This English class was the best English class I have ever had. There were no tests, vocabulary quizzes, or in class essays, which made the class less stressful. Before this English class, I was afraid that I would not enjoy writing many essays or writing so many words in one paper. Afterwards, essays have become something that is not so much my favorite task in the world, but it has become more enjoyable to an extent. Professor Sullivan’s class has taught me to formally write a research paper, to analyze a book through responding to different quotes from the story or novel, to understand magical realism, and to understand my own passion for school and how much effort I will be willing to put out in years to come.
On February 22, 2016 author John Warner published an article on Just Visiting entitled “Kill the 5-Paragraph Essay.” Warner creatively talks about how rudimentary of a structure this type of essay holds. Writers are locked inside a cage of regulations and guidelines making them unable to write the essay as they please, but rather having to piece together regulated sentences and paragraphs because that’s what they have been told would score high on certain test questions. The article targets people of all kinds, but is more directed towards early college aged students. The purpose behind this article is to get them to expand their horizon, disregard all the regulations they have been previously taught and start to write in a much more open-minded sense.
It’s hard to imagine that just ten short months ago I was sitting in a classroom building a spaghetti tower with no idea what a rhetorical analysis essay was or what the word anaphora meant. Now, just a couple of months later, I have read and analyzed six different novels, learned to write an argument, synthesis, and rhetorical analysis essay, expanded my lexicon of literary terms, and sat through a three hour AP exam. This class has not only given me the skills to master the AP exam, but it has also given me knowledge to succeed in future English courses and in life. Through this course, I have experienced unparalleled growth in my reading comprehension and writing abilities.
In summary, the first section of the Bedford Reader assist students in writing, and reading more closely so selections were easier to understand. Also, we learn how to truly analyze an essay. The second section covers writing, and its importance in daily communication. All in all, critical reading should be done in a quiet place for it to be done most effectively.
I have completed the necessary four essays for English 101 offered through the University of Idaho: Exploring Your Learning History through an Artifact, Analysis of a Person’s Social Networking Site, Response to an Argument, and Synthesizing Arguments. Each was a benign exercise: in the first I wrote on my very old invention journal, experimenting with sentiment and with descriptive vocabulary. In the second, I analyzed Paul Ryan’s twitter feed and found that politics is unsuited for 140 character tweets. In the third, I wrote on Charles Yu’s argument on the correlation between appreciation of technology and its ease of use, and in the fourth I synthesized arguments made on the minimum wage and formed my own.
Fossil fuels and other power generates are slowly changing the world. Alternative power sources are slowly becoming more popular in everyday life while the technology progresses. In the essay “Shacks” by Edward P. Jones, it includes questions at the end of the section where students can use critical thinking so that it can help them get a better understanding of the writer’s strategies and the essay’s elements. Before each essay begins, the book includes an introduction about who the writer is and about what their essay is going to be about to help students have a better understanding on what they’re going to be reading.
It begins with the essay, your AP Lang teacher scolds your class after mass complaints about constant in-class timed essays, and this will help you get into college. You’ve done your best work under these time constraints so you decide to test the theory beyond rhetorical analysis and synthesis. Yes, a timed handwritten rough draft will be The Big One, the piece of writing that will possibly be copy pasted into the application for the colleges that you are applying to, a fatal plea to pretend the life you’ve lived is a thrilling narrative.
This article examines the similarities and differences between transformational and servant leadership. The authors suggest the primary difference is the focus of the leader. The transformational leader’s focus is more on the organization and the servant leader’s focus is more on the follower. The authors state that both offer the conceptual framework for
This school year has gone by really quick but I do feel that I grew and was successful in areas such as incorporating ethos and pathos into the introduction and conclusions of my essays. Writing is more widely appreciated when you can connect to it or with it and building ethos and pathos into it, which creates a relatable tone. Specifically in my Identity free response essay, I had improved my introduction with the use of the rhetorical appeals. I revised the anecdote to put the reader in the moment. This built up my essay and made it stronger, which is what the rhetorical appeals are made to do. Additionally, I have never really been a strong writer , but throughout my essays, I have greatly sharpened my analysis skills. I have learned to continuously ask "so what " on many different levels. On my rubric for the Lord of the Flies free response essay, support and development are one of my strengths. This reviews the addition of evidence that is drawn from any sources. I challenge myself to question further into why anyone should read my essays. Asking “what is the purpose?”
According to the College Board, “The aim of [the AP Language and Composition course] is to help students develop the ability to read critically and evaluate sources so that they can write from and in response to those sources. Students should learn to interrogate a text, not only to discern what it is saying but also to understand how and why it proposes what it does.” Students are strongly encouraged to take notes on their reading while they are reading (active reading), and read the text more than once. It is highly suggested that students purchase the novel to allow direct annotation in the book (for tips on annotating, click HERE and HERE). Students who are unable to gain access to the book via the library, online, through other means, must contact Mrs. Wright, Mr. Ziebarth, or Ms. LaFramboise no later than May 22, 2015.
Students who are enrolled in Dual Credit English 1301 are expected to write suitable essays. Unfortunately, students struggle to understand what a good essay consists of. After doing research and analyzing This I Believe narratives, the one that stood out to me the most was the personal narrative, “Always Go to the Funeral” by Deirdre Sullivan. Sullivan’s use of rhetorical devices such as, anecdote, diction, and pathos, make the article an effective essay that students can analyze and use as an example to follow.
This essay originally titled Studying Literature in Grade 12, has an abundance of information regarding and convincing the readers that the grade twelve English course should be composed of Canadian literature. The grammar in this essay however, was weak. The subject did not agree to their pronouns, making many sentences awkward. Overall, improvements could have been made. Some of these include MLA format, the title, introduction paragraph, grammar, punctuation and the citation format.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly.
