A very popular work of art by Vincent Van Gogh would be The Starry Night. Vincent Van Gogh depicted a night in the town as a symbolic image of emotion with the exploding stars, a night where one can dream, and the comfort of others as homes are brightly lit. Through this painting, Vincent van Gogh expresses personal insight and feelings through it. Van Gogh had a mental illness and it said that between seizures, he would do these paintings because it allowed him to have great clarity. Van Gogh painted The Starry Night by memory and his work symbolize his great illness and a moment of sanity since he was at Saint Remy during the time he painted this portraying what he saw from the window of his bedroom. During the time this painting was made, …show more content…
The different shapes throughout the painting like the stars and the houses as well as the colors expressed in the sky and in the dark hillsides and the texture of the rich and thick strokes in the painting create these Art Principles. Unity is shown in the painting as all the elements belong together and fit with one another to create a harmonious whole. The bright yellow-blue night sky is filled with stars and movement around it which guides the viewer's eyes in the same movement as the lines go not only in the sky but in the hills. The hills are moving upward and then downwards onto the brightly lit buildings repeating harmoniously in the painting. The variety of the orange color is seen in the stars and moon and in some of the houses represented as a light. Patterns are seen in the skylines and stars as they move across. Asymmetrical balance is seen in the work of art because even with the patterns, the right and left sides are not the same because of the different and variety of elements that balance together based on their meaning. The large moon in the painting is where you look at the longest because of its size which draws attention to the stars around it balance it. The small yellow stars balance out the dark and large blue sky because the warm dark blue color is heavier than the cool yellow color. The focal point of the painting would be attention grabber which is the big moon position in the top right corner with its bright colors of orange-yellow and its big size to call attention to it. The stars in the midnight blue sky show the subordination of the painting since there is lesser interest in those areas. Eyes are drawn from left to right in direction to the focal point of the painting like a force that shows the path the viewer's eyes need to follow which is provided by the swirling
The lines outline the water, the clouds, the trees, all show the volume and depth of each element. The use of lines surrounding the ocean and land show the division between each land and water. The use of lines on the rocks show the layers and rigid layout of the land instead of just a flat ledge. The painting also has a lot of shape and definition. The clouds have a fullness so you can see the difference between sky and land. I think Bierstadt also used some aerial perspective in this painting. The sky is blue in spots showing that it is further back in the sky. It’s almost like you are looking down on the fishermen from the sky. The light is very bright and tends to stand out over much of the painting. At first glance your eyes are drawn straight to the light because much of the painting is very dark and gloomy. The light would be focal point of the whole piece. The light allows you to clearly see the mountains and the beach. I think a lot of low key values such as the dark clouds and the water were used in the painting. However, a lot of high key values were used such as the sky and the clouds. This painting is one of my all time
The brightness of colors is intensified in the whole painting seemingly due to the light source. There are bright and dark complementary colors that make the subjects three-dimensional. For example, the blue sky with the orange swirls on the bottom right. They create the most contrast when put next to each other. The tone of colors in this painting go from dark to fully illuminated.
Another main focal point in this canvas was subject matter. This is where the objects or events are described. The artist gives us different objects such as the old couple seems displayed as depressing. Or you can observe it as normal couple, walking across the river, enjoying the night. He also gives us a boat which could possibly be giving us a correlation because the boat looks like it’s broken or about to sink. There is also another interpretation with the object that Van Gogh displays which is, the stars. Depending upon which way you want to take it, they look like flowers or fireworks. Also, there is a sense of false appearance with the houses. If you stare at just the bank you will notice that it is just a bunch of bright lights but if you pay attention to the water close to the bank, you will acknowledge the darkness or shadow of the houses.
The shapes of the figures are sharply defined and the objects such as the table, book, and string instruments. There are diagonal rhythms throughout the painting in which it creates movement. The light source in the upper left allows the source light to have a more natural appearance throughout the painting. The shadows at the right-hand corner and the men wearing green in the middle contrast the main object with the most sources of lighting. The objects shadows and lighting create dimension and a vivid sense of more contrast. There are areas in the making with more contrast and the sharp contrast that creates movement in the painting. The shadows and the lighting throughout the painting show gradations and the highlights create more depth. Staring from the upper-left hand corner with the first figure of a gentleman wearing a hue of blue and yellow, the left side of his face and garment shows the source light in right above him. The source light above the
A lucent crescent of the moon is seen on the top right hand corner of the painting where dramatic contours and fluidity of the brushworks are seen due to the Japonisme influences. Moreover, the eleven stars and the rolling hills are depicted moving to the momentum of the swirling sky.
The painting contains an asymmetric balance for the colors that although they are of different sides they are even. The lack of colors around the painting accentuates the center of the work. This gets an emphasis on the worker, the flowers and the woman. In the flowers is where the colors are highlighted and also it is noticeable that they are slowly clarifying when receiving the light.
Texture and pattern are very easy to identify in this painting. The street’s cobblestones show texture and pattern in the way that they are arranged. Texture is also demonstrated through the paint strokes on the buildings, the tree, and even the sky. These thick, uneven strokes add a layer of depth and texture to all elements of the painting.
There are different understandings of Starry Night and one of it is that this canvas portrays trust. It appears that van Gogh was demonstrating that even with a dull night, for example, this is still conceivable to see a light in the windows of the houses. Moreover, with sparkling stars filling the sky, there is constantly light to guide you. It appears that van Gogh was, at last, being cured of his disease and had basically discovered his paradise. He likewise realized that in death he would find a sense of contentment and further depicts this by utilizing striking hues as a part of the Starry Night painting. In "The potato eaters" He painted the five figures in earth hues – 'something like the shade of a truly dusty potato, unpeeled obviously'. The message of the work of art was more vital to Van Gogh than right life systems or specialized flawlessness. He was exceptionally satisfied with the outcome: yet his work of art drew extensive feedback since its hues were so dull and the figures loaded with slip-ups. Van Gogh's enthusiasm for evening time is obvious in "the Starry Night" painting, where the effective sky sits over the calm town. It appears that van Gogh is standing out life and demise from iridescent stars and a melancholy, serene
One of the most renowned paintings around the world, Starry Night, created by none other than Vincent van Gogh, inspired many artists to produce a form of artwork that somehow relates back to the actual painting itself. No matter what form of art, Starry Night is a major influence on the works of many. The painting, Starry Night, connects to “The Starry Night” by Anne Sexton and the song “Vincent” by Don McLean because of the imagery and tone being used in these pieces of art. In the painting, poem, and song, imagery is being expressed to show the importance of the contrasting colors.

The Starry Night portrait was created by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh during the period of the 20th-century renaissance. This masterpiece was one of Vincent van Gogh well-known painting in the history of art which brought him fame. The Starry Night was so popular because of this painting represents star that makes you dream. During the time he created this masterpiece, Vincent van Gogh live in a hospital while he continues to make this art when he was ill.
Also, Van Gogh’s use of white and yellow creates a spiral effect that draws attention to the blue sky. 2 His choice
One strong aspect of this painting is it has a strong sense of both harmony and unity. The painting achieves harmony by using similar elements throughout the work and unity by making a quality of wholeness or oneness to the painting. Even though there are many different hues in this painting none have an overpowering feeling over the work which brings wholeness to the work. The work has repetition and rhythm of colors such as blue and patterns like the swirling brush strokes which brings many elements throughout the work.
Then there are also many psychological lines to be seen in the work. One such line is of the woman and the floor, where she is staring down towards it. Another is from the young child and the store clerk, showing a defiance between the two. Next, light and value are not very contrasting in this painting, with only the basic highlights and the shadows seen. It isn’t completely contrasting or contradicting since the colors blend well together with close to the same value ranges, dark colors seen throughout except for the people’s pale faces. There also seems to be a variety of light sources since the woman’s face along with the shop clerk and the young boy’s is lit up by what seems to be a light bulb since they’re much brighter and highlighted and then the men and women in the back aren’t really as bright, except for the ones who close to the open door, creating a blue tinge from the outside light. The shapes shown through the painting is shown to be either very round or very geometrical. There are organic shapes in things such as the umbrella or even the back of the chair, but mostly it is either straight lines and geometrical shapes. The volume shown in the painting is very much implied, correctly showing the
Many elements and principles are portrayed in this art piece. To begin with, the first thing I see and grabs my attention is the swirling wind. Rhythm and Movement can be seen and it creates a flow to the rest of the painting in which leads your eyes to follow along the path of the swirl and brings you to the next subject. It allowed me to view the art piece up to down and left to right, as I started from the swirl to the stars
