Albert Einstein once said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” This was reflected in my capstone project. I did something new, I made mistakes and I learned a lot. I learned how to be organized, write a paper using first-person sources, how to manage my time wisely, and about my chosen topic, Von Willebrand Disease. I also ran into multiple difficulties along the way. Despite all the struggles, I learned many things about writing, Von Willebrand Disease, and how to overcome struggles without completely breaking down.
I learned many new skills while doing the work required for the Capstone Paper. I learned how to write a functional thesis statement. In the past, I have struggled with writing a thesis statement, but this time I wrote a good one easily. I also learned how to tie in visual aids into presentations to help my audience to better understand my topic. I think my poster which showed the blood clotting process helped my audience see how the lack of the Von Willebrand Factor can affect clotting, and making the poster helped me better understand it too. I also learned how to present for a long period of time without making people fall asleep.

I learned about Von Willebrand Disease, what it is, how it is different from Hemophilia, how it affects people both physically and emotionally, some of the daily struggles, and how DNA and genetics are connected with such diseases. Learning facts about my topic allowed me to discover things I have an interest in. For example, learning about how gene mutations can affect one’s life so much inspired me to use my interest in genetics to possibly find a way to cure or make life easier for these patients. Reading about how they struggle day-to-day put things in perspective for me. I realized my personal struggles which I think are the end of the world, aren’t nearly as bad as it could
It helped me to have a broader view in my field of competency and to find new ideas from people who shared their own.
Named after the doctor that discovered the disease, Erik von Willebrand, von Willebrand Disease (VWD) is known as the most common clotting dysfunction affecting 1 out of every 100 to 1,000 people (NHLBI, 2011). In 1926, Dr. von Willebrand began to study a family that had a history of easy bruising and prolonged bleeding time (Mot, 2016). In 1985, the most significant progress was made in the research of the disease characterizing the von Willebrand factor gene which has led to an improved understanding of the genetics of VWD (Lillicrap, 2009).
I really enjoyed reading about the inventions and discoveries. It opened my eyes to my heritage, it initiated me to take more pride in being black. When I was younger I use to feel inferior and in a sense ashamed of the color of my skin; everyone looked at me differently and doubted my abilities. No matter how well I did athletically or academically I was still overlooked due to the color of my skin. People that I encountered assumed that I was uneducated, that I came from a low-income home or was a delinquent. Growing
I learned how to write an academic book review. This for me was one of the more complicated portions of this project. I’ve never been introduced to one until this class, so it was a new concept
I learned what Mass Challenge is about, how it works, its importance, and got an idea about who it serves. I have learned how successful Mass Challenge is and how selective they are, which
What I would the most important thing I learned was how to write a research paper. This was something that I had never encountered before, so this was new to me. The very idea scared me at first until I realized it wasn't as bad as it sounds. I found effective ways to make a good thesis statement and also make and use source cards.
I learned more about the Greensboro Four, also known as the A&T Four. How they would just average students just like me who were fed up about the segregation going on in a nation where it states in the Constitution that every man was created equal.
changed my point of view on my education. It has helped me realize that my education is relevant
“Change is the end result of all true learning”. Leo Buscaglia could not said this phrase any better. Learning new things is my biggest feature in life and I continued to show the effort to learn new information this semester. The moment I stepped my foot in English 111 First Year Composition, it has been a humbling experience. As the semester closes, this class gives me a better opportunity to look back at all I have accomplished with. In the beginning, I really was not interested in the course because reading and writing is not my strongest suit, but I did ended up liking this course after all. I appreciated the bad grade I received on one of my papers because it has aided me in becoming a better writer.
Writing is a process that I have struggled with throughout my entire life. Last semester in ENGL 1101, I slowly began to understand the writing process. However, I still struggled with developing my essays. One aspect of writing effectively, that I feel I lack, is confidence. Last semester, I was slowly becoming more confident, but as the due date for this semester’s first essay approached, that little confidence seemed to disappear. The structure of the course, however, helped in gaining my confidence back. My first official writing was a biography for the portfolio. This allowed me to introduce myself for my professor. In less than a week, the major writing assignments started. As I finished one essay and began the next, I slowly gained confidence as my teacher encouraged my writing ability. One aspect of the writing process that was extremely helpful for building my confidence was the revision stage. Although personal revisions were helpful, the peer revisions were the most helpful for me. After the final essay, I felt much more confident in my ability to write. I believe I have become a much more effective writer, and through the structure of my portfolio, this will become evident.
I always compare my writing as a late bloomer. My writing is developing, ordinarily it will be perfected with time. After taking this class, I figured out the importance of being able to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a comprehensible format. There was always little time I spent trying to figure out English language. Coming from a Hispanic family that the primary language is spanish, it's consequently difficult for me to understand the “rules” of English. Until this day I feel that I have learned something new every time I practice writing. Although there are several different ways of portraying my thoughts to an audience, I always feel it's difficult for me put my thoughts on a paper, as simple as it seems. Because I never really enjoy writing I didn't write much at all until I took EWRT 211 this quarter.
To begin with, I really enjoyed learning more things about myself because it is not a usual thing I do, and it was really interesting. This was interesting because I discovered my changes that occurred and also the changes that were to come, I found this really interesting. Secondly, I got a lot of motivating vibes from this activity because of the fact that I was excited to pursue my career path (future) and it also made me more curious. This motivation made me think of life goals like becoming a successful person. To summarize, two things that I really found interesting was more knowledge about myself, and the
Overall, I learned that writing can help to drive out the negative feelings I have by writing the personal narrative. My favorite assignment was the interview, Keith is such a sweet man and it made him feel good that he helped me get an A. When we did the pear reviews, I learned how to make my research paper better by how the others wrote
I learned that it is okay to go through stressful times in life and struggle. Depression and anxiety is not something to be ashamed of but it is something that I can grow from and be stronger because of it. That having ADHD
Our first writing project asked us to tell a time in our life that we experienced which affected the way we thought about the role of education in our lives. This topic was a literacy narrative, which was something new to me. Before this class, I was used to writing papers on a certain topic or a paper that analyzed a text. Instead, this paper has us write about our own life and thoughts. The experience I chose was about a time when two men came to change our refrigerator and told me to stay in school or else I might end up like them. Writing this paper was different from writing any other paper I had before. This time, I got to write in first person and include my own thoughts and commentary. Normally, I would have to do some research or analyze text and then go into detail about the meaning of that text. Writing this was something new and interesting. I learned how a story should be written and how to incorporate dialogue. With these new skills, I further developed my writing skills, which made me a better writer. Out of all the paper my did this year, this by far was my favorite. I really liked how I could talk about my own thoughts and experiences. In the end, I received an 85 on this paper. For my first time writing a paper like this at a college level class, I was pretty satisfied. I realized my grammar could use some work, so that was something
