The Ozark Mountains are characterized by eroded plateaus caused by the collision of the super continent of Gondwana, which compressed the present continents of South America, Africa, Antarctica and other land masses. These forces uplifted Arkansas with limestone and calcareous rocks such as sandstone and chert. Erosion lowered the surface creating a level plateaus which included: The Boston Plateau, the Springfield Plateau, and the Salem Plateaus. Rivers, over time, cut valleys into the plateaus. Present day Fayetteville-Springdale-Rodgers, Harrison, Mountain Home, Batesville, and Clinton are all cities which are within the Ozark Mountains boundaries.

The Confederates cut of Union supply lines angering Lincoln into sending General Grant and his troops into battle. The domes are indeed not mountains, but the visible portion of a massive batholith, a distinctly different formation. As the Texas Parks & Wildlife website notes, “The Enchanted Rock Batholith stretches 62 square miles,” and the great bulk of this formation is hidden deep below the earth’s surface (Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation). A batholith is a vast underground depository of granite, which in this case-- by means that I will explain momentarily-- triggered the formation of visible mountainesque structures. These structures are termed “exfoliation domes” for their several distinct layers, each of which has a unique composition. As Robert M. Hutchinson elucidates in his reputable article “Structure and Petrology of Enchanted Rock Batholith, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas”, this particular formation boasts outer, intermediate, intermediate central, and core zones, all of which possess slightly different mineral makeups under the larger umbrella of

The Appalachian Mountains were formed an estimated 480 million years ago, being one of the first plate collisions constructing the supercontinent Pangea. During the Paleozoic Era, the region was submerged, layers of sediment and carbonate rock began to form on top of the already submerging sea bottom. In the Ordovician Period, the Appalachian passive margin evolved into a plate boundary when another plate collided with and sank the North American plate, creating the Appalachians. The Mountains continued to form as volcanoes grew, plate collisions, all while the supercontinent formed. Pangea began its separation 220 million years ago, halting the creation of many mountain ranges. The Appalachian Mountains had almost flattened completely out,
