My first assignment in the United States Air Force (USAF) was being assigned to Okinawa, Japan I took the initiative to take Japanese classes with the University of Maryland and live off base with the local nationals. I found that taking Japanese classes helped me to assimilate with my co-workers who in turn coached me in speaking the language. This actually facilitated our work together because the majority of my coworkers were Japanese when they had a problem with English they would seek me and if I had an issue understanding someone on the phone or in person they would immediately come to assist me.
