Commentary 2 The passage, written by a passenger who was on board the Titanic when it sank in 1912, is written in present tense, the voice of the writer is calm, and her speech is formal. The passage has a mixture of long complex and short sentences. The author utilizes repetition, imagery, and diction to effectively illustrate her thoughts and emotions during the sinking of the Titanic. The author uses repetition to emphasize ideas or events occurring throughout the passage. For example the writer would say the word “no” followed by an action, an adjective, or a noun. In paragraph two she says “No confusion, no noise, no danger, no excitement, and no one.” In paragraph three she states that there is “no laughter.” Her use of repetition in this way accentuates the idea that “no” means no. Everything is going wrong in that moment. The author also repeats phrases with similar meanings as a use of repetition. In paragraph three the writer wrote, “So gruesome a scene” and “Nothing escaped one at this fearful moment.” The reason she does this is to readdress a message or an idea without giving the impression that she is being repetitive. In paragraph 2 the author is extremely descriptive which pulls the reader in. one of the lines she wrote reads “her hand shook so that the bread kept parting company from the chicken”, instead of telling the reader the lady was nervous, she brings her audience into the scene and describes it to us. Her use of imagery shows how observant she was throughout the whole catastrophe. Another form of her use of imagery in paragraph two is when she wrote “I saw heads appearing asking questions from half closed doors”,this shows how confused people were during the situation.
