Imagine the world’s countries as fun, hilarious personas in a parallel world. Sounds unrealistic? Japanese writer/artist, Hidekaz Himaruya has won the hearts of many anime (Japanese animations) lovers with his acclaimed anime series, Hetalia. It has 5 seasons with over 100 episodes in both English and Japanese. Hetalia portrays the world’s countries as people in an alternate world. Countries such as Italy, Japan, England and even Canada are featured in the anime and have their own distinct personalities. Italy is the protagonist and title character of Hetalia (which translates to Unhelpful Italy). He is portrayed as a clumsy, adorable fun boy who has a passion for cooking. Likewise, Italy has two best friends known as Japan and Germany. Japan is an introverted, conservative and quiet boy while Germany is a serious hard worker. Together, they are known as the real life alliance of the Axis Powers. What makes Hetalia different from other anime shows are its talented voice actors, huge fan base and its educational aspects.
Unlike many other anime shows, the voice actors of Hetalia bring a fresh, new perspective to the world of voice acting with their outgoing personalities and creativity. What makes them such talented voice actors are their former experiences with voice acting. In fact, many of them previously voiced main characters in other popular animes! It despises me whenever when I watch an anime and the voice actors are inexperienced with a voice as bland as
The social structure of Japan was composed with 7 parts, which includes the shogun, samurai, farmers, artisans, merchants, outcasts and non-humans. Next to the shogun, the samurai is looked at with the most prestigious position in their society. As a samurai, they are taught to act and behave in a certain way. This is called the code of Bushido, which states that “the true warrior must hold loyalty, courage, veracity, compassion, and honor as important, above all else. An appreciation and respect of life was also imperative, as it added balance to the warrior character of the Samurai.”

Culture is found everywhere. It is found in art, music, tradition, religion, language and law. Culture is hard to ignore, for it is the environment of a person’s upbringing, making us who we are as humans today. These three books, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Learning to Bow, Inside the Heart of Japan by Bruce Feiler, discuss different cultures and the effects that cohabitation have on them. When two unfamiliar cultures cohabit both cultural groups are effected. Belief systems are challenge, perceptions continue to be predetermined and one when cultures work mutually to understand each other are there positive outcomes.
In the case of Spirited Away, it utilizes traditional Japanese legends, coming from the religion of Shintoism. To briefly go over the religion of Shintoism it is indigenous to Japan, Shinto practitioners worship many gods or kami at shrines; and a shrines being the places of worship and different shrines for different kami. Shinto is the way of the gods, kami, or spirits, which is the basis of Shintoism. In Spirited Away, local kami or different gods come to the bathhouse to be cleansed of impurities, For example, the river spirit was heavily polluted and unrecognizable when it came to the bathhouse and with the help of Chihiro was cleansed and his true form was revealed. Again no face another spirit whose attitude needed cleansing. Even the
Samurai signore nobles are mostly conquering, feudal lords used to each other, their behavior has brought huge disaster to the common people. Samurai allegiance to the Lord King often means an unceasingly, and the object of war is the vast majority of ordinary people. Though at the same time, the warrior is a above ordinary people class, but most of the samurai's lower life and ordinary people to the need of the survival causes warrior must be employed in signore or engage in conflict with samurai spirit, the samurai's behavior and the initial idea inevitably. The film demonstrated the four kinds of Samurai:
Anime was created by Japan, in the year 1917, which introduced a new, entertaining and exciting commodity for the Japanese community to experience and witness. Japan had finally experienced its very own cartoons, which would indulge the Japanese culture that every Japanese citizen is proud of and admires. However, the early years of Anime wasn't its most successful, in fact it was by far its worst. Anime could not keep up with the Western cartoons, to the extent that even the Japanese would prefer Western cartoons over Anime. This proposed a tremendous problem for Anime industries, and action needed to be taken for Anime to be on the map. The industry was facing competition from legendary shows such as Batman, Superman, and Disney's very own Mickey Mouse. The hype and passion around those Western shows was so extreme to the extent that no one can compete. But, if you can't beat them, join them. Anime started incorporating those Western features into their very own animations, the characteristics, the plot, the landscape, and the animation, basically everything that helped, was taken and mixed within the old and unwanted Japanese Animations. This caused the massive explosion of Anime popularity in the late 1960's, as Anime no longer only represented a culture that the Japanese already know, and the West aren't interested in, but has now introduced a new era of ingenuity and brilliance. So what caused Anime to change over the years, and suddenly blossom in the 1960's? How
Cultural structures are often very complex and unique guidelines that vary across the globe. These cultural aspects provide a prominent background into the lives of each society respectfully, as seen often throughout the historic piece of literature, The Tale of Genji. Three crucial aspects depicted in the novel’s progression are the role of women, Buddhism, and the political configuration, each containing positive and negative attributes prevalent in the tale. China was a powerful nation at the time, and during this age, these three societal concepts were important, yet controversial at times. These concepts can all be related directly back to the central character, Genji, along with the other vital people who, not
Public art encapsulates a large part of Chicago’s history, and engages many different people in varying ways. Recently, I was in the city observing art and came across a woman who was seeing the same pieces I was. She proceeded to tell me she had just gotten off a plane, that morning, from New York, keep in mind it was around noon when I saw her, and wanted to show her daughter the great pieces of public art in Chicago. She passionately relayed the rich historical context of a few works of art: her main point being that Chicago is a hub for a booming culture of art. She noted that great artists from Europe, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Dubuffet, wanted to be a part of the modern art trends happening in Chicago in the twentieth century. She went as far to say that “these [pieces of artwork] are unique in the world,” meaning they are so well known and respected that their popularity extends beyond the city of Chicago. It is curious to think about what makes a successful work of public art, and why artists and observers alike are so intrigued with the art in Chicago. In my opinion, two works of Chicago’s public art, Monument with Standing Beast and Cloud Gate, serve as effective works of public art due to their complexity and appropriate placement in space, however Cloud Gate is more effective because of its personal appeal to the audience.
While the birthrate increases approximately one percent every year, the death rate increases too. Some of these deaths are caused by poverty, job instability, food shortages and waste, poor infrastructure, unstable markets, climate change, war and conflict, nutritional quality, and discrimination. However, the United Nation says that around twenty-one thousand people die every day due to hunger or hunger related causes, the food just does not get to all the people around the world. Starvation is an old problem that has been around ever since the sixth century and possibly earlier. Right now, there are currently eight hundred seventy million people in the world who do not have enough to eat or drink, and this number is growing. Population growth is out of control in many developing areas, such as Africa and India. More and more children are being born each year, but with less and less food to feed them.
People no longer use the term “Japanese American” in today's society. Instead, they are no longer thought as a separate group and are incorrectly categorized as “Asian American”, along with Vietnamese American, Chinese American, etc. Japanese Americans have an extremely unique background in terms of their origins, history, and struggle with racialization. Like many ethnic groups, Japanese Americans have been subjected to many different portrayals throughout American history. Even though cultural separation and suspicion are deemed as immoral, such practices toward them were thought to be necessary by the American Government. For a good amount of time, they suffered from racial hostility and violence. Now, in an age where cultural diversity
Red Data Girl is a Japanese animated series that tells the story of Izumiko Suzuhara, a young girl who has been raised at the Tamakura Shinto shrine. Growing up in near-seclusion, Izumiko is a shy and timid girl. She is a miko, or Shinto shrine maiden, and the Tamakura shrine is based on the real-life Tamaki mountain shrine. Alienating her from the others even further is that whenever she comes into contact with electronic devices such as phones or computers, the equipment malfunctions or is destroyed, making her unable to use these forms of communication. However, this problem is merely a side-effect of her apparent latent spiritual powers which are revealed later in the story.
The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu deals heavily with Japanese religions and its influence on Japanese society. Themes of jealousy, responsibility and guilt are also mixed in with the religious themes. Religions and ideals clash through the course of the novel. Shikibu focused on the two religions of Buddhism and Shinto. Buddhism represents the modern day religion in the novel and Shinto is viewed as the old religion. As the novel progress the readers start to see the fusion of the two religions. Throughout the novel several people such as women and priests live their lives according to the religion they choose to follow. This work of Japanese literature also includes demons
Shinto refers to a Japanese religion that dates from the early 8th century and incorporates the worship of natural spirits and ancestors and a belief in sacred power called kami. Shanti was the state religion of Japan until 1945 but the religion still has many practices that exist up to date.
The Tale of Genji is often called “the first modern novel” for many reasons. One of those many reasons is that it shows complex psychologizing of characters’ emotional states. No known stories were written in this way before The Tale of Genji. The Tale of Genji shows the emotional states of the characters both verbally and through the characters’ actions. One example of this would be here where the emperor expresses his happiness with the Waves of the Blue sea performance, while it is made obvious to the reader that Princess Kokiden was jealous of Genji’s beauty., “The Emperor was with her (Princess Kokiden). 'At to-day's rehearsal' he said, 'The "Waves of the
