Sexual Assault Of School Settings

School is an environment for those who want to learn, and receive an education. Schools are an equal place for everyone to learn, and try to understand one another. People of all color go there to learn how to read, write, and become a great person in society. I believe that school does have its flaws and caveats. In a book called Rereading America there are passages that my classmates and I have been reading that really opens up your mind, and views about school and education issues.

Every year seniors graduating high school in today’s society eagerly await the responses from college admissions departments from across the United States hoping to read these three words you’ve been excepted! Even though each individual prospective college student has spent countless hours planning their college experience which includes their newfound Independence from their parents, new friends, parties, sororities, fraternities, and lastly their classes. Throughout this process the overwhelming excitement coupled with being naïve these prospective academics haven’t thought about sexual assault on College campuses or possibly becoming the victim of sexual assault most importantly the reality that regardless of a students age, ethnicity,

Which in an interview presented in the article authors, Kim K. P. Johnson, Sharron J. Lennon, and Theresa Lennon Schulz, Hegland and Johnson (1995) mad an interview with 41 rape survivors to determine how many women were actually assaulted for wearing sexy clothing. In which the majority stated, the outfit they were wearing the day they were rape had nothing to do with the fact of being raped. As well as mentioning that these women did not choose the outfit they were going to wear that day as a means of sexual consent or sexual advances. With these results it demonstrates that in reality all the assumptions and myths created by society in particular women does not affect if a women’s particular attire will cause sexual harassment. It is the assumptions that society has created within themselves to maintain a justification for women who wear sexy clothing. A women who wears tight fitted clothing, or “sexy” attire does not make her a potential target for sexual harassment, nor does it make her responsible because there is no prove to show that this is the case in every myth a stereotype. It is just assumptions like many others society creates within to establish a justification for why a person expresses their own free will.

As students graduate from high school they begin the journey of getting ready for the University they want to go to and get excited for the best time of their lives. As anybody on campus the last thing they want to be worrying about is whether they will be sexually assaulted or not. It is becoming clear that University's around the United States needs to broadcast what sexual assault is and why it isn't okay. In most cases, many campuses do not have an effective way to stop sexual assaults. Nobody wants to be a victim in a sexual assault case. Assuming nobody wants to be the attacker in a sexual assault case results to sexual assaults on campus must stop. University's must take the proper precautions to help stop campus assault. In the article, "Male students are victims of sexual assault, too" the author writes:

Sexual assault on college campuses is an extensive topic that has concerned people for many years. The high rates and the case report cover-ups have brought about many varying opinions. Many people believe in changing the college framework to establish universities that are better equipped to deal with this issue. Others feel that the problem could be addressed by changing society’s outlook on crimes like these. While another group feels that the problem is in how we define rape. Despite these differences in opinions, one thing is clear, everyone agrees that something must be done to reduce sexual assault on campuses.

This essay explores the ongoing issue of sexual assault and sexual violence on college campuses across the United States. Education on the topic of sexuality and sexual assault throughout secondary and post secondary education is vital to the awareness of, and battle against sexual assault. Issues in sex-education, included lack of depth into healthy sexuality, and abstinence only sex education. Women are not reporting their cases to the authorities or universities because of issues with privacy, shame and guilt. Universities are not providing reliable support to victims, which creates wide spread apprehension to report cases of sexual assault. Pop culture and media promote a skewed image of sexualized women, creating a cultural expectation for women to please and be subservient, promoting sexual violence against women across the country.

Merriam- Webster defines sexual assault as an illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent or who places the assailant in a position of trust or authority. Most common types of sexual assault are “acquaintance rape” and “date rape”, which both take place on college campuses but go unnoticed. There are several incidents that occur on college campuses that students that attend that particular college or university are not aware of. Sexual assault is a major issue all around the world and needs to be taken more serious. This is a topic that many do not discuses because they may be afraid of what may happen to them if they speak out. Recent studies have shown that sexual assaults on college campuses are a major problem.

In 2014, Buzzfeed News came out with an article titled, “Sexual Assault Survivors Answer The Question “What Were You Wearing When You Were Assaulted?”, was a huge headline a couple years ago. In response, many of the survivors answered with responses such as pants and a plain t-shirt or a sweater and with sweatpants. That just shows the simplest clothes can attract a potential assaulter. For many years sexual assault has been a huge social topic amongst many individuals, especially with young females in school settings. In which many females are the ones who are blamed for being assaulted due to them wearing “provocative” attire or being in area around the wrong “timing”. A school is a place where people should be able to go to for a quality education. Find their clique or friend group that makes them feel accepted. A school can also act as a place where someone meets their high school sweetheart. Most of all, school is there to prepare students for the next few steps in life after they graduate. In reality, the following generations are having to handle intensifying conditions within their schools. One major arrangement would be the shift in who does the disciplining. The Security Resource Officers, or SRO's, are now the faces of discipline. Students get arrested for minor incidents such as; talking back or having side conversations. Instead of talking to a teacher, or seeing the school counselor, they get reprimanded by the law.

The school, is a place to learn and do many other things you can have friends and there are many fun things you can do in the school, like playing on the playground or have free time and you can play on games and you can choose French, German, or Mandarin for your 3rd language, also in the school there are many boring and bad things, like if you behave badly and we start bothering and star saying bad words they would give you a misdemeanor and if you accumulate 5 misdemeanor’s you will get detention and if you accumulate 10 misdemeanor’s you will get point of discipline and if you get 3 points of discipline you will get expelled from the school.
