Commentary 2 The passage, written by a passenger who was on board the Titanic when it sank in 1912, is written in present tense, the voice of the writer is calm, and her speech is formal. The passage has a mixture of long complex and short sentences. The author utilizes repetition, imagery, and diction to effectively illustrate her thoughts and emotions during the sinking of the Titanic. The author uses repetition to emphasize ideas or events occurring throughout the passage. For example the writer would say the word “no” followed by an action, an adjective, or a noun. In paragraph two she says “No confusion, no noise, no danger, no excitement, and no one.” In paragraph three she states that there is “no laughter.” Her use of repetition in this way accentuates the idea that “no” means no. Everything is going wrong in that moment. The author also repeats phrases with similar meanings as a use of repetition. In paragraph three the writer wrote, “So gruesome a scene” and “Nothing escaped one at this fearful moment.” The reason she does this is to readdress a message or an idea without giving the impression that she is being repetitive. It reminds the audience about what her experience was …show more content…
In paragraph 2 the author is extremely descriptive which pulls the reader in. one of the lines she wrote reads “her hand shook so that the bread kept parting company from the chicken”, instead of telling the reader the lady was nervous, she brings her audience into the scene and describes it to us. Her use of imagery shows how observant she was throughout the whole catastrophe. Another form of her use of imagery in paragraph two is when she wrote “I saw heads appearing asking questions from half closed doors”,this shows how confused people were during the situation. Instead telling her story she shows her
Visualizing the scene of this tragedy proved to be an effect strategy Beller used to illustrate his tone. The visualizations the author provides generates the specific ideas Beller wants his readers to recognize: “The whole street paused, froze, screamed, and some people broke into tears, many people brought their hands up to their mouths, everyone was momentarily frozen, except for the ashen guy, who just kept walking¨ (Beller, 62). This perception of the crowd creates an image in readers minds. With that image accepted, readers can more fully grasp Bellerś chaotic tone.
The narrator comes into the kitchen to see a huge mess and her mom in the middle of it. As she is walking in a piece of the debris almost hits her in the head. “I ducked as a piece of tile flew at me”. This already raises the tension in the story because the narrator has already almost been injured by a flying piece of tile. From the mothers point of view nothing is wrong and waves it off as it is was nothing which angers the narrator even more. “ I pushed past her to get the broom, but she grabbed me by the elbow. A feeling of nervous ness swelled inside me.” If that is not enough the narrators mother decides its the perfect time to tell her that in the next few days she will be leaving her mother and going to New Mexico for 3 months. “ But what am I supposed to do? That’s three whole months” The daughter is steamed because she is going to have to move again to a new place were she has not friends, but from the mothers point of view she is sending her child away so she can be safe while she going off to work in a unfamiliar place. The mother cannot see the situation from her daughters perspective that is why the passage progresses the way it does. It eventually leads to them fighting and the daughter locking herself in her room. If only the mother could have seen the daughters perspective then maybe she would have taken a different approach leading to a different more positive
Transition: Now that I have discussed the titanic itself, let’s take a look at the tragedy that struck it on its’ maiden voyage.
Is Mayella Powerful? Power is relevant in several different ways; however, there are three main elements of power. Some have power in their gender, race, or social class. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee writes about people and power. Specifically, the character of Mayella Ewell charges a black man with raping her.
The poem, “Death of a Young Son by Drowning” written by Margaret Atwood was awfully sad and tragic as it described the death of her son and its lasting effect on her. The speaker begins the poem by describing how her son was brave, adventurous and led with success. However, the mood of the poem quickly changes as the young boy slipped off the bank and into the water. From there, the boy struggles in the water before eventually drowning. As he is pulled out of the water the mother realizes that all the plans that she had for the future are over and that a part of her has died alongside her son. Atwood uses multiple types of figurative language that gives this poem a sense of realism and really shows the reader the devastation and heartache that occurs after the loss of a child.
These paragraphs inform the the readers about the writers purpose by using diffrent types of imagery in order to create a personal imagine inside of the reader"s heads. This gives the reader a better understandinmg of what the author is trying to make a point about. For example stated by Jenny Allen, "lie down and stare at the ceiling hoping that if they will focus all of thier thoughts and energyon the
Baldwin, Hanson W. "R.M.S. Titanic." Elements of Literature. Virginia ed. Vol. Fourth Course. N.p.: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2005. 328-46. Print. The Short Story : “R.M.S. Titanic” In this short story about the Titanic, several warnings of icebergs were sent out to the ship, but the captain disregarded them. The passengers of the ship continued to go about their usual activities when all of a sudden the ship shook. It was too late to change the route of the ship due to the warnings of the icebergs. The ship had sideswiped one and its compartments began to fill with water. The race between life
The sinking of the Titanic has become one of the most well-known disasters in history, because of the terrible loss of life and the demise of what everyone believed was an "unsinkable" ship. As is evident from reading this report the use of substandard rivets was the main cause of the failure of the Titanic. By substandard we mean that the type of rivets used was incorrect as well as the location of these rivets.
Interpersonal communication plays a major role in everyone’s daily life. Because it is so important, theorists have developed two views about how to determine whether a transaction is interpersonal or not. We will be looking at the situational and the developmental view by applying it to a scene from a movie in order to determine which one is a better indicator. The particular scene that will be discussed is a scene from James Cameron’s Titanic. The scene takes place the day after Jack sees Rose hanging off the edge of the ship while she debates whether she should jump or not. Jack convinces her not to jump, and she agrees. But, her foot slips and Jack saves
The sinking of the Titanic is one most well-known shipwreck in modern day history and it's still being written and told about even a century later. The causation of the sinking has been debated heavily since the crash in 1912 and many so-called experts of the titanic disagree with another on this issue. There has been new development when the ship was discovered in 1985 and examined by experts. Leading people that the sinking was caused by three major turning points. The first being the failures of White Star Line who manufacture the ship starting in 1909. The second being the crew of the ship that had some very serve flaws in the plan of action leading up to the disaster. Lastly the passengers who had enough time to prepare before the
“Because of marijuana prohibition, America’s largest cash crop is grown exclusively by unregulated criminals, often in environmentally damaging locations such as national parks and wilderness areas. Such problems are virtually unknown with legal, regulated crops such as tobacco or wine grapes.” (Marijuana Prohibition Facts, 2008)
Repetition means the purposeful re-use of words and phrases for giving an effect This technique is commonly used throughout this poem, examples of this are; “All day, day after day”, “They’re high, now, high and higher”. By repeating the above words at various points throughout the poem it tends to create an atmosphere of normality. This is used in the poem to emphasize its significance in the entire text it’s not just distinguished as a figure of speech but more as a rhetorical
Everyone has heard about the sinking of the Titanic. Lots of people have seen the movie, and even though the movie does not give specific information, it gives an idea of what happened that day. Researching the event of Titanic sinking is heartbreaking since so many people died. Because the sinking happened so long ago, about 104 years, it is starting to become irrelevant. People should still remember the people who passed away and what occurred on the event. After all, what occurred on 9/11 is still highly brought up and recognized every year and half the amount of people died on the Titanic and is hardly mentioned anymore. The Titanic sinking is an event that doesn’t even seem like a real event to many people. Schools should teach more about the Titanic in history class because it is a real event that happened, and completely opposite from the fake love story everyone has heard of. There is some evidence that the Titanic and another ship, the Olympic, were switched, but there is proof that the boat was indeed the Titanic. Neither the boat nor the people were switched, unfortunately, so the people who were on the boat, did pass away. The theory of the Titanic being switched with the Olympic has been debated quite a bit, but the ships were not switched.
On April 14,1912 a great ship called the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage. That night there were many warnings of icebergs from other ships. There seems to be a conflict on whether or not the warnings reached the bridge. We may never know the answer to this question. The greatest tragedy of all may be that there were not
a) To Joe’s horror his step sister, Agatha, has written to him claiming half his lottery winnings. When Joe first started playing the lottery his step sister had contributed half the cost every week and they had often talked about what they would do with their respective shares of any winnings. Agatha had not contributed anything the particular week Joe hit the jackpot. Joe assumes he does not need to pay her anything and needs confirmation of the legal position.
