The painting I have chosen to write about is Puget Sound by Albert Bierstadt. His painting is representational because you can clearly see the details in the painting and you could imagine the painting would be of a real place. His work has been said to be more naturalistic rather than realistic since naturalism comes straight from the artists view and imagination. Bierstadt never actually visited this place. He painted from his own imagination from other places he has been and people he has seen. I think the added details in the ocean and embellishment of the clouds are what make the painting so strong and powerful.
The subject matter of the painting is a portrait that shows the Native American fishermen coming in from a fishing trip. Bierstadt often painted the scenes and cultures

The lines outline the water, the clouds, the trees, all show the volume and depth of each element. The use of lines surrounding the ocean and land show the division between each land and water. The use of lines on the rocks show the layers and rigid layout of the land instead of just a flat ledge. The painting also has a lot of shape and definition. The clouds have a fullness so you can see the difference between sky and land. I think Bierstadt also used some aerial perspective in this painting. The sky is blue in spots showing that it is further back in the sky. It’s almost like you are looking down on the fishermen from the sky. The light is very bright and tends to stand out over much of the painting. At first glance your eyes are drawn straight to the light because much of the painting is very dark and gloomy. The light would be focal point of the whole piece. The light allows you to clearly see the mountains and the beach. I think a lot of low key values such as the dark clouds and the water were used in the painting. However, a lot of high key values were used such as the sky and the clouds. This painting is one of my all time
The work is very smooth and fluid making it appear much like a photograph. The oil is not built up on top of itself keeping it very two dimensional. The colors vary between dark and light throughout the painting. In the top right corner, the sun, outside the painting, shining down, aluminates the castle and also the lone tree at the bottom left corner. Besides the back cliff, the rest of the painting is in shadow and displayed in a much more melancholy tone. The colors that Cole focuses on, to display the sharp contrast between rock and nature, are mostly dark greens and gold. The striking blue of the river stands out dramatically from the rest of the colors and draws the eye after the initial citing. The grey in the cloud is the only place where I can find that shade of gray in the work, and it sets itself apart from the snow white clouds in the background. The color helps draw the eye immediately to the castle on the hill. My eyes then fallow the flow of the river down to the tree, which is illuminated by a beam of sunlight.
Hill painted a perfect looking scenery which made it realistic as if a real scenery picture was taken with an advanced technology. Hill applied a wide range of vivid colors to help enhance this piece more. If I was to visit a senior citizen home and had to depict this painting to a blind fe/male. I would start off by saying firstly, my attention was drawn towards the upper atmosphere’s bright blue color which reflected from the large body of water underneath it. Which is often associated with feelings of breaths slowing down and when one reaches a certain state of relaxation. Secondly, by imagining one mashing a pillow against their palms I was able to feel the fluffiness of what floats in the sky. In order to picture, the way the sizes and shapes change I would compare it to when one
Light uses dark black lines outline to show the mountains, his overalls, his hat, his stick, his bag tied at the end of his stick, the river or stream, and the grass. The lines show the shape of everything in the picture. The value of the picture is between medium and dark, though the orange in the mountains and the pink in the river or stream is bright. The space of the art piece is negative, open, and shallow. The texture of this two-dimensional painting is smooth (well, he did use
Traditional landscape painting of the mid-1800s could hardly look more different from this piece. While this piece features dramatic shadows and intense contrast, its contemporaries had a low-contrast, under-saturated, dull appearance. While other, earlier paintings show what the artist remembers the outside looks like, this painting shows the world how it is with much more realistic lighting. Also, as mentioned above, the focus of the pieces changed. While other pieces focused on a forest or a farm, Syria by the Sea has a deeper message and more complex, varied
It is assumed that the main focus of the painting is the bottom part because the objects are placed there and they draw viewers’ attention first. They are realistic but abstract and evenly distributed on the page. They look like modern sculptures not only with alien shapes but also innovative colors. There are a group of building-like shapes on the most front of the painting. They are connected at the bottom part so they can be described as a group. They have different dimensions and one of them has a very sharp part pointing upwards to the melting land between the ground and the sky. There are several alien objects around the main group, which some of them are really tiny but still are painted precisely. There is a transparent object in between the middle ground and the background on the left hand side of the painting. The whole shape blends into the background because of its transparency. Also it is because there is not enough light shinning to the object to make it easily visible. One of the interesting about the painting is there are two super tiny spots near the transparent object. They are painted clearly and you can see them only on closer
We can also see the use of black shades to create a hole at the bottom part of the rock. With his excellent use of colors, we can identify the good, healthy and green grass from the bad, unhealthy, brown grasses. Looking beyond the main focus of the painting, he uses colors to separate the sky from the land in the background creating a solid form of perspective on the painting. He also uses colors to create water forms as seen behind the young character. Now, for the sky, he uses shades of white to magnificently differentiate the thick clouds from the light ones. He also uses this to create a source to light to the whole area. All these put together creates a splendid, realistic and familiar atmosphere for the viewers to relate with.
In this portrait, he created an everyday life painting which is called still life. The textures in the couples faces are very “meticulously rendered”. The wrinkles in their faces are very detailed and the lighting of the outside from the window hitting the room depicts a real representation of real life experiences. He used horizontal and vertical lines to create “architectural elements in the room.” To add harmony he used the basic colors like red, blue, yellow and gray. I believe this painting is a representational painting because it looks so real and can relate to everyday life. It’s a husband and wife, excited and proud to see that their son survived and finally got a letter to see how he’s been doing. It’s a very true and emotional
The use of light and color by Friedrich contributed to the calm and peaceful mood which is created. The main source of light in this painting comes from below the man and the rocks he is standing on. There is no visible sun in the sky and it is most likely behind the clouds. The light from below the rock illuminates the air around the man, directing your focus to him and his calm stance. The fact that the main light source from the painting is below him could represent the man's past and how he is reflecting on it while he is standing here looking out at the landscape. There is very little darkness in the painting, and this contributes to the peace of the painting because everything has the same level of light. It shows a sense of evenness and calmness in the landscape. This evenness is also displayed through the colors
Representational artwork, while presumably more viewer friendly because the people can understand it more easily, can actually be more abstract than abstract artwork at times. For example, René Magritte’s The Treason of Images would appear to most people to be very representational, since it is an image of a pipe, which is something easily recognizable. However, he adds the words “This is not a pipe”, which can cause confusion for many. This is a good example of how such a representational image can be so abstract. What I think Magritte meant was that the painting was not an actual pipe. It is just paint. The subject of the artwork is the paint, not the pipe; it is not about a certain subject matter. Therefore, it is common for all artwork,
The monochromatic tones, and vivid, thick lines provide a lot of contrast. It uses washed tints for more texture on the rock surfaces and shadowed areas, and leaves the paper clean where snow and space are depicted. The planar view divides the foreground, while the jolt in the cliffs split the entire upper half of the painting. This provides a stability and balance to the work.
As the name implies, this landscape artwork represents a full moon surrounded by a cloudy sky which reflects light on water. The clouds look very dull because the artist has used blacks and greys to paint them and they are also carved out in irregular shapes suggesting a storm. There is a presence of humans at the far end of the sea waiting for a series of ships at a harbour although, this is seen only when painting is enlarged. Furthermore, the sea, moon and the ships at the far end all combine to create depth in the painting. The moon When you first look at this two-dimensional piece of art, the first object you would notice is the moon. This has been done intentionally by the artist. The artwork looks dull and depressing. Ewen has used lines to create waves on the sea and bring
Then there are also many psychological lines to be seen in the work. One such line is of the woman and the floor, where she is staring down towards it. Another is from the young child and the store clerk, showing a defiance between the two. Next, light and value are not very contrasting in this painting, with only the basic highlights and the shadows seen. It isn’t completely contrasting or contradicting since the colors blend well together with close to the same value ranges, dark colors seen throughout except for the people’s pale faces. There also seems to be a variety of light sources since the woman’s face along with the shop clerk and the young boy’s is lit up by what seems to be a light bulb since they’re much brighter and highlighted and then the men and women in the back aren’t really as bright, except for the ones who close to the open door, creating a blue tinge from the outside light. The shapes shown through the painting is shown to be either very round or very geometrical. There are organic shapes in things such as the umbrella or even the back of the chair, but mostly it is either straight lines and geometrical shapes. The volume shown in the painting is very much implied, correctly showing the
The painting was done during a difficult period of Monet’s life. He was forced to leave Paris and return to his father’s house in Sainte-Adresse. It is a small village in Normandy at the mouth of the river Seine. During this period, Monet reached after the more rigorous construction of the painting. Every detail is drawn carefully; the composition is calibrated accurately; it does not remind soft and blurred tones of artist’s regular paintings. His brush is not as free as in other works. The figure, terrace, and sea make an impression of a strange stillness. This painting illustrates Monet’s experiments with plenty of shimmering and bright natural colors and a removal from the dark brown and black colors. Flowers are written by a variety of small, short strokes, which show the texture of the plants
To begin with the line, we can see that the artist used one point perspective in order to draw this painting. Therefore, this painting is consisted mostly from lines, we can see the lines in the center of the image that takes our eyes until the end of the road where we can notice the buildings. Moreover, there are a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in drawing the buildings and some of them in drawing the shops and windows of the building.
He uses geometric and organic shapes that such as your basic rectangles, triangles and squares. Geometric are implied into the houses and furniture. The organic shapes you could see in the throughout whole piece. You could see from the trees in the background it not as detail as the one in front. By creating it into a form of tree you could define what it is from a far. You could also see some organic in the clouds. Organic is “having irregular forms and shapes, as though derived from living organisms”. I’m truly amazed that artist could do so much with a two-dimensional painting. He created a his are to become as if you see as the hills. The say “artist can create the impression of three-dimensional works, such as paintings and drawing.” I personally think that was the artist motive. For the time and motion, I could place in early 1960s - 1970s. I’m assuming from the boots that are made wood, and the way people dress it has dated far back. I also could notice that the Americans are holding a document and the guy with red blanket that some type of trade is happening. Giving you an ideal that some kind trade or deal happing at that moment “Remember that even a static artwork, such as a painting, drawing or sculpture can express emotion”. I feel express overall ideal to viewer point of view throughout the painting. His depth was amazing. The atmospheric perspective drew me in as if I was on field trip. The artist directs you
