Jim: The most important person in Treasure Island “ I’ll give you a piece of my mind. I’ve always liked you, I have, for a lad of spirit, and the picture of my own self when I was young and handsome.” Now, Long John Silver didn’t say that for nothing. In Treasure Island, Jim was a hard worker, and his work received positive feedback from all. Jim always wanted to do his best (not to forget do what he thought was right), and with that Jim also added another key part, which was also the basis of my essay: Why he was the most important person in the story. Because of his independent and adventurous side, Jim was the most important character in the story. When Billy Bones brought up the novel, Jim was there to carry it on. Although Billy Bones died early and wasn’t there to protect the map/treasure, Jim stayed loyal and carried the map to safety. By doing that he created the spark that the novel needed to have, which was the …show more content…

I mean, Imagine you’re a 12-year-old kid. You have a whole ship in your hands, and you need to think of what to do with it. Now if you’re Jim, he knows exactly what to do. He hides the boat away from the pirates and gives to the hands of the “Good Guys”. You’re probably thinking, “So What? He took over the boat and hid it? Whoop-De-Do”. Well think about what would’ve happened without that: The pirates would’ve been able to get away from the rest, and they would be marooned for what could possibly be for the rest of their lives. And the hiding part? Well that wasn’t TOO important but it had purpose: Without putting it in the hands of the “Good Guys” the pirates could have found an unmanned the boat and it could be the same consequences in a different
Two children one girl and one boy both stranded on an unknown island after their ship to San Francisco set on fire, because of their sudden leave off the ship the two children are stranded with no food, water, and very little clothing. As the two young children grow older on the island the two find out the meaning of love and life as they search for a way off the island and back home to their families who are looking aimlessly for them. The blue lagoon`s setting is one of the most important aspects of the novel because it shows growth within the children who become adventurous young adults, the island also shows independence because the two children grow up without any adults except for paddy who tragically died, and it represents love through
These pirates captured the crew and passengers of other ships. They then enslaved these people and some people died because of this.
Jim is also a relatively flat character. He goes through the novel with very little change in his character. He is always superstitious, but also is very accepting of people. One example of his superstitions is, “And [Jim] said that handling a snake-skin was such awful bad luck that maybe we hadn’t got to the end of it yet.” (Twain, 64.) Jim always adheres to his superstitions, and in a way they govern his life. Even when Tom and Huck are attempting to set Jim free near the end of the book, Jim goes along with all their crazy machinations. This is similar to his superstitions, because he is willing to do silly things, since he believes they are essential to gaining freedom.
He would feel just as bad even if he turned Jim in. To keep jim was the most handy thing to do. 3. Why don't the slave hunters get Jim?
Mark Twain is an amazing writer he has made many books however this one in particular is on a level of its own and the characters are no different Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” Mark Twain has created interesting characters, the highlight being Huck (hence the name), however Jim is yet another main focus in the series, being another main protagonist in the series, he is a runaway slave, but over a short span of time he changes from a distressed person to a best friend, here are 5 different things that show his actions and why he is a nice person and a friend.
Jim helps Huck develop greater character changes throughout the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. In the story Huck learns a lot of lessons on how to grow into a better and more trustworthy friend. Jim helped him throughout the story to show him a different side of life, and how everyone is different and they grow in different surroundings. Jim and Huck both grew in maturity with their life, and wanted the best for one another. Huck finds out a new identity for the world as he grows later on in the story.
The brand of justice pirates toward vessels they captured was something I found fascinating. For example, on page 88, the incident involving the capture of Captain Snelgraves vessel by the pirate Thomas Cocklyn. Initially Snelgrave resisted Cocklyns takeover so as Cocklyns crew overpowers Snelgraves and is taken by the pirates. Certain that Snelgrave will be killed or beaten for resisting, Snelgraves crew comes to their captains defense thus Cocklyn sparring the respected captains life. Because of the degree of respect Snelgraves had, Cocklyn not often seeing a government captain holding such admiration from a crew offered him a new ship and profits from a captured slave ship for his return to England. This story really caught my attention because of the level of hospitality pirates show to a captain who held such respect with his own crew.
The pirate code in the movie states that the nine “Pirate Lords” elected pirate captains. Like in the movie some pirates voted for important affairs on Bart Roberts’s ship, but there weren’t nine lords. In the series, the pirate code also states that each crewmember got the same share of the treasure found, but it is historically accurate that captains actually got more than everyone else and they gave bonuses to boatswains, quartermasters, and other officials. Other than that all crewmembers got the same share of treasure. Also any man that is injured is left behind in the movie, but pirates actually gave injured pirates a compensation ranging from 400 to 800 pieces of eight. Like in the movie, real pirates were also marooned and left with nothing but a gun and some rum. Another accurate fact in the pirate code of the movie is that when a pirate found a ship to attack, that pirate would get the best pistol. This is a rule according to Edward Low’s pirate code. Jack Sparrow said that pirates never betray or steal from others because it was not issue on his ship. He had forbidden it, but in other pirate codes like John Phillip’s, it said that they would be marooned if a pirate betrayed or stole. Some of these movie pirate codes are very similar to real pirate
The first reason Tom should have ran away to be a pirate is because he wasn't alone. Tom had Huck and Joe with him and they could run back home whenever they wanted so
Jim, who becomes Huck's friend as he travels down the Mississippi river, is a man of intelligence and consideration. "An understanding of Jim's character is by no means a simple matter; he is a highly complex and original creation, although he appears at first sight very simple" (Hansen, 388). Jim has one of the few well functioning families in the novel. Although he has been estranged from his wife and children, he misses them dreadfully, and it is only the thought of a lasting separation from them that motivates his unlawful act of running away from Miss Watson. Jim is rational about his situation and must find ways of accomplishing his goals without provoking the fury of those who could turn him in. Regardless of the restrictions and constant fear Jim possesses he consistently acts as a gracious human being and a devoted friend. In fact, Jim could be described as the only existent adult in the novel, and the only one who provides an encouraging, decent example for Huck to follow. The people that surround Huck who are supposed to be teaching him of morals, and not to fall into the down falls of society are the exact people who need to be taught the lessons of life by Jim. Jim conveys an honesty that makes the dissimilarity between him and the characters around him evident.
Apparently, he might appear like an unconcerned leader for his crew members but the long term consequences are thought to benefit the fellow workers. The US navy is well equipped with highly trained SEAL team which has a high likelihood of successful operation in rescuing the US crew and the ship. Though there is a 60 percent chance of one or more crew members harmed during the operation, he as a captain is more vulnerable to the attack by the pirates during the operation. Simply paying ransom to rescue the crew members and the ship will result in encouraging the pirates to engage more in such piracy in future. Moreover, the time usually
so no one can find it but him. Silver is greatly angered by this and captures Jim along with his men. They happily trade Silver the treasure map for their freedom, but when Silver goes to look for the treasure, he finds that someone has taken it. What Silver did not know was that earlier in the day, Ben Gunn had discovered the
Seabiscuit: An American Legend is a nonfiction book written by Laura Hillenbrand, published in 2001. This book is a biography of a Thoroughbred racehorse named Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit was a lazy, bandy-legged horse, that should not have one at all, on the other hand, he won 11 out of 15 races in the year 1937. He was also the year’s leading money winner.
Jim Hawkins, the protagonist, is the primary narrator of the novel. He is the son of the owner of the Admiral Benbow inn. His connection to piracy commences in the beginning of his narrative with the “arrival of a mysterious old sailor named Bill[y] Bones at the Admiral Benbow” (Gale). From then on, Jim meets the other ship
Then that pirate goes to court, where he would either be guilty or innocent. When he is found guilty, which would be the case in Treasure Island, he would be hanged. This is a normal punishment. As for the black spot, the pirates would give someone the black spot, give that person a chance to plead, and then quickly kill him. The pirates could give someone a black spot at dawn and attack him in an hour or so.
