Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a neurological disorder. It happens when there is a lack of vitamin b1. It’s more common in those who are heavy drinkers due to the fact that those who drink often, usually have a lack of thiamine (vitamin b1). It can also occur in those who have other disorders such a malabsorbtion, cancer that goes through your body, AIDS, or extremely high thyroid levels. A severe lack of thiamine causes microscopic bleeding throughout the brain and causes scar tissue to develop. If a person is diagnosed with WKS but does not have a drinking problem, the doctor will want to rule out other disorders or surgical procedures that can cause a lack of vitamin b1. They will have skin changes such as dry or flaky skin. There is limited treatment for it Korsakoff syndrome. Doctors recommend taking an oral supplement that has additional thiamine in it. Or if the condition is severe, they can do injected thiamine. Doctors and scientists say that it is rare, but possible, to have only one episode of the condition and make a full recovery. Wernicke’s syndrome happens when there are lesions on the brain. Like Korsakoff syndrome, Wernicke syndrome also has multiple symptoms. The most common ones are double vision, loss of muscle coordination, and being confused easily. When the two conditions combine, they form Wernickie-Korsakoff syndrome. With that condition, symptoms include blurred vision, having difficulty understanding information, putting words into context, and exaggerated story-telling …show more content…
However, there are tests that can be done to help make the diagnosis. They can do a blood test that will let them know the levels of the vitamin b1. Liver and electrolyte levels will also be checked along with vitamin b1 levels. If the doctors are thinking it is WKS and there is a severe lack of that specific vitamin, they know they are going in the right direction. They can give do an EKG, give you an injection of vitamin b1, and then do another EKG to see the difference and abnormalities before and after the injection. They can also do a CT scan to check for brain lesions. Fine motor functions are impacted by the disorder. Hand and finger movements get slower and harder to do. Sense of smell and taste can also be impacted. It also causes weakness in the muscles, which causes slower walking, eye tremors, and even paralysis of the eye muscles. Because WKS makes it harder to retain information and hard to remember things, most people with this condition get frustrated, aggravated, and can get angry
Metabolic alkalosis is a condition in which the body fluids have excess base. The kidneys and lungs maintain the proper balance of chemicals, called acids and bases, in the body. Decreased carbon dioxide or increased bicarbonate level makes the body too alkaline. There are different types of alkalosis such as: respiratory alkalosis, which is caused by a low carbon dioxide level in the blood. This can be due to: fever, lack of oxygen, lung disease, or liver disease; hypochloermic alkalosis is caused by an extreme lack or loss of chloride, from prolonged vomiting; hypokalemic alkalosis is caused by the kidneys’ response to an extreme lack of potassium, this can occur from taking certain water pills. Compensated alkalosis occurs when the body returns to the acid-base balance to normal in cases of alkalosis, but bicarbonate and carbon dioxide levels remain abnormal. Symptoms of alkalosis can include: confusion, hand tremor, light-headedness, muscle twitching, vomiting, and numbness or tingling in the face, hands, or feet. Treatment for alkalosis depends on
Many individuals with an autistic spectrum condition experience sensory difficulties so they may have a heightened sensory awareness so are not able to function in the same way as someone without the condition. Sensory overload is a common complaint of people with ASD and can lead to an inability to function if the noise is too loud or the light is too bright etc.
Visuospatial skills-problems judging distance or seeing objects in three dimensions; navigating stairs or parking become much harder.
The first indissoluble settlement in present day America by the name of Jamestown was founded in 1607. When the colonists arrived to this new land, they discovered they were not the only ones present on the land; they soon encountered the Powhatan Indians which had inhabited the land many generations throughout the centuries. Life for the colonists in Jamestown was not very joyful despite finding new land; the people instead faced illnesses and lack of food. For a time period during 1609-1610, the supply of food was so scarce, some humans ventured into cannibalism in order to keep themselves alive. ("Jamestown: Facts & History." LiveScience. TechMedia Network, n.d. Web. 17 Sept. 2016.). While fighting to survive in their “New World,” the colonists’
As mentioned above this disease affects three areas of the brain; the language (difficulty with
These symptoms include double vision blurred or, seeing stars, sensitivity to light or noise, headache, dizziness or problems with equilibrium, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping, fatigue, confusion, difficulty remembering, difficulty concentrating, or loss of consciousness (Abreu, Edwards, Spradley,2016).
Korsakov's syndrome is a devastating impairment of recent memory that is caused by a thiamine deficiency which can result from alcohol abuse, mal-absorption, hyperemesis or starvation. Furthermore, other causes of Korsakov's syndrome also include heavy metal poisoning, head injury and tumors. A patient suffering from Korsakov's syndrome will most likely have an extensive pathology in the bilateral hippocampus and will actively exhibit confabulation. Confabulation occurs when a patient creates pseudo-memories about what happened during a forgotten episode. Also, during confabulation the patient's recall of the events of the past seem more imaginative than logical. Fortunately, although the patient may exemplify confabulation there
Some of the most common symptoms include a of loss inhibition (saying or doing things which are socially inappropriate), reduced empathy (problems understanding and responding to the needs of others), problems with planning and organising activities, increased distractibility, changes in food preference (a propensity to eat large quantities of sweet food) and a tendency to develop compulsive rituals (e.g. watching the same movie repeatedly).
The person may begin to have trouble with figures when working on bills, with understanding what is being read, or with organizing the day's work. Further disturbances in behavior and appearance may also be seen at this point, such as agitation, irritability, quarrelsomeness, and a diminishing ability to dress appropriately.
The criteria that need to be met in order to diagnose FS are: a positive family history, onset in the 40s or 50s (can be earlier), progressive neuropsychiatric or neurological complications, typical radiographic calcifications in the areas of the brain that control movement, and the ruling out of other causes. The other causes that need to be ruled out include normal blood biochemistry (i.e. no calcium of phosphate metabolic derangements), no infectious, traumatic or toxic causative factors and no other genetic conditions such as mitochondrial disorders.
Wernicke encephalopathy, a disease that alters brain structure, and Korsakoff syndrome, a memory loss disease, are two conditions that frequently afflict victims together. The sickness occurs in individual who lack vitamin B1 most often due to alcoholism but also because of malnourishment. The condition can also occur in individuals with illnesses or after weight reduction surgery.
Symptoms that may be expressed include memory loss, mood swings, slurred speech, depression, and death usually from heart disease or pneumonia. There can also be steady downfall of the person mental health. This also can destroy two small regions of the brain (the putamen and the caudate nucleus) that help control movement.
Other symptoms include the person having trouble making decisions and having a sudden burst of confusion.

Ms. Gladson’s future classroom will incorporate a healthy mix of fun and organization. While thinking over the seven procedures I would like to implement in my classroom, it was important that I recognized the organized environment of the classroom, but also allowed for positive interaction among the students. From entering the room to leaving at the end of the day, there are important steps that even seventh graders need to remember in their classroom. I will allow one week of training; in which they will learn the procedures but receive a grace period if not completed correctly. Then, at the start of week two, I will expect them to complete it on their own. Each procedure teaches an set of expectation that I hope to see from each student.
