Chris McCandless was a brave person who got what he wanted which was peace, even if it killed him. He impacted so many people’s lives with his story and every year people visit from all over of where he died and Jon wrote the book and described him in a good way.
In “into the wild”, Jon Krakauer characterizes Christopher McCandless as self reliant and adventurous. Chris McCandless is a self reliant person because he doesn’t like to ask anyone for anything and likes to survive on his own without help from anyone or anything. From into the wild this quote states, if you {Jim Gallien} don’t take it {the watch}, I’m going to throw it away. I don’t want to know what time it is. I don’t want to know what day it is or where I am. None of that matters(7). Saying he didn’t want to know the time he was saying he didn’t want help from anyone and he didn’t want to worry. In my second quote it states, “ Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a

In a quote from the book it states , “He explained that he wanted a ride as far as the edge of the Denali National Park, where he intended to walk deep into the bush and “live off the land for a few months.”(4). Chris wanting to walk into the woods by himself and live by himself for months, shows that he’s adventurous and doesn’t care what happens. Another quote from the book states, “ In the years since, he’s been in the habit of taking it on an extended solo road trips when classes weren’t in session, and during that graduation weekend he casually mentioned to his parents that he intended to spend the upcoming summer on the road as well.(21). Chris taking road trips by himself every chance he got, portrays that he wanted to be by himself, away from everyone and explore new places and things. Chris being adventurous is important, because if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have died and there wouldn’t be a book about
For him, spending a year or two in the Alaskan wilderness was his way of doing that. In my opinion, Chris had every right to go into the Alaskan wilderness and Shaun Callarman had no business questioning Chris’ right to do so. Shaun Callarman talks about romantic silliness. “...going into Alaska with his romantic silliness” (Krakauer, 1997) At what point was Chris trying to be romantic? He was just trying to find himself and escape the life that brought him so much pain. He wasn’t on some grand quest for some romantic journey.
He spent several months wandering the southwestern United States and even explored Mexico. This “experience . . . made him confident he could harvest enough food to survive an extended stay in the Alaska wilderness“ (Krakauer 162). Chris’s success near California influenced his decision to survive in Alaska. Although Chris may have been a little overconfident in his abilities, he was still able to gain some experience living in the wilderness alone. Chris’s journey to the Alaskan frontier was important to him.
His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior, which in April still lay buried under winter snowpack” (Krakauer 5). Showing that Alex (Chris) had almost no food in his bag indicates he was not well prepared for dangerous travel. He can not live off of rice if he can not score game for a long time. This proves him to be careless also because the gear he had was not in the right condition to be used for a long term event like this one. And this is probably one of the main reasons for the death of Chris so young and so early into his
In the story we know that Chris wanted to go into the wild. No matter what anyone told him he did what he wanted to do. He just stuck to his plan and didn’t change
Chris McCandless once said, “Tramping is too easy with all this money. My days were more exciting when I was penniless and had to forage along for my next meal. The freedom and simple beauty of it is just too good to pass up”. In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into The Wild, views of whether someone needed money in life or not differed throughout the book. Jan Burres, who was a rubber tramp that picked Chris up off the side of the road.
On page 71 it says ”Entering the wilderness purposefully ill-unprepared, and surviving a near death experience does not make you a better human, it makes you damn lucky.” Therefore if his way of going about things were different he might have been able to actually survive. So it is clear that Chris is foolish for not being more prepared and accepting of help when offered, it maybe could’ve changed his
of achieving our purpose in life can be a daunting but awarding task. Christopher McCandless
“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” (Krakauer, 56) In the quote it’s showing how Chris believes joy comes from traveling and gaining new experiences, which is the exact definition of wanderlust. McCandless even says, “The core of a mans spirit comes from new experiences.” (Krakauer, 57) Chris was always trying to find new experiences that would enhance his life. He believed that he wouldn’t truly be happy until he was away from society with no restrictions. All in all Chris can easily be described as wanderlust, because the foundation of his life was the desire to
Christopher McCandless was an adventurer no doubt. He spent the last few years of his life living purely off the land and exploring, doing what he felt called to do. However, to venture off on such an intense, dangerous, and wild journey, a person most likely has some deeply thought out reason as to why he or she is embarking on the mission. Chris himself seems to have had some reasons, besides his curiosity, as to why he explored. However, he made a decision to leave without truly thinking about just how dangerous his journey was going to be. Due to his rash actions, Chris eventually died in an abandoned bus out in the wild. Now, some folks today think that Chris was a hero for doing what interested him and for doing his own thing without worrying about the trivial things in life. However, I have reason to believe that Chris was indeed not a hero. Instead, I believe that Chris McCandless’s journey into the wild was rash, ludicrous and foolish.
Chris Mccandless’s motivation was for staying in the woods was for the excitement and rush. Chris is known for many of his specific traits as a person. His stubborn nature or arrogant personality but, one of his very apparent attributes were his self-reliance and his love for nature. He found nature to be an unknown. An unknown that he would turn into a familiar territory. According to Chris, “Tramping is too easy with all of this money. When I was penniless and had to forage around for my next meal.” (Into The Wild 33). Christopher enjoyed the wild because you had to take risks and you always had an adventure every day. Christopher Mccandless stayed in the woods for the excitement and the daily adventure of the woods
After graduating from college, McCandless had left his Datsun, donated all his savings to charity, and burned all the spare cash he has on him, and took off. Leaving Chris McCandless behind, and beginning the life of Alexander Supertramp. Alex had made lots of new friends that he had grown bonds within a short amount of time, such as Franz, Gallien, Westerberg, etc. But Alex had obstacles and messes that he had gotten himself into.
Again we see Chris’ love for nature in chapter 12 when he takes a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, as Krakauer states, “. . . but he had been smitten by the vastness of the land, by the ghostly hue of the glaciers, by the pellucid subartic sky,” (124). Chris’ trip to Fairbanks can explain why he chose Alaska as his final destination, it was it’s profound beauty that captured Chris almost into a trance that made him go back.
Chris McCandless was in no way, perfect, but he was passionate for his beliefs and had the courage to follow through with his dreams.
Some say that Chris was an idiot for going out into the Alaskan wilderness unprepared and without any knowledge of nature. “Why would anyone intending to live off the land for a few months forget boy scout rule number one: Be prepared” (krakauer, 71). This was a complaint sent in by a Alaskan hunter, and there were many more that followed that. The people writing the negative comments all believed that Chris either wanted attention, was stupid, or went out on a suicide mission. However, Chris was none of those things, he wouldn’t have been able to survive 113 days off
Peace is defined as freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. This is what many people experience in their final moments on Earth while they are surrounded by their loved ones. But is it possible for someone to die in peace by themselves in the middle of the Alaskan bush? Chris McCandless brought forth this question when he died of starvation on the Stampede Trail in Alaska. His death creates this question because of the fact that he died alone, but was he happy with his surroundings. Chris died at peace because his life had a purpose and he will forever be away from society in the wild.
