A Hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that has the ability to operate not only on an internal combustion engine, but also an electrical power source, normally a high voltage battery pack. The vehicle can be what is considered a Full Hybrid, a vehicle that operates solely off of its electrical battery pack, like the new Tesla and totally electric Ford Focus and Nissan Leaf. The world’s population is at a steady growth, and it’s not going to stop. Hybrid electric cars are the wave of the future. At this point, the human race does not really have a choice anymore: we must act now to prevent further warming of our planet. With global warming graduating from theory to fact, and in the wake of some of the most devastating storms our civilized world has ever seen, I strode into a nearby Honda dealership to see what kind of advancements are being made in the Hybrid electric vehicle field. Keeping in mind what a typical college student might be looking for in a car: pleasing aesthetics, affordability and low maintenance cost, I present you my findings on the Honda Civic LX, compared with the Honda Civic Hybrid model.
Despite the costs savings for electric cars, the environmental impact of electric cars are still being debated. In the first comparison of the two vehicles we shall look at their environmental impacts. while the electric car doesn 't produce any emissions through the tailpipe lets look at how it compare in the way of how electricity is produce in order to fuel the car. In this annually pie chart you see that about fifty percent of the electrics car power comes from coal. In total the emission of carbon dioxide is roughly 8000 lb annual per vehicle compared to conventionals average of 13000 lb of carbon dioxide annual per vehicle. So from the data (See table 1 and Chart 1 ) collective electric cars produce about three fifths of the carbon pollution of a diesel car does annual. If fifty percent of drives where to switch to electric vehicles the would be a significantly large drop in carbon dioxide put into the air and thus reduce the effects of greenhouse gases dramatically over a small interval of time.
Some people have also adopted the hybrid car trend, although many people think hybrid cars help the environment as well. Hybrid cars still uses some form of a gasoline when it is being used, thus creating carbon dioxide emissions. Whereas, the electric vehicle produces no emissions.
The increased fuel efficiency of the hybrids actually makes city driving more economical than highway driving. Overall fuel efficiency (MPG) can be doubled. All of these factors lead to reduced emissions.
