Credentialed Veterinary Technician Essay

When people look back at their lives, a lot of them would like to think that they made a difference. One of these ways is by caring for an individual who could not take care of themselves. It would bring this person a sense of happiness and great relief knowing that they have done something to change an outcome, or potentially save a life. "Being a vet tech is a rewarding and life changing expierence" (Holmes 46) . Not only is being a vet tech rewarding and life changing, but it can help the world become a better place by saving one animal at a time. For someone who loves animals and spending time with them, being a vet technicians is the most suitable career choice.

Second, the nature of work on choosing a career is an important factor. A vet technician is very similar to what a nurse would do for a physician. As the work environment, even though for someone that loves animals gets the accomplishment of helping and caring for a pet, some of the work is not fun at all, physically and emotionally demanding and it can be dangerous. When they have stressful and a emotional experience when it comes down to seeing animal abuse, euthanized unwanted pets, aged, or injured pets that can’t improve. On top of that there are some vet technicians that have to work an overtime shift that can go up to 24 hours a day. Vet technicians shifts can be from 40 to 50 hours a week. In the other hand, registered nurses have a demanding job. As a registered nurse it’s much cleaner and less dangerous. As for the work environment, it’s much more comfortable and less noisy. In contrast, registered nurses have to sometimes travel to the patients’ home and other hospitals. They also have to work on holidays and weekends. Lastly, registered nurses sometimes are on call to work on the last minute.

There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. The clinic that I am interning at they are not open 24 hours, they are open from 8-5 Monday through Friday.

Many of my friends and family have argued with the idea that I should pursue a more practical career, doctor, lawyer, teacher, to name a few examples. However, I was never attracted to that, I knew that, regarding their background, that they essentially did not really understand what it is to pursue those kinds of careers.

Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.

I felt that animals can’t help themselves and I could help. The career of a veterinary technician is a gross and rewarding, because of all the different experiences that one will receive on an everyday basis. I was raised here in Richmond, Virginia, but was born in Buckingham County. I was raised by a big family that loves and supports me in anything I put my mind to. I graduated from Hermitage High School and completed two years at the Hermitage Technical Center and received a certificate to be certified as a veterinary assistant my senior year. My passion for working with animals and my experiences with the veterinary program, I decided to attend Virginia Union University. They have an awesome science program, which is why I chose to major in biology, and the staff and faculty builds a bond with their students that make them feel like family.

My mother purchased a saddle for me before I was born. She knew I would be a cowgirl who loved horses, like herself. But what she did not know is that my love of horses would develop into something much greater. My past, present, and future endeavors have all been in pursuance of my goal: to be an equine veterinarian.

I have an interest of being at a school where I want to be a vet tech. I would like to learn more about animals than I am now at the career center being in a animal care class. That would make my application complete trying to get into a school with vet tech classes. I would like to learn how to take care of sick animals and how the vet tech does x rays and all kinds of experience that I would like to see because i’m not getting that kind of experience at the medina county career center. Or to be a vet tech assistant because I love working with animals and it’s a type of career field I would really enjoy. Veterinarians provide medical services for animals that are big and small. Helping sick animals weather they are big or small. They provide medicine for house pets and farm animals. When owners take there pet to the vet they are looking for someone to provide information to them about their animal. Some of the information given to the own is about how to properly care for your animal to make sure it grows the right why. Veterinarians are there to help animals no matter the size.

I chose the careers veterinary medicine, computer forensics investigator, and information security analysist. I chose them because I find each of these fields interesting in their individual aspects. I chose veterinary medicine because it is my dream job, and I wanted to find out more on it. I chose computer forensics investigator because I find this field interesting and I like studying cases that involve disappearances, murders, or other crimes dealt with by computer forensics investigators.

As a young child, I developed a strong passion for animals and their well-being. Since then, my interests have only grown. I am currently employed at a local veterinary clinic where I work side-by-side with two veterinarians and other staff members. Initially, I was hired in May of 2015 as a Kennel Assistant. In addition to kennel duties, I began to train as a Veterinary Assistant, and now help with surgeries, examinations, and laboratory tasks. Though my work, I am confident that Veterinary Medicine is my career of choice.
