Differences in each individual is what makes each of us unique in some way. Throughout my life I have seen and met different types of individuals from different walks of life. Their paths may have differed from mine, but that never changed my perspective of respect towards others. Diversity influences us to join as one, although we may not have the same views. Although some opinions may differ, diversity has signifies a variety of different races, cultures, religion, beliefs etc to exist. It has simply impacted my life in several ways and I’m sure the world as well. Even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself helped fight for the rights of diversity in his time on earth. If our country engaged in diversity knowledge and equal respect towards the difference in others, the world would be a much safer place.
Growing up as an African american male in the urban environment of North Carolina, you could say that diversity wasn’t valued as much as it is today. Imagine a society where we’re all on the same page and respected the difference in others. The world would be more united and possibly safe if we could grasp the concept of mutual respect in different individuals. My concern for the world in reference to diversity and the opposers who have the upper hand of hierarchy. We see it in the media, hear it on the radio and in music, how certain hate crimes have divided us in our goal towards diversity. Diversity can be differences in race, heritage, customs, belief systems, physical appearance, mental capabilities; etc Diversity should be respected and valued because nobody is completely the same as anyone else, even within the categories above. People tend to reject what is different. We must value our diversity in order to work together.
The point is, we are all different. Yet the differences that we have between us can be used to strengthen society as we know it. Diversity enables us to have the opportunity to learn, develop, and understand different ways of living, and experience our lives to the fullest. Without diversity, we are closed or boarded off in our own worlds. But with it, we expand our knowledge and we are no longer ignorant. When you are aware of the differences and embrace them, then you have taken the blind fold off to living differently and you are a better person for it. The key is exposure and using what you learned to increase more tolerance and decrease things such as racism.

Diversity should be respected and valued, because nobody is completely the same as anyone else. It is everywhere in our lives which makes rich and varied. In our lives diversity can be defined as differences in heritage, race, beliefs, customs, mental capabilities, physical appearances etc. It should be valued because no one is completely the same as anyone else, even within the above categories. If diversity is not valued then it can lead to violence and hatred.
Blacks are more likely to be shot at the hands of police when compared to whites “A recent study found that black males are 21 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than white males. Examining trends from 1960–2010 for death by legal intervention by race and social class” (Gilbert and Ray, 2016). This deadly use-of-force is also has nothing to do with income as the study found that high-income blacks were just as likely to be killed as low-income blacks (Gilbert and Ray, 2016). The deadly use-of-force can also be linked to a bias “In shooter bias experiments, participants are instructed to make quick decisions about whether to shoot or not shoot Black or White targets in a computer simulation. The targets either hold guns or non gun objects,”(Hall and Perry, 2016).

When we meet new people, we create small talk discussing about interest, dislikes etc. this then may lead to a new friendships or another person to avoid. Our diverse thoughts, interests and experiences steer us to the people we are close to and love. If everyone was exactly the same our relationships would be meaningless because rather than having a two way relationship , it will be like talking to yourself. Also because everyone has their interests and experiences when we meet people who have similar interest and experiences, we can feel excited or relieved knowing there is someone who we can relate to. This then can create a special bond.Some may believe diversity can divide us because we may disagree on opinions, have different lifestyles, create subcultures etc. however ignorance is what divides us. We can become closer as a society by embracing everyone's differences rather than excluding others because of their differences. In other words with diversity will come unity.

I believe that "Diversity" plays important roles in our lives. Without diversity, we cannot widen our field of view. Diversity helps us to open up our eyes and our world. From reading the essay "How diversity makes us smarter", written by Katherine W Phillips, I learned that there are some negative effects brought up by the social diversity where dialog of inclusion is advanced, but mostly diversity is something that has positive effect in our society and even individual.
