The Titanic - History of a Disaster On April 14,1912 a great ship called the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage. That night there were many warnings of icebergs from other ships. There seems to be a conflict on whether or not the warnings reached the bridge. We may never know the answer to this question. The greatest tragedy of all may be that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board. According to Walter Lord, author of The Night Lives On, the Titanic could have been saved in the very beginning of the crisis when the iceberg was first reported to the bridge. If First Officer Murdoch had steamed right at the iceberg instead of trying to avoid it, he might have saved the ship. The author feels there would have been a loud …show more content…
The Captain was going to have to make a choice as to who would be the first allowed on the lifeboats. Around 12:30 a.m. the bridge informed the crew that only women and children would be loaded on the lifeboats (Eaton,Haas,152). By 1:30 a.m., there was panic among some of the passengers. One example was on the port side of the boat. A group of passengers threatened to jump into a boat full of passengers. To scare them, one of the officers fired three shots on the ship's side. The warning proved to be successful. Nobody was injured and the passengers calmed down (Eaton and Haas 154). At the last moments with only forty seven available spaces on the last lifeboat, the crew instructed everyone to form a circle around the boat. Women and children were the only people permitted to pass through the circle. A little while after the last lifeboat left, the stern lifted clear out of the water with more than 1500 people still on board (Eaton and Haas 157-161). The climatic moment came at 2:20 a.m. The Titanic stood perpendicular to the water. As people in the lifeboats looked on, they noticed the ship stayed perpendicular for a minute and then disappeared to the bottom of the ocean (Lord, Lives on 137). Captain Rostron of the ship Carpathia determined the distance to the Titanic and quickly calculated the course to answer the Titanic's distress call
What caused the“unsinkable” R.M.S Titanic to capsize down to the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean and kill an abundant number of people? The “ R.M.S Titanic” sank due to an assortment of obstacles; however, it can be narrowed down to a few critical things. The survival of people was based on availability of lifeboats and wealth class. Mr Joseph Bruce Ismay was a wealthy businessman who built ships. Mr. Ismay made it away from this tragedy because of his wealth. An iceberg along with the crew’s ignorance and unreadiness caused the R.M.S Titanic to sink to the depths; however, Mr. Ismay along with other wealthy people along with some poor made it out alive.

In Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat," the four men underwent an experience in which they endured the forces of the sea that caused them to change their perception of nature and ultimately brought them to see the conflict between humanity and the natural world. In the beginning, faced with the restless sea, the four men felt that outside help existed somewhere. The cook was the most certain that they would be rescued. In his argument with the correspondent, the cook told him, "There is a house of refuge...and as soon as they see us they'll come off in their boat and pick us up" (NA, 358). Soon after they saw the lighthouse, the four men were optimistic that their destiny was not to die, and that somehow another power, in the form of
The sinking of the Titanic is one most well-known shipwreck in modern day history and it's still being written and told about even a century later. The causation of the sinking has been debated heavily since the crash in 1912 and many so-called experts of the titanic disagree with another on this issue. There has been new development when the ship was discovered in 1985 and examined by experts. Leading people that the sinking was caused by three major turning points. The first being the failures of White Star Line who manufacture the ship starting in 1909. The second being the crew of the ship that had some very serve flaws in the plan of action leading up to the disaster. Lastly the passengers who had enough time to prepare before the
The titanic was said to be the largest most luxurious ship at the time, also known as the “unsinkable”. After three years of building this huge luxurious “unsinkable ship” the titanic was to begin its first and only voyage. On April 15th, 1912 the titanic struck an iceberg causing the biggest disaster in modern times. The sinking of the Titanic took many innocent lives, it was said to be an unsinkable ship till 5 days later after it left for its first transatlantic voyage.
Before heading to New York the Titanic stopped at Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland (History). On the night of April 14, 1912 the Titanic was heading for New York, but the caption saw that the ship was heading for an iceberg so he made the ship turn away from it. The caption thought he missed the iceberg but seconds later everyone heard a big boom (Folwer). When the caption went to go check everything out on the ship he found out that five hull compartments have been flooded. Everyone on board had to put on a lifejacket.
After four days of being on the Titanic, disaster struck. At about 11:30 p.m, a crewmember saw an iceberg heading towards the ship, but luckily it just floated right past. The next iceberg they saw would be the one to take thousands of lives. There are no reports of anyone seeing the iceberg coming towards them which is why it was a shock to everyone. By the time the captain could observe the damaged area, five compartments of the ship were already starting to flood.
Have you ever heard of the R.M.S TITANIC? At its time, the Titanic was advertised as The ‘Unsinkable’ Ship. "Even God himself could not sink this ship," said one Titanic crew member. Unfortunately, the ship was incapable to live up to its name. The effect of the ship hitting an iceberg, was that it began to sink. Some people believe that the cause of the ship not being able to survive the iceberg was the design of the ship. This tragic disaster shortened many lives.
The iceberg left gashes on the ships steel hull then causing the floods in different compartments (William Kaufman). Going back to the negligence of the warning signals, the captain and officers were largely at fault for not receiving the messages and acting upon them. If some action would have been taken much earlier the ships sinking would not have occurred. The ship started receiving messages about the iceberg noon on Sunday, April 14 then another at 9:30pm yet it wasn’t till 11:40pm that the iceberg was noticed by people on the ship.
Captain Smith ordered the lifeboats to be uncovered at 12:05 am and sending calls at 12:10 am. Passengers were tired and didn’t get into the first lifeboat until 12:45 am. Soon it became obvious that the ship was sinking and many fought for their lives to get on a boat. The water first filled the boiler rooms and no passenger rooms. The boat then lifted up and broke and lifted up into two pieces, the top half pointing to the sky. Passengers got many injuries from running around in panic in fear of their lives. Some people even threw furniture overboard and would jump in after it, hoping it would float. After saying their goodbyes, men watched as the wives and kids were boarded onto the lifeboats. Some stepped of the lifeboats to let others sit and mad no effort to save themselves, they later went to an honored grave. . However it became obvious that many could not fit and find safety on a boat. The remaining passengers and crew were given life jackets, but life expectancy would be slim when they were exposed to icy cold waters 4 degrees below zero. As they jumped in they quickly died in the water from a heart attack or slowly developed symptoms of hypothermia. After the ship was slowly sinking the search for survivors began, using lifeboats they passed through the frozen people. Survivors were finally rescued around 4:00 am on April 15 by the ship Carpathia. The ship steamed through the night at high speed and considerable risk. The ship rescued 705 people, leaving 1,522 passengers had died along with the

We all heard a big, SCREECH, and everyone went crazy. Thank goodness we all survived. We wanted to get away from home and not have to go see all the brats at school for awhile so we decided to take a vacation. It was fun in the beginning and it ended up interesting and scary.
