With so much of my focus set on finding new friends, I never really thought about the academic side of school. In elementary school, I was always smart enough to never have to do anything, which as you can imagine set up fantastic studying skills. 6th grade was easy enough, but seventh grade my grades were blighted. As a Salem Freshman, I was required to take a “Signature” Salem class; a class that was “signature” to Salem and Salem alone. These classes were chosen based on a survey given to students before they get their schedules and all of them are rather “worldly”. At the time, I was unaware that the this “Sign” Classes were fully graded and fleshed out classes. I simply chose a class that sounded incredibly interesting without thinking about how well I would actually perform in that field. I chose a class that offered to challenge the way I think about others and how they think; a class that could help me understand people more by showing me how they come to believe things. Despite my initial confusion and eventual grade, I admit that I don’t regret taking the class because what I learned in that classroom was something I don’t believe I would have ever experienced otherwise.

Learning that school is something to be glad about was one aspect I will never forget. School helps spark and form the character of discovery in one’s mind. Concludingly, the first trimester of public school was a real learning experience with mostly a C average in most of my classes which left room for improvement. The second trimester I had an understanding of school and was trying more and more on improving how I could understand teachers. This time of education at public school was the aha moment wherein I could explore the true reasons of presentations, tests and open book exams. The third and final trimester was a matter of consistency in grades. Because of this, most of my trimester average grades were in the B+/A range. Remembering how school was for me always makes me think of my mother. I never wanted to leave the house, as she was severely ill. I never wanted to leave for long periods of time. I would always think the worst in the back of my mind, What if? What if she needed a drink of water and was unable to get it? What if she had an episode and was unable to get to the phone? What if the worst was to happen and I got back home to my mother not ever being there. This was a challenge for me daily. School is supposed to be a safe environment for a student to a student to learn. It can also serve as a shelter to keep kids off the street and away from negative influences such as crime. Especially in the inner city urban areas where gangs, drugs, and violence may sway kids to do the wrong things. Also in today’s society it is difficult to find jobs. There are many people that graduated from college with degrees who still have not found their ideal job.

When I was a kid, school for me was waking up early in the morning. I also have to study a lot in school, then after school I have to do homework. I remember my first day at school. My mom and dad, both were so happy and prepared but I was so nervous and cheerless. I didn’t like to wake up early in the morning for school , but as time flew by I started loving school which made me wake up with energy instead of tiredness. I began to enjoy the school as I made new friends and I got to know how it is like when you meet people out of your neighborhood. With my friends I had lunch together and study together. I started to understand what the purpose of the education system. Based on what I understood I think the purpose of education is really aimed at helping students get to the point where they can learn to be on their own. In this journey of education I had a lot of positive and few negative experiences,but the negative experiences also helped me growing. Positive experiences are my teachers helping me improve, and I improved more when I moved to the United States.

When people start high school they’re usually so excited. They can’t wait to experience everything that comes with being in high school, I mean who wouldn’t? Everyone says that high school is the best four years of your life. Time and time again I've found myself declaring education as the central pillar of my growth and development, that of which has been consistent throughout my life and educational career. From the age of 8 I've attributed school and learning as a way to escape the outside world, both willingly, and as an involuntary coping mechanism; school was a refuge, a safe place where I could build healthy relationships and escape my worries. I felt valued by my teachers, and I was given opportunities to contribute to a community, and for the first time felt autonomous- and that I could control my future.
