Responsibility means having an obligation to deal with something. Some people feel honored to take responsibility, but most people want to run away from it. In the book, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the author describes what happened in her life starting from her earliest memory. Together with her family, they strive to survive whatever life throws at them. Most of their decisions are made by her dad, Rex Walls, who is also incidentally the root of their problem -- or at least the majority of them. He is a highly skilled and intelligent man but with little to no sense of responsibility and resistance to temptations. We can see this when he was teaching Jeannette, when he tried to stop drinking alcohol, and when he was driving their car as fast as it could go.

Responsibility is a key component in establishing a person’s character and a vital part of human existence. Of the three definitions the Oxford Dictionary provides, the one of most relevance is; the opportunity or ability to act independently and take decisions without authorization. I have learned that when someone trusts me or holds me responsible for something and I do not do it, I lose that person’s trust and it would be very hard to get that trust back. Responsibility in a person is a must as they can be more trusting and dependable if they have even the slightest amount of responsibility unlike those who don’t have any they can be lacking in many things and most people will see them as drags on society. This responsibility includes those of the personal and social nature. On a personal level, we have to take care of ourselves and stay healthy and happy individuals. Socially I strongly believe in the saying, do unto others, as you would like them to do unto you. Abiding by this rule helps society to operate as smoothly as possible without too much conflict. Besides, it is not worth any minute of our shirt lifetime to be unhappy or rude. We as humans are able to make conscious, individual choice and take responsibility for our actions, beliefs, feelings and attitudes. And I believe that we need to exercise these abilities.
