When I think of veterinary medicine I think of an essential part of being a responsible pet owner. Veterinary medicine, much like human medicine, is necessary for the well being of not only us but our companions as well. In the case of zoonotic disease, early detection is key to ensure that the other members of the household don't fall ill. Veterinary professionals have the potential to have a highly rewarding career by improving the lives of pets and the people that love them. Veterinary facilities see dozens of patients a day of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Whether it be for simple routine checkups in a veterinary general practice clinic or saving a severely injured non-human member of the family at the emergency clinic, the entire veterinary team is essential to a smooth running facility. Doctors can tell what is wrong with your pet and prescribe treatment and medicine to make them feel better. There are two levels of education for entry into this occupation. A 4-year program for veterinary technologist, and a 2-year program for veterinary technician. Both need to pass a credentialing exam to be licensed, certified, or registered depending on the state. Also it is recommended that in highschool you take biology, math, and science classes. Both veterinary technologists and technician typically work in private clinics and hospitals. Sometimes in laboratories, humane societies and universities. There is a higher rate of illnesses than the national rate, this being because workers could could get bitten, scratched, or kicked. This happens because of dealing with aggressive or scared animals. Many clinics are open 24 hours so with that being said some will have to work holidays or weekends. The clinic that I am interning at they are not open 24 hours, they are open from 8-5 Monday through Friday.

There are many kinds of veterinarians. There are vets that specialize in common house pets like, cats and dogs, vets that take care of exotic creatures like, lizards and snakes, and vets that treat large animals like, horses and cows. For my future career I chose a large animal veterinarian. A large animal veterinarian can treat animals from the zoo to the farm. They mainly work with horses and cattle but they know how to treat other animals. A large animal vet needs to know several types of math and how to use each type in their daily work.

There are research veterinarians who work in laboratories. They lead clinical research on human and animals health problems. Food safety and inspection veterinarians also conduct tests to identify the effects of drug therapies on animals. The outlook of this job is predicted to grow substantially over the next years. “Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. The reason for veterinarians being in such a need in the future is because like there will always be people, those people will always have pets. Those pets will also always need someone to take care of them, just like all people will always need doctors. Veterinarians, in general, will always be needed but, different areas of the veterinary field will be needed differently in the future. For example, food and animal veterinarians (a type of Large Animal Veterinarian) will be especially in need in the future because as the population of the planet is always increasing, those people will always need food which requires a veterinarian to administer healthcare to those food-producing animals. Also, because colleges not only train vets in the study of treating animals they also train vets in fields such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies therefore if they do not have any interest in the more common fields they will almost certainly be able to find a decent job in another. Becoming a veterinarian takes a lot of hard work and many years of schooling, but it is an immensely satisfying job for those that are comfortable with and passionate about working with animals as well as people. Veterinarians offer medical care to by diagnosing and treating sick animals, which are often household pets, farm animals, and zoo animals. While looking into becoming a veterinarian, many factors of the job need to be taken into consideration: education and experience requirements, working facilities, job outlook, advancement opportunities, salary and wages, tasks performed, and advantages and disadvantages.

The career that interests me is an Equine and Small Animal Veterinarian. This career consists of giving vaccinations, doing basic exams, drawing blood, prescribing medications, preforming surgeries, suturing wounds and more. This would be for Horses and Small animals such as cats, dogs and other household pets (rabbits, birds, etc.).

The Veterinary practice began long ago, around 3000 BC. The veterinarians were mostly used for treating livestock, instead of pets. The practice had been mainly focused on horses as well, and in 1761, the first veterinary school was open, and that is when the practice actually started. Animals such as dogs and horses were used during World War 1, and so veterinarians had to be there to help tend to injured animals. In a way, veterinarians are very similar but instead of doing it with human patients, they do it with animals. There is an extensive variety of veterinarians such as large animal, small animal, mixed practice, exotic animal, and lab animal veterinarians. Small animal veterinarians work with companion animals, such as dogs and cats while large animal veterinarians work with livestock, such as cows, goats, pigs and horses. Animals in zoos and sanctuaries get their veterinary care from exotic animal veterinarians. Lab animal veterinarians provide medical care for animals used for scientific studies, like lab rats. While these are completely different specialties, veterinary residents will rotate in working will all different types of animals. Towards the end of their residency, veterinary residents will determine what specialty they would like to go into and work from there.

There are many different careers in the world to choose from. From doctors to engineers to teachers, etc. In the medical field, it is way more than just surgeons and physicians. There are a whole bunch of careers that are not related to that. For our assignment, we were told to pick three careers where only one can be doctor related and the other two somewhere else in the medical field. Of course, with me being who I am, I chose the career of a veterinarian. A veterinarian is the physicians for animals. Their job is to care and help provide health for any sick animals. Most do perform surgeries like spays and neuters. Not only do they treat illness, but also provide any needed information to the pet owners about responsible animal guard ship.

In addition to caring for animals they also help to protect and improve the health of humans through research, but in my case I want to work in a private practice setting caring mainly for pets or companion animals. In the atmosphere of a clinical practice the daily job duties include but not limited to diagnose health problems, dress wounds, perform surgery, help birthing animals, prescribe medication, and vaccinate animals. Also providing instruction regarding matters such as animal breeding, housing, feeding, and behavior. Veterinarians are also the ones who euthanize animals that are too injured or sick to recover. While caring for animals, there is a wide variety of medical equipment in which they have to perform numerous of tasks with. Because Veterinarians job involves providing urgent medical care which involves working long hours. In addition to keeping regular office hours, they are often on call to respond to emergency and urgent situations. The majority of people who work in this occupation put in more than 50 hours per week according to the AVMA. Paul R Greenland and Anna Marie L.
