What I Hold Dear As a college student I am confronted with many different beliefs and ideologies. The exposure to all of the different beliefs and ideologies has, at times, challenged my personal belief system forcing me to reexamine what I hold to be true. It is in those moments that I resort back to that which I view as sacred for assurance and use as a gauge by which to measure and test these new ideas. Whether it be the Holy Scriptures that contain the written explanation of my faith or one of the tenets contained therein, I find both knowledge to defend my personal beliefs and assurance to stand on what I believe is truth. While there are a number of aspects of my faith system that are treated with great respect and held in high …show more content…
While the Holy Bible is filled with many different types of writing, including history, narratives, poetic literature and apocalyptic, it forms a cohesive theme that tells me where I, and all things originated from, as well as my purpose in this world. Because the Holy Scriptures give, what is to me, a plausible understanding of who I am and how my life matters, I have discovered that I want to align my life and future in accord with its directives and commands. The reason that I hold these writings with such high regard is because the Holy Bible says of itself that God breathed it out onto men to write down and that it contains the very instructions needed for me to live a life that is honoring of God and worthy of what God deserves. II Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”. For this reason, the Holy Bible has taken on a role of great importance in my life and because it is the very revelation of God, revealing who God is and how God has worked and continues to work throughout history, I have determined that it is foundational to my faith and a practical guide to direct me in determining the course I should take in this life.
Using proven facts and methodologies, the author supports her argument that various faiths can coexist outside of a singular perspective. Ward acknowledges every faith has defining guidelines followers must embrace, but maintains the
This book review is from the readings of Biblical Inspiration by Howard Marshall. The book is published by Regent College Publishing located in Vancouver, and British Columbia published the book in 2004. The book is braces around the interpretation of the Bible, and the inspiration of the Bible in our lives of today. There are many questions that are brought up the book, and these include: Is the Bible infallible? How do we interpret the Bible today? is its inspiration believable in and biblical criticism believable? All of the different opinions on biblical issues equivalent to these bring up issues and questioning within the community. It is Marshall’s goal to try and produce a statement that is concrete of what the Bible says in our lives today.
reading community” (115-116) Scripture when read as a story of what God has done and is doing today, gives us a complete picture of God's reconciliatory plan for humanity. This is very significant for me because by being aware of all scripture as the grand story of God no book or chapter is less significant because the book is part of the grand story of God. I will still struggle with some books like the Songs of Solomon, but after acquiring this new perspective from right, I can read the book with new lenses and try to figure out it connects to the story of God, but I believe I can only do that with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Its scriptures are used as the declaration of God’s word. The bible scriptures give clear guidance for most of one’s decision making. No one has to spend a lot of time brooding if God would be satisfied with the choice that he or she will make about career or any type of decisions. The confusion comes when one can not perceive a direction from the biblical scriptures that is God’s word (Barnes, 2010). Biblical scriptures give one strength, understanding and confirmation for most problems, decisions, faith, a repetition of history, understanding of today’s time, and predictions. The bible gives a universal standard for ethical behavior (McMinn, 1996). Horton (2009) suggests that people who support biblical understanding for spiritual discernment the root of their decision making should be based on biblical standards because the bible is sound, reliable and it is God’s holy word.
Before the gospels and Pauline epistles, early church Christians related to the Old Testament as Scripture and viewed their Christian walk as the fulfillment of the promises made to Israel from the Old Testament, which foretold of the coming age of the Messiah. The first New Testament Christians understood the importance of the Old Testament; it was their “Bible” they preached from. Just as in the early church, Christians today need the Old Testament for preaching and in which to reference and understand Christ’s purpose for why he came.
The Holy Bible, one of the most influential and important books in the history of Western Civilization, if not the world. It is a central part of the lives of an estimated 2.4 billion people, the scriptures are described as “the Sword of the Spirit” in Ephesians 6:17 and are the basis of Christian theology. Obviously, the Bible is of great significance to anyone who wants to know about God, the Gospels or Christianity. That is why, as the first post in For the Love of Jesus, I want to go over seven key reasons to study this amazing book.
The Holy Bible, as we have learned in this first lesson, indeed is a book for today. It is the mind of our great God in heaven, showing us how God thinks, and more importantly, how He wants us to respond and think.
The history of how the Bible came into existence has been explored for centuries and is an active area of study today. There are many facets to the Bible and each has its own set of unique characteristics and teachings. The Old Testament is considered a contemporary guide for daily living, even though it was composed hundreds of years ago. Where did the Old Testament come from? What are some of the influences that shaped the Old Testament? What are the significant events of the Old Testament? In order to gain a better understanding of the Old Testament and its message to Christians, special consideration is given to its historical and cultural context, and to the major milestones in its development. Personal application of the teachings offered in this section of the Bible should be the aspiration of all Christians today.
I believe that scripture is the infallible Word of God, divinely inspired by God through human hands, for the teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training of Christians and forming the basis of the Christian life and guiding them on the path to Christ. I believe that scripture is infallible rather than inerrant, because human writers through which God spoke can still make mistakes. However, Matthew 24:35 reminds us that God’s word is true in all ages and places. 2 Timothy 3:16 gives reasons why it is import for believes to use the scripture such as teaching and correcting. Scripture guides us along the path we should as evidences by Psalms 119:105 comparing Scripture to a lamp to show us the way. I have also personal experienced the wisdom that the scriptures can offer to those who need guidance. I also believe that scripture should be the main point of guidance, which is something that my church has taught me such I was young. Matthew 7:24 instructs us to build our house on the rock (scripture) which is the most solid place to rest our life.
As a college student I feel that I already bring basic skills such as reading, writing and problem solving to my college experience. I also feel that I have many support from my family members that contribute to my success in college. From personal experiences I haven’t had people in my educational past misjudged me. My high school teachers would tell me that I’m a good student, listens well, and an ambitious person. I feel like this is not always the case for me, what they didn’t realized that I had to fake a positive attitude, stay self-motivated and go head on with my assignments without a stable mindset. In order for me to be successful in school I wish people knew that I have a fixed mindset and I want to develop a more growth mindset. I want to have a real positive attitude, communicate effectively and set a good sense of priorities in both college and my life.
In the study of Christian theology, scripture plays an essential role in the revelation of the Doctrine of God. Scriptures are “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) words, written by the Holy Spirit through divine inspiration of prophets. They are necessary for the proper understanding of the doctrine of God, the self-revelation of God, the proof of God’s existence, and for the discernment of false doctrines.
This text has shown me that my beliefs impact the way I see the world, the people in it, and that my thoughts and actions are inevitably affected by them. As I move deeper into my studies, I am learning the importance of this, and of bringing my whole self into whatever situations I face. Societal values are constantly changing, but Christian values remain firm, as they are planted with biblical roots (Keith-Lucas, 1987, p.3).
In doing so, we can discover that final authority is not in and of scripture itself but of the Triune God who is the Author of scripture. The second obstacle to consider is that many have dismissed scripture as a book of Israelitic & Christian stories. Wright contends that these stories are told to inform us of “internal dynamics” of the past so as to engage us in the present for transformation into Christ-likeness. (p.25). Thirdly, Wright asserts that the question of scripture’s authority should not be viewed as a list of rules where God condescends to man. Rather, scripture should be received as God’s purpose to save and renew the entire world by authorizing the church—God’s agent in the world—with His mission through the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, it is imperative that biblical scholars “see the role of scripture not simply as being [informative about or revelatory of God’s truth] but as a means of God’s action in and through us.” (p.28)
Application of the Word of God- Living right by adhering to the word of God. Therefore within our church persons participate in personal bible study called a “quiet time” we read the bible along with other literature to aid our understanding, we meditate, take notes on what we can apply to our lives for that day base on what is read. We pray for direction and guidance in being obedience to the Word of God. Therefore, we believe that Word of God is the final authority on all matters and it equips us for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
My life as a student has been a fairly good one. I’ve received good grades throughout all my years of high school and pride myself as an intelligent individual. But my individual ability to grow and learn has been always changing and shifting as I have grown. I think that currently, I am at a low point in my mindset and learning ability, but there is hope on the horizon. This essay will explore the growth and mindset of Will Roser, and how I can grow as a learner, friend, and individual.
