I took the 2017 summer semester Writing 101course at UMUC. I took this class as an elective and because I enjoy writing. I am glad that I chose to take this class and could learn from it. While taking this class, I learned a lot about what I did and did not know when it comes to writing. I also learned some areas that I need to improve when writing papers. When I began this class, I was aware of how to format a paper using double spacing, as well as what font and sizing was required. I did not know, however, how to use APA formatting. In high school, all the papers I had to write were formatted in the MLA style, so learning how to use APA was a little challenging at times. I had never had to use a running head and the citations were different, both in text and on the reference page. Another thing that I learned from this class is how to use an online library. I had never used a database like the UMUC Library before, so when it was required for some of the discussion boards and papers, I had to watch the tutorials and find out how to use the database. There are also a lot of things I found I could improve when it came to writing papers. My grammatical errors could have also been avoided if I had slowed down when typing or had proof read my paper more carefully. Also, I could learn a little more about parallel structure and how to incorporate it within my papers. I also had some difficulties throughout the class. While the class came relatively easy to me, I did run into
The Presidential election of 2000 was a legitimate election. Throughout the entire ordeal of the recount in Florida, Presidential nominee, Al Gore, never took the lead from George Bush. There were four counties in Florida that the Democrats were trying to get recounted. Only 18 out of 67 counties were actually recounted (1). After election day on November 7th, Bush was ahead 2,000 votes; however, the problem was that there were 175,000 ballots declared uncountable because of hanging, dimpled chads or clogged up machines(1). Therefore, Gore’s campaign demanded a recount of all the ballots in counties that said that they voted for Gore. The whole thing lasted about six weeks because the Democrats kept asking for an extension, which the Florida
Overall, I believe I have benefited from taking this course. I am thankful for the writing assignments which exposed me to APA writing and citation. Likewise, I became more effective at researching, the reading of, and paraphrasing journal articles. I felt that adequate time was given for class assignments. Likewise, the power points were very helpful while reading the chapters from my textbook. It was helpful that paper assignments lined up with current reading in the textbook. I liked the fact that discussion boards were not the only way we interacted with classroom content. The example papers were a big help when completing writing assignments. Finally, the things I will always remember from this course was the positive feedback
This year in our English 1010 class, we covered many different genres and types of writing. We covered how to write personal narratives, how to respond to other students and other forms of writing, and how to professionally write essays. Briefly, we touched down on how to write argumentatively and were also required to create an infographic, wish was probably my favorite assignment. Although I never thought of myself as a strong writer, I believe that this class has greatly improved not only my writing skills, but my thinking skills as well. This was my first English class to be taken through dual enrollment and I believe that it went quite successfully while challenging me as a writer.
I have written more in the past year in this course than I probably wrote throughout high school career. This class made me notice that prewriting really does make a difference in the end result as well as having a peer critique your paper. Instead of writing a quick paper and just handing it in, I was actually forced to take the time out to write a rough draft, read my own work out loud, and revise my work. It helped me make my writing more organized and have a better flow throughout my paper In the future, I will continue to use this method as well as visit the many resource we have on campus that can give feedback what can make my paper better or just checking for grammar errors, spell check, and sentence fragments.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
In the course English 101 at Capital Community College I was able to develop my writing very well. I enjoyed my first class at the college level but there are some things that I didn't find favorable. I put forth my best effort most of the semester and it's really shown in my grades. All my major essays have shown progress. Im satisfied with how far i have come as a writer and i do plan to take English 102.
For this process reflection I am going to start with is what influences my writing and my process for writing. After that I will go a bit into what I’ve learned so far in the course and how that has add some influence on my writing as well. That being said isn’t all of our writing a reflection of ourselves? I’ll come back to that idea at the end if there’s room with this double spacing nonsense.
In August, I began my journey as a college student, as well as a Writing 101 student. I was unaware of what the class would entail, but more so, was unaware of the growth I would begin to see in myself as a student over the following four months. My commonplace book showcases my growth as a writer and as a learning- oriented individual. My five chosen tags encapsulate my semester over time and most importantly demonstrate several skills, specifically exploration and argumentation, that I will be able to use beyond this course and continue well into my future endeavors.
During this semester, I have learned a great deal about my own writing, and writing in general. One of the main takeaways from this course for me was how to break down the intricate process of writing papers. In addition, I developed viable skills regarding going into more in-depth detail during each step of the writing process. I enjoyed having the freedom to write about a topic that I was able to choose. This allowed me to research and write about something that actually interested me immensely. Having to work with one topic for the entire semester taught me how to find reliable resources and how to pick out the essential research from each article.
In my writing career, I have taken English classes throughout high school and a composition one class at my local community college. These classes have helped get me where I am today and has shaped me to become the writer I am now. There is plenty of room for improvement and I am hopeful this class will improve my knowledge. Although I have never excelled in writing, I try my hardest to do well at it.
Introduction to University Writing was a very informative class. I gained much needed knowledge and criticism that will definitely boost my writing skills. The first thing that stuck with me was, formatting an essay. When you break your essay down into at least three main paragraphs, introduction, body, and conclusion, your essay flows better and will be more neat (Chambers, 2015). Number two would be using the enter button to separate your paragraphs. This wasn't part of the class but it was detrimental none the least. The most important thing I learned was time management. Identifying obligated time, identifying free time, and analyzing it all to perfectly balance out your day, can bring better results (Chambers, 2015). This class taught me, not giving myself efficient time to complete a project leads to mistakes that are often overlooked.
I can 't believe this class is almost over; summer went by fast. I am happy that I learned numerous concepts that have helped me improve my writing, such as grammar concepts, APA format, word choice, persuasive essays, and cause and effect essays.
Job analysis is a broad term commonly used to describe a wide variety of systematic procedures for examining, documenting, and drawing inferences about work activities, worker attributes, and work context (Siddique, 2004). In light of recent workplace changes that devalue traditional conceptions of rigidly defined jobs, the broader term, work analysis, is sometimes supported. However, there are three different types of job analysis and they are job requirements, competency based, and rewards (Siddique, 2004).
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.
Reflecting upon my previous work over this past semester I have discovered some reoccurring themes that threaded throughout my weekly writing assignments. I would be the first to say that I am a “writer in progress”. As a young student, I received special education services in literacy and math. My early struggles with literacy has seeped into my writing as I have continued my academic career. Being given the opportunity to take the time to reflect upon my work from one class over a period of time and receive consistent feedback has been a first for me and something that I need to do on my own from now on to grow as a writer.
