Ever since the American Revolution Americans have resisted against laws that they view as unfair. The resistance of laws can either be done peacefully like the Civil Rights Movement or violently like the American Revolution. Peaceful resistance has a positive impact on the free society because it has the ability to get to congress and have laws changed to make them fair for everyone. The Civil Rights Movement peacefully resisted segregation laws and was able to change those laws and lead towards integration.

Peaceful resistance has been debated over and over for it's supposed threat to society and the harms it can bring. People against it have long since said that to be non-violent simply means to be defenseless. But does and should it have it's own place in society?

Rosa Parks went against the Jim Crow laws and would not give up her seat for a white man, who was at the time her superior because she was a black woman. She was arrested because she refused. I hold this belief because as humans we can be flawed in our ways of thinking and require something to draw our attention for us to realize our flawed views. Peaceful resistance is positive because it draws attention to an issue in society, it communicates a level of civility, and it attempts to initiate a positive way of addressing issues in society.

Abraham Lincoln famously described our national foundation as a “government of the people, by the people, for the people”, and for such a statement to be true, it is necessary that voices of US citizens be heard.

Resistance is seen as a taboo thing to many people because it means raising your voice when it is quiet and it is know that many don't like the noise. However, peaceful civil resistance has made a change throughout history. Although many feel like peaceful resistance is detrimental to a free society one cannot avoid the fact that does make a society more aware of issues pending in the country.

It allows us to make our voices heard and spread a message if there is a law that we find is either unfair or goes against our protected freedoms. Obviously, this is a form of treason, but people like Snowden are trying to show us what the government is up to. One of the main complaints about our government is that they do many things in secrecy, and they hide and censor lots of things from us. Whether it is positive to society or not, we do not know at this point.
