Violent Media: Young Minds being Affected In today's society the media is very influential on children. Children at a young age are learning so many different things, for instance violence. When children are watching very mature content they learn about violence and become very aggressive. Often, many parents have no idea what their children are watching and within a short period of time their children are being raised by the media. Gerard Jones, an author and comic book writer, wrote a short article on violent media being great for children. The article written is called “Violent Media is Good for Kids”. Jones adds, “I'm not going to argue that violent entertainment is harmless. I think it has helped inspire some people to real-life violence” (682). Although Jones speaks this bit of accuracy, later stated is that children without violent media will grow into distrustful human-beings. Jones also goes on to state that by protecting children from violent media one is keeping these kids from real feelings, power, and selfhood. “Violent Media is Good for Kids” is an article that uses many different devices to appeal to the reader. In the start of the article Jones uses an appeal to ethos to make the reader view him as a credible source. Jones wants those reading his article to believe that his opinion on violent media is accurate because he has gone through what many children go through. Think about how often children watch television. Over the past years the amount of time children spend watching television has dramatically gone up. With this increase there is also an increase in the amount of violence that is on the television. Many individuals ask themselves why the violence among children and youth has gone up. The fact that violence is everywhere a child looks could be one of the main answers for this devastating question. Violence has helped children lose the ability to decipher between what is real-life and recreational violence. When they lose this ability they believe that violence is accepted and a perfect way to solve their problems.
