Overall the paper well explained the context of the e-bike system. The author truly delivered the paper with good ethos, pathos, and logos. Started by informing the reader who they are, they built up a credibility. Their pathos comes when they used so many techniques such as compare and contrast, narration, and process. The logos were being delivered on their scientific method where they use testable questions and empiricism technique. The simplicity makes the writing looks concise, but at the same time it is easier for the reader to understand the article. Connection, trust, and facts make up the basis of how to persuade, which is vital for science, writing essays, and many other fields. Trust is depended on bias and experience of a subject, this is a tool of persuasion called ethos. For example, Mr. North (a teacher who has taught for many years) would have a more convincing ethos than a new teacher on the subject of students. While ethos is important, facts and statistics, logos, are considered more trustworthy than status of a figure. Logos include evidence that are supported to help prove a point, a fact or statistic could be: students are more likely to succeed if they are working in groups. The first paragraph reflects a tone of disbelief and confusion. Disbelief is expressed in this line, “I had never thought that a person’s ethnicity was ever important in this country”. It expresses disbelief as the narrator never thought ethnicity was important in today’s world and it turned out that it was important. This next line expresses confusion, “I don’t know exactly how to take those comments”. It expressed confusion over the statements made back at the narrator as the narrator is not sure how to take these comments.
Aristotle believed Rhetoric’s main purpose was to persuade an audience. (Rorty 1996). Aristotle claimed that there were 3 main appeals that the persuader would use in order to convince the audience that their view is the right one, or that their product is the best. Aristotle would argue that these arguments all have a basis in “common sense”, meaning that the persuader can come to a conclusion based off of the audiences shared, and agreed upon knowledge (Gregoric 2007). Logos, Ethos, and Pathos are the three type of appeals Aristotle uses to describe the rhetoric of persuasion.
Rhetoric’s are used in every occurence of our lives whether we are aware of them or not. From the way we greet new ideas and thoughts, to the way we function with already existing notions, regardless, rhetorics have incorporated into our daily life from the first few months of our lives. The dictionary recognizes rhetorical to mean ‘the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.’ What’s the main concept to explore of rhetorics, are the main uses and techniques that are commonly used.

Ethos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s ethics. If a reader can see the credibility in the writer’s opinion they are likely to believe their argument. Pathos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s emotion. Pathos is often used to evoke an emotional response from the audience.

It is important to always know what is the whole point of reading and understanding the text. Many authors and writers aim for appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos. The reason to this is that their main goal is to gain trust, impact emotions, and use logic to get the reader to believe in them.
Rhetoric is the idea of persuasion. Its basic idea is to influence someone to believe in our idea or help understand the message we are trying to deliver. In our daily life we use rhetoric in many places. This includes verbal communication as well as non-verbal communication such as body language and facial expression. In the workplace it can be used to communicate with people effectively.
Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful combination of ethos, pathos, and logos conveys Beatty’s story convincingly.
The least effective text is “Handwriting Matters; Cursive Doesn’t” by Kate Gladstone. In the text the method of appeal that is used most effectively in the text is logos. Kate Gladstone used logos the most throughout the passage and she didn’t use ethos and pathos as much. The three methods of appeal weren’t balanced throughout the passage which made her text less effective. A piece of evidence that demonstrates this is found towards the middle of the passage, “Adults increasingly abandon cursive. In 2012, handwriting teachers were surveyed at a conference hosted by Zaner-Bloser, a publisher of cursive textbooks. Only 37 percent wrote in cursive; another 8 percent printed. Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. It is important that she uses all three devices because they help support her argument by increasing her credibility, connecting to the readers’ emotions, and appealing to their sense of logic. The combination of these devices puts a sense of urgency on the problem Ehrenreich is addressing and therefore creates an effective argument.
In the introductory chapters of the textbook I recognized some of the basic concepts outlines from having taken a previous speech class while also being introduced to a few new concepts. In the first chapter the passage that cover pathos, ethos and logos I one of the first things that I remembered from my prior speech class. The concept of ethos in particular has caught my attention and has made me reflective upon the qualification I attribute to individuals based on societal teaching that may at times subconsciously infiltrate the way in which I receive people and also the presumptions I may have about them. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. I left some of my comfort writing the campaign paper using all 3 and it gave me a better understanding as a writer to keep in mind who am I talking to, what message am I trying to get across
Technology and the way it’s being utilized has changed rapidly in the past decade. Phone, tablets, and computers have become more accessible, which changed the way simple tasks are completed. Phones largely have revolutionized the daily lives of everyone, to a degree where it has begun to affect our posture and demeanor. In Jane E Brody's editorial, "Posture Affects Standing, and Not Just the Physical Kind", she clearly informs readers on the negative effects of electronics on everyday life; effectively using ethos, pathos, and logos in her explanation.
Persuading someone could be hard, especially if they are close minded. I know that when persuading someone, I have to know the person whom I am trying to persuade because people are persuaded differently.
