so I could continue my lifelong learning. When working with others I believe a great first step is finding a common ground to begin from. Everyone brings a significant uniqueness to the table and it is imperative to have a mutual understanding and respect for each other especially when people often come from different perspectives
Diversity should be respected and valued because everyone is different and can offer an alternative perspective. Everyone should be treated equally because everyone has something to offer and everyone has a strong factor/skill that they can contribute to the company.

From my point of view, diversity means inclusion, which means our ability to include difference. Diversity does not mean race, nationality, gender or sexual orientation, it’s the way we interact and take those different from us. Diversity can also create curiosity. When I am exposed to different people and cultures, I like to learn more about the different groups that I have encountered. This helped me to understand how and why things work the way they do, it also led to the idea that we could find a way to make a difference.
I think diversity is great for teams and individuals. Most recently, when I began my current job, I went from a suburban environment to an urban environment. Working downtown allows for a more diverse workplace than in the Parma suburbs. I have learned so much from the ladies I work with now and feel like I now take in their experiences and knowledge when making decisions, either personal or work. In the beginning, there was a clash between each other but as we began to know more about and learn from each other, our team effectiveness grew and we became a well-oiled machine.

The more time I spend in diverse environments, the more I realize that harmonious diversity is highly difficult. More often than not, seemingly harmonious diverse environments only are that way because while people from all different backgrounds are in the same room, they naturally have filtered into groups that are like themselves, whether it be in terms of race, culture, beliefs, or other differences. However, simultaneously, I believe in the great importance of diversity. Although, like anything worthwhile, it takes work and an open attitude, it also makes you think about and enriches your world in ways that people similar to you will never be able to. When I hear the word diversity, I imagine the different colors of the rainbow each one representing the different skin colors, personalities, hair styles, food and a bunch of other things. Any combination of those makes us who we are and how we view the world. My philosophy is that you should be receptive and understanding to other people lifestyles and choices; you do not have to like everyone, but we need to be cordial and respectful. Differences in each individual is what makes each of us unique in some way. Throughout my life I have seen and met different types of individuals from different walks of life. Their paths may have differed from mine, but that never changed my perspective of respect towards others. Diversity influences us to join as one, although we may not have the same views. Varying opinions about how to handle a situation, makes a discussion necessary to choose the best one which means that the best idea should be picked. For an example, consider a marketing firm that is trying to make their client’s business appeal to a wider variety of customers. In this situation, diversity would be a great thing because each diverse employee should have an idea of how to market to their demographic. That is just one example of many where diversity would be a great thing to have within an organization.
