During the time of the discovery day dance, Trujillo was desiring to dance with the misses. He came across one lady who seemed to be perfect for him, one who stood out better than the rest. She was a fine woman in his eyes. So, he chose her to dance with. They appeared to have had a casual conversation for awhile it seemed. At one point, the lady seemed to have made a request to Trujillo. She mentioned that she would like to continue to study in college and become a lawyer. This was a strange move because a woman was asking the president for an education and probably expected him to just give her that opportunity for nothing in return. Then, as soon as Trujillo was about to do his business, she struck him in the middle of the dance floor.
Manuel Tavarez Justo had formed a rebel group called “the Fourteenth of June Movement” that were all against Trujillo’s dictatorship. They were determined to allow his government to collapse by any means necessary. Back then, the Mirabal sisters (Maria Teresa, Patria, and Minerva) had attempted to murder Trujillo in the 1960 cattle fair, but their plans have backfired and they got themselves thrown in prison. Later on, Trujillo had some issues with his political fortunes, and so he accused the Mirabal sisters assuming they were the sources of most of his problems. Therefore, he had sent his loyal henchmen to assassinate Las Mariposas while they were traveling to visit their husbands.

Both these stories show the power Trujillo had on his people. Trujillo wanted to make his presence felt everywhere in the Dominican Republic. This is shown when Diaz states

Rafael Trujillo had sent an invitation to the Mirabal family to attend his private party. He had a special request or was it a demand because its mighty El Jefe? Minerva had to sit with trujillo at his table, and dance with him. While minerva and trujillo was dancing, minerva got upset with trujillo, and slapped right across the face, then it started raining and everyone was going inside, but minerva and her dad left the dance e without trujillos permission. It was also against the law to leave before trujillo, or without his permission to leave. While they were in the car, minerva realized she had left her pocket book at the dance and that she had letters from lio who was against trujillo. Minerva had told trujillo that she didn’t talk to lioso now she can in trouble for lying to trujillo. The next day minerva's dad sent trujillo a telegraph apologizing for them leaving early from his party without his permission. Trujillo sent some of his soldiers to get the sisters dad and he was arrested. Shortly after the sisters dad got out of prison he passed away from a stroke. The sisters started a movement with churches and other organizations towards trujillo and women
Oh, the sights and smells of Cuban culture! Or was it sights and sounds? It seems as though every single sense was simultaneously stimulated together during the breath taking performance of Malpaso Dance Company. On Wednesday, September 16, 2015, the Malpaso Dance Company, led by executive director and co-founder Fernando Saez Carvajal performed at the Carpenter Theatre, in Richmond, Virginia. The company performed two pieces: “Under Fire” and “Despedida” choreographed by Trey McIntyre and Osnel Delgado Wambrug respectively.
I did an interpretive dance for my reflections project. To go along with my movement I chose three songs that represented each of the artists, authors, and composers. To represent The Hudson River School I used the song Ordinary Miracle (Charlotte’s Web, 1980). I used this song because the song describes environment as beautiful and perfect just like the painting from The Hudson River School. In the dance I tried to be very graceful and as perfect as possible by not making my movement choppy to represent how there were no harsh lines or obvious imperfections in the paintings from The Hudson River School. The Hudson River School paintings were like this because they saw America as beautiful and perfect and at the time there were no harsh conflicts.
I joined the Pasion Latin Dance Team my freshman year and it was one of the best experiences I have had at Towson. When I attended the first meeting I expected to only see Hispanics, but that was not the case. Pasion consisted of people from different backgrounds and it welcomed each and every one of them. The board was patient when teaching steps because many of them had never been introduced to the dance styles. Not only did Pasion make time for dance, but it also made time to discuss its own culture, but also by discussion the current event issues surrounding the culture of the other individuals in the room. This environment did not just make as a team, but we became the Pasion family. The experience I had with Pasion exemplifies an inclusive
The establishment of Folklorico groups in the U.S. in uncertain, but it is believed that carpas traveling throughout Mexico and Southwestern U.S. would frequently feature performance of Mexican folk dance in the 1920s and 1930s. It was also once taught by the older generations to the younger generations, publicly teaching them about their Mexican background. However, with an increase in social pressures and whitewashing, came the rejection and denial of the young Chicanxs’ Mexican background. Chicanx individuals have always dealt with stereotypes and discrimination. As described by Olga Nájera Ramírez, “Very little attention was paid to the fact that Mexicans were also a part of the U.S. society and thus reinforced the view that Mexican culture
On the evening of August 11th, the remarkable trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, an icon of today’s free improvisation, joined the New York-based quirky trio DarkMatterHalo for a concise performance at the East River Park Amphitheater in Manhattan, followed by the charismatic Nublu Orchestra.
To begin, I think it is important to discuss my background and why it fueled my interest in taking Salsa I. I am originally from The Bahamas but my mother and her side of the family is Cuban. Growing up, we would spend the entire summer and all of Christmas break staying at my grandmother’s departamento en Kilometro Cerro, Havana. Historically, Cerro was flooded with wealthy families from the countryside who loved to spend their summer time there. Recently, as of 2016, it is ranked as “one of Havana’s poorest municipal barrios” (Larsson). Cerro morphed from the economic epicenter of Havana to a place where taxis rarely frequent. Culturally however, my mother’s neighborhood has yet to dwindle in its cultural fervor. I would see my mother, my cousins, the neighbors (who are more like tiós to me) crowding the already small avenida dancing con tremenda calidiad y con tremenda sabrosura to Son, Rumba or whatever the neighbors happened to
