During the decade citizens saw positive actions committed by government officials such as ending the Vietnam War and negative actions such as the Watergate scandal. America itself was built on the concept of adapting to meet the changing needs of society; its government outline was created so that the people could change laws when they needed to be changed, although the process is slow so as to avoid laws that are poorly thought out or do not represent the views of most American citizens. At several points in American history, there are times where only a few groups were fairly represented in government, and therefore, the needs of all the people were not represented accurately and we could not get the change we needed to happen. This is where civil disobedience comes into play - by peacefully and respectfully disobeying unjust laws that oppress American citizens, we get the attention of government officials who can do something to change the laws and right the wrongs that have been committed. Some well-known examples of this are the Women’s Suffrage movement and the Civil Right movement, as well as some recent examples, such as the Standing Rock protesters. By using peaceful protesting, we draw attention to injustices and garner the support and strength to say “no more”.

Peaceful resistance to laws can have a positive effect on society. While any specific activity needs to be analyzed on an individual basis, civil disobedience is a useful healthy aspect of democracy. It allows for people, particularly a minority, to force important issues into the public spotlight while minimizing harm. This movement fought for equal rights for the African American society. Another example would be the women’s march which helped bring awareness to the current issues women have been facing. Both of these movements are examples of the people exercising the first amendment. Though we cannot see the lasting effects of the current movement, we can use the Civil Rights Movement as an example that shows positive changes from peaceful resistances.

Anytime one goes against the norm, they will be persecuted. Society wants everyone to be similar, be quiet, and go with the flow. It is the people who go against those norms and fight for freedom that progress our society. Without them America would be a 21st century society stuck with 18th century ideals. As long as people are not injured physically, resisting unjust and undemocratic laws are important to free society. There have been many examples in our history that prove that one can resist peacefully without disturbing the rights and liberties of one's neighbor.
