I chose the career of a Vet Technician. This job is often confused with the veterinarian or veterinary technologist. These two fields are totally different than a vet technician. Veterinarian required eight years of schooling, where the Veterinary technologist requires a bachelor degree in applied science. The job of an veterinary technician is to provide nursing care and assist surgeries for animals. Think of it as a human nurse, and a doctor, the vet tech assist the veterinarian in diagnosing illness and injuries. Some other jobs a veterinary technician might have would be preparing an animal for a surgery like a scrub with germicidal soap, sterilizing the surgical utensils, setting up a room

When people look back at their lives, a lot of them would like to think that they made a difference. One of these ways is by caring for an individual who could not take care of themselves. It would bring this person a sense of happiness and great relief knowing that they have done something to change an outcome, or potentially save a life. "Being a vet tech is a rewarding and life changing expierence" (Holmes 46) . Not only is being a vet tech rewarding and life changing, but it can help the world become a better place by saving one animal at a time. For someone who loves animals and spending time with them, being a vet technicians is the most suitable career choice.

My understanding of a credentialed veterinary technician is they are essentially a “nurse” to a Veterinarian. They are expected to do anything from assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, drawing blood, administering medications, taking x-rays, cleaning teeth, interacting with clients, and so much more. They must be familiar with many different animal species and have the ability to restrain them. A Vet Tech must also deal with “bad days,” when an animal cannot be saved. As upsetting as this can be, ideally the good days outweigh the bad. Wherever there is a Veterinarian, there is a need for a Veterinary Technician. Second, the nature of work on choosing a career is an important factor. A vet technician is very similar to what a nurse would do for a physician. As the work environment, even though for someone that loves animals gets the accomplishment of helping and caring for a pet, some of the work is not fun at all, physically and emotionally demanding and it can be dangerous. When they have stressful and a emotional experience when it comes down to seeing animal abuse, euthanized unwanted pets, aged, or injured pets that can’t improve. On top of that there are some vet technicians that have to work an overtime shift that can go up to 24 hours a day. Vet technicians shifts can be from 40 to 50 hours a week. In the other hand, registered nurses have a demanding job. As a registered nurse it’s much cleaner and less dangerous. As for the work environment, it’s much more comfortable and less noisy. In contrast, registered nurses have to sometimes travel to the patients’ home and other hospitals. They also have to work on holidays and weekends. Lastly, registered nurses sometimes are on call to work on the last minute.

There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. The clinic that I am interning at they are not open 24 hours, they are open from 8-5 Monday through Friday.

Many people choose this because they think that they will get to be around animals and spend time with them. That is true, but most technicians start out by cleaning out the cages of animals and preparing an area for surgery. Some, depending on how experienced and how your vet chooses, vet technicians can help during operations. This would take many years of doing the beginners work of cleaning up after the animals. Choosing to go for less schooling would of course make my salary lower.

For my subject I chose veterinary technician. I chose this job because I love animals. You may ask, why are veterinary technicians that important? Well honestly, they do everything they can to help save the lifes of animals, every day. Like I said before veterinary technicians are nurses for animals. Vet techs are very important to your animal family members healthcare. They aren't worried about themselves, but about the patient they are dealing with. Not only do vet techs figure of what is wrong with your pets, but they help with the community around them too. Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.

As a registered veterinary technologist, I would expect my daily routine to be complied of various, and sometimes strenuous, tasks and responsibilities, such as evaluating an animals condition, checking vital statistics, cleaning and wrapping wounds, restraining animals, preparing and stocking surgery rooms with necessary supplies, and some dental care. The outlook of this job is predicted to grow substantially over the next years. “Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. The reason for veterinarians being in such a need in the future is because like there will always be people, those people will always have pets. Those pets will also always need someone to take care of them, just like all people will always need doctors. Veterinarians, in general, will always be needed but, different areas of the veterinary field will be needed differently in the future. For example, food and animal veterinarians (a type of Large Animal Veterinarian) will be especially in need in the future because as the population of the planet is always increasing, those people will always need food which requires a veterinarian to administer healthcare to those food-producing animals. Also, because colleges not only train vets in the study of treating animals they also train vets in fields such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies therefore if they do not have any interest in the more common fields they will almost certainly be able to find a decent job in another. I do not have any experience in health care or veterinary medicine. A hobby that I feel like helped me gain skills that could easily transfer over to helping animals would have to be helping out at my local elementary school with the young children. Children and animals are alike in that they make noise when they want something, love attention, and enjoy being praised when they have done something good. They are different in the fact that children can verbalize with words what they want while animals can only make sounds to try and show you what they want. I have personally first hand seen how much joy and happiness animals can bring to society as the local elementary school has had dogs come in and listen to the students read to them causing the students to not feel any pressure or worry.
