Students need to attend school regularly. They can learn new skills that can be applied in the future. Schools are effective as they teach students how to socialise and become great leaders. However, schools cannot be effective unless students are focussed during lessons and are in good health. In my opinion, there are issues that I feel secondary schools can address to ensure the health, well-being and safety of their students.
Firstly, secondary schools can help students who are suffering from obesity. Obesity occurs when one has an excessive amount of fat stored beneath the skin. Obesity is caused by certain risk factors, which include the lack of physical exercise, and those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. As a result, obesity may lead to medical issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure. To deal with this issue, secondary schools can

The school’s hygiene is very important as schools are the place where students spend a lot of time in. If schools are not clean, it could lead to problems like the spread of virus caused by presence of bacteria and germs. Bacteria and germs release toxins which can damage human cells. When students are infected with bacteria and germs, they may fall ill. This will affect the students academic performances. To tackle this problem, schools can start a recycling programme. Educating students about the importance of recycling and the environment provides a path to a greener future. Since paper is the main form of waste in schools, schools can encourage students to set up a paper collection for each classroom by making boxes catered for unused papers. The students and teachers can make good use of the recycled papers to be reused for rough work, for instance. Therefore, I believe that secondary schools can highlight the importance to the students of recycling and reusing materials, so that they do not harm the
In "One Student’s Advocacy For Change: Childhood Obesity" by Theresa Cast, the author wrote this article in order to bring realization to this disease and figure out solutions to reduce the number of children that have obesity. The issue of obesity is aggravating continuously, however it causes several sync diseases such as diabetes and high pressure of blood, according to cast, “ According to the El Paso Diabetes Association (2010) estimates show that more than 85,000 people in the El Paso area have diabetes and of those, as many as 25% may not even know they have this potentially deadly disease”. The statistics show that the number of children who have obesity in the United State of America is increasing, and that is considered
Secondly, equally important is the schools, schools also plays a big role in childhood obesity. The government should banned snacks and drinks with high calories and mandate that school only provide healthier meals. Poor eating habits developed at an early age lead to a lifetime of real health consequences. School is where children spend most of their time, and it is where they develop most of their healthy habits. There are severals options that schools can promote positive steps towards improving childhood obesity. First, schools should provide healthier snacks that provides nutrition. The majority of snacks should be fruits and vegetables, beverages should be low-fat milk, water and 100% fruit juices. Second, limit size portion, children shouldn’t eat more
Prevention of health related disease attributed by obesity should begin with educating children to choose healthy lifestyles and not to spend all their money on sugary snacks and drinks. Schools are aware of the increasing rate of childhood obesity and know that education is one of the best tools that can be use at an early age to help reverse the rate of
Childhood obesity is a major public health epidemic which has significantly risen over the past three decades and there is no chance in sight of slowing it down unless real action is taken. This major health crisis continues to reduce individuals’ quality of life and has caused severe health problem like heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States and around the world. In most cases, obese children grow up to be an obese adult. The prevalence of childhood obesity can be addressed through education initiatives such as school prevention programs because children spent a majority of their time outside of the home at school, therefore school provides a great opportunity to educate and improve a child’s health at an ideal point before the problem gets worst. My paper will focus on childhood obesity prevention in Hill Top Middle school Lodi, New Jersey.
The health of students should be considered one of the most important issues in education. However, as of 2012, the Center for Disease Control calculated that over one third of children and adolescents were either overweight or obese. Not only does obesity cause physical health problems, but can also affect the academic performance of students. Over the past few years, Americans have been working together to find solutions for this problem.
The percentage of overweight children has been rising every year. There are many strategies and programs in place to address this epidemic. I think one of the best ways to address rise of childhood obesity is through the schools. “Schools are ideal settings for implementing multi-component programs to prevent and control childhood obesity” (Peterson & Fox, 2007). Most children’s in the US attend schools and spend 6 hours or more per day there. Many schools nationwide participate in the National School Lunch Program and more than three-quarters of these schools also participate in the School Breakfast Program (Peterson & Fox, 2007). In addition to providing healthy eating, schools also promote physical activity. It can include physical education
Different factors are responsible for obesity in children and adolescents. The cause of obesity was widely agreed, that eating too much and exercising too little. Food is energy, unless you use that energy; however, it will be store as fat. Nevertheless, once someone becomes obese, it is often not as easy as simply eating less and moving more will resolve the situation. From genetic to behavioral, and environmental, the imbalance of calories intake, calories have been use for the purpose of growth, development, metabolism and physical actives. Children usually consume their calories by means of food or beverages. When those foods are not utilize, for energy activities, it leads to obesity. Obesity could be consider, has been
Obesity contributes to the onset of multiple health problems. According to Eagle et al. obese students struggle more with “unfavorable physiological markers of lipid profile, blood pressure, fitness, and blood sugar” (Eagle et al., 2010 P.1188). Childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity are associated with many serious health conditions hypertensions, type-two diabetes, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, asthma, sleep apnea, and certain types of cancer. There are also many psychological problems for children and adolescents suffering from obesity including, depression, lower self-esteem, and behavioral problems (Moreno et al., 2013). Obesity has many serious health affects that need
Schools are a very important factor in determining obesity. Schools that resist a role in their students’ health welfare are setting their students’ up for obesity or at least poor health. In fact, “children consume 30 to 50 percent of their calories in school” (Klobuchar, 2011). Schools can be a positive influence and provide
However, it is possible to manage the problem through school based intervention (i.e., guidance programs and physical activities). School can reduce the rate of obesity significantly by providing healthier school food option to students, increasing the level of physical activity, and improving students’ physical education and nutrition classes. Despite this, some people insist that community based interventions may better at reducing childhood school based interventions are much more effective because parents can easy participate in the program. Regardless, research has proven that school intervention have positive outcomes and empowers children to make healthier lifestyle decision when they are out of school. Physical activities will help actively reduce the weight of children and nutrition will teach them how to maintain a health BMI. It is important to remember that it only takes one positive intervention to start a chain reaction to reduce childhood obesity epidemic. Children are the future, and is in our hands to recognize that due to the intertwine natures of what is causing obesity, there is also a solution for that
Obesity is always one of the biggest concerns in the United States. Being obese will hurt children from many perspectives. I used to give a presentation about school bullying. During my research, I found that overweight children are more likely to be bullied by peers compared to normal weight children. Besides being bullied in schools, overweight children are also tend to have lower academic achievement, and more likely to hate schools. Moreover, obese children’s emotions are more tend to be unstable as well. The level of feeling loneliness and helpless are higher among obese children compared to other children. In addition, obesity can bring physical diseases, such as stroke, heart diseases and high blood pressure, etc.
The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s (“Healthy Schools.”). Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects children and teenagers who contain excess body fat. This condition is very common today, having about 3 million cases per year (“Healthy Schools.”). A sign that a child is suffering from obesity is when their weight is well above the average for a child’s height and age. Today about one in five school children, ages 6-19, are obese (“Healthy Schools.”). I will be addressing the causes, health complications, treatments, controversy, and supporting obese students.
There a lot of reasons why recycling is important in our community and especially at schools, hospitals, and in households. The success of a recycling depends on the active and continuous participation of people with the correct separation and collection of recyclable waste. Recycling is something that everyone can all do. Children that are school age and older can help out too. The goal is to stop tossing out items that can be use again and again. Recycling in schools help to improve the environment and can reduce money spent by the school on waste disposal. Paper is the main form of waste created by schools, making up
Yet today America has become the fattest nation in the world. “Percent of adults age 20 years and over who are obese: 34%” (CDC). Of the 34% of people that is nearly 125 million of the American population that are obese. If there are this many people that affected by obesity, there is silent epidemic among the population. It is the responsibly of the school to provide
Recycling is presently one of the most controversial topics, considering that while most individuals put across their support regarding the act the number of individuals who actually do something in order to recycle is much smaller. Many people are currently unable or unwilling to recycle properly because the process often requires a series of changes in one's life. It is thus essential for the authorities to provide educational programs meant to assist individuals in understanding why recycling is important and in learning how to recycle effectively. People need to accept the fact that the benefits of recycling will reflect on the future and that conditions are currently critical as a result of the fact that the masses are generally unacquainted with the importance of this process.
