Starting off with Project 1 this semester was an interesting learning curve for myself. I was worried that I would struggle with this book not being a very avid reader. The Doctors’ Plague was captivating enough that I was not only able to follow along but also able to summarize almost every chapter very well. I wrote my first academic book review; which was very difficult for me to do. I improved my critical thinking skills, and worked on my writing skills as well. I found everything in project 1 to be very helpful, and enjoyable at the same time.
I learned how to write an academic book review. This for me was one of the more complicated portions of this project. I’ve never been introduced to one until this class, so it was a new concept

There was a lot of critical thinking involved while reading. While I am not 100% certain what applying scientific frameworks means. I think it is something like scientific method, but in writing. Where you have a theory and you analyze and prove or disprove it. Just like it seemed throughout The Doctors’ Plague that the author was very knowledgeable about the topic. The way he ordered the events and the information all flowed in a chronological order and made even complicated things simple enough where even with no medical background someone would be able to follow along. So, when Semmelweis in the story was basically going through the thought process (theory) trying to figure out what the cause of the childbed fever you could somewhat follow along with his trail/error process marking out what was and wasn’t the reason these women were becoming ill. I honestly learned and was challenged a lot during this project. I experienced writing my first book review, and my first time writing a reflective essay as well. Our assignments have been easy and interesting to do as well. Our questions for our quizzes made sure that we were actively reading the book too. I think I still would benefit from a little more clarification on some things. A little practice here and there will be helpful. I look forward to seeing what other new writing adventures
In August of last year, an adult in Pueblo County, Colorado succumbed to the bubonic plague. The Health Department did not specify who it was, just saying that it was an adult. This was the first case of someone contracting the plague in Pueblo County since 2004. It is thought that the person caught the disease from fleas on a dead animal. According to the CDC, about seven people every year contract the plague in the United States.
One of the Doctor’s Plague’s themes is ineffective communication. Nuland does well in connecting this theme across the book when he talks about Holmes and Gordon, both early proponents of sanitary methods for delivering babies, but whose ideas never gained mainstream acceptance. Semmelweis, of course, published his evidence for effective prevention of puerperal fever 10 years too late and in an almost unreadable state. Nuland then compares Louis Pasteur and his success gaining the acceptance of the scientific community with Semmelweis’ constant battle to even convince the people he worked with of the Lehre’s validity. The contrast of Pasteur and Semmelweis is stark, something which Nuland uses to effectively drive his communication theme home.
The first task that I needed to do and, that I am still doing, is a literature review. Although it is not my first doing it, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Its planning is a good starting point.
I learned that H.H. Holmes was very, very good at murdering people and using creative ways to get away with it. In the process of researching I learned that our school has given us a lot of different databases to help with our projects and that finding primary sources are not as hard as I thought it would be. Working on this project I learned that by splitting up the steps of the process of writing an essay I can use my time more wisely. When I was writing this I had already had all of the foundation pieces there to help me. This made the physical writing of the essay gp much more quickly than past essays I have written. While looking for sources I found many that were not credible. I found out how to find correct sources that would
Semmelweis, not unlike a detective, was attempting to discover the cause of childbed fever. He was placed in a peculiar situation in which there were two clinics with very similar environments and one had significantly higher mortality rates due to childbed fever. He cited several plausible reasons for this, however most could be discredited due to the almost identical environments that the two clinics provided.
One of the things I found most interesting about the Interpreter of Maladies was the perspective it took on the whole situation. While there was a narrator who was outside the story, the progression of the story followed Mr. Kapasi’s view more than any other character. Even the paragraphs that described him, which increased in numbers as the story progressed, were self-aware and increasingly self-conscious. Mr. Kapasi seemed to be a very reliable narrator and a very observant narrator though he is not the narrator at all. He not only described exactly how the Das family looked and acted but also the logical conclusions that can be drawn, and were drawn by Mr. Kapasi, regarding those actions. For example, after describing for almost two pages the apathy with which the parents viewed their children, he concluded that they seemed more like older siblings than parents.
This source, it discusses about the medical practice and the pandemic plague disease. I feel that the reliability of this source is not very trustworthy, although it says it’s from a museum, but there is no author at the same time. Nevertheless, I feel that it might be reliable, it was totally opposite of what I was looking for. What I was looking for is the beliefs about treatments. Can they take any type of medication. This statement from the passage shows this reader how now today there is so much more that we can do. “Black Death was so deadly, doctors often didn't try to cure the victims; instead they kept a record of how many people were getting the disease.”The author is unknown. I believe that the intended audience of this source
In one of my English classes; Eng. 125 Introduction to Literature. In this class, gave me a better understanding how literature helps cultural knowledge, and further the building of communities globally. My general educational classes allow me to develop and expand my critical thinking skills, allowing me to be more opened minded about contemporary issues.
My project met these expectations. Towards the end, I was a little bit stressed because I wanted my project to be the best it could be. It was also very difficult at times. As I’ve mentioned many times before, writing poetry is an intensive process. Despite the difficulty, I thoroughly enjoyed writing poems for my Quality Project. I also expected the Quality Project to take up a large portion of my time. However, I didn’t spend that much more time working on homework than I usually do. The only time I felt like I was working on homework more than I should have was during spring break. Although I spent quite a few hours working on my Quality Project during spring break, it wasn’t boring or annoying because I actually enjoyed researching about and writing
When we had to practice identifying what the ads trying to send out a message and what were some of the techniques used in the advertisements. Finding textual evidence and going over it in class really helped me understand more frequently and helped me find the main focus in an article. I will be able to learn the biased perspective mode and how the mass communication effects as well as how it uses various techniques to display their perspective of the text. I believe that I should have dig deeper into the text to talk about with the class as well as double checked with my teacher to see if this text would fall under or connect with the ideas we are supposed to be focused on as in the begining I chose to do a poem however, it did not fall in the category that we were suppose to focus on this semester. I would have liked to find a different way to present my FOA as well as practice speaking in front of groups.
In particular the five-page historiographical analysis of the fall of Rome. For me that was the biggest essay I had ever written and took a lot of time. At first this task was extremely daunting. There were many setbacks in the beginning, but as I put in the hours of work it slowly came together. Through that experience, I was really able to improve my writing skills along with gaining a greater understanding of the topic. All in all, I managed to get a -A on the assignment. Another challenge during the year was an assignment to give a ten minute presentation on a controversy surrounding one of the Renaissance figures and then to support one side of the argument. I chose to focus on Niccolò Machiavelli. I found it difficult to get enough information and material to cover ten minutes. With a lot of research I was able to compile a full ten minute presentation. That project helped me learn how to better organize my research and thoughts. Overall these difficult assignments last year allowed me to evolve some essential academic
My passion is world history, I could sit for hours learning about things that have happened in the past life, the cultures, the epic battles; I want to learn all of it because it still amazes me till this day. I wonder all the different techniques that they used to build, craft and other inventions. I wonder of all the geographical studies, and other things. There have been many scientist and only a few a day discover so much, they discover new animals, species, and DNA of everything. One day I am going to be a geologist, and I know I am going to discover so much. It is going to be very hard to become this but with a little hard work I know that I can do

The doctor feels that Mathilda was being indifferent towards her own situation. She was lying to her parents about having a sore throat in order to not face its consequences (32). Lately your heart has been beating so fast you feel like you had just run a marathon. You have gone to the doctor’s since, you have been worried about your pulse and were just informed about your condition. Now, rest easy, it’s not as scary as it might seem. Having a pulse of 150 beats per minute is scary in its own way and tends to make you worry, but rest assured, 150bpm is not necessarily normal, but it’s nothing you are going to die from. I have been through and have experienced this and am looking forward to helping you to be informed and relaxed during your discovery and throughout the procedures of fixing this problem.
