There are three stories from Jesus' Galilean ministry that stick out to me. The stories that stick out to me are, The Sermon on the Mount, the story of the Pharisees trying to trick Christ, and the third is the story of when Jesus fed 5,000 people! All these stories show the power of God and the transparent teachings of Christ. In Mark chapter 7, we find the story of Jesus and His Disciples eating, and they are approached by the Pharisees. The Pharisees goal always was to find fault in Jesus. They Pharisees were more concerned about their cleanliness, than of being in the presence of the Messiah. The Pharisees asked Jesus why He and His disciples were not following traditions. They kept try to trip Jesus by saying His disciples were not eating right and that they fail to follow other traditions. In this story Jesus shares with them that God and the kingdom of heaven, cares more about what is on the inside, than what is on the outside. Sadly, todays reality is that many care more about the outward appearance, rather than whats on the inside. Society is quick to judge a man by his appearance than by what is on the inside. Martin Luther King rebuts society when he said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” (King, 1963). Even though it was almost two thousand years later when Martin Luther gave this speech, we have made little progress. In
Pastor David took an interesting approach to preaching this particular passage in which Jesus' feet are washed by the sinful woman who cleans his feet and anoints them with perfume to the ire of Simon the Pharisee. Jesus uses this as an opportunity to use a parable to teach about grace and its availability to everyone. After reading the passage he began to break down the different perspectives of the characters in the story as if analyzing a play. He examined the perspective of the woman, Simon, Jesus and the others at the dinner.
For example, say you have someone who is looking into a church that comes from a poor family and he attends a Sunday morning church service but all he has to wear is a t shirt and pair of jeans. Now, usually a normal attire for Sunday morning would be a suit or a dress, but what if jeans and a t shirt is all this man has to wear? I can think of a few churches I’ve been to that would give him a funny look, talk about him badly, or just flat out ignore him and that is not okay. If we as Christians are called to be Christ-like who are we to judge someone based on their appearance, Jesus didn’t and he doesn’t. He wants right where we’re at, whatever part of our life that we’re in, He doesn’t care, he loves us unconditionally no matter what. That’s how we as Christians should be to
Gwendolyn Brooks' "The Preacher Ruminates: Behind the Sermon" gives an eerie look into a minister's mind. Indeed the poem's premise is made clear from the opening line: "It must be lonely to be God" (1). The poem proceeds to note that while God is a much-revered and respected figure, he has no equal. The preacher's revelation provides the reader a unique perspective into religion. Brooks points out due to God's position of omniscience, it is not possible for a figure like Him to have friends. Throughout Brooks' poem, the preacher implores the reader for answers to his questions, finally concluding that to be God is indeed a lonely life and
12- “Believers who are amazed by Jesus tell others, and they in turn are amazed.” When we tell others about Christ, great things happen through the power of Christ.
His meeting is different than from those of the Scribes and Pharisees who preferred meeting in public places to be seen of men.
The Sermon on the Mount is a sermon given by Jesus Christ found in the book of Matthew in the Holy Bible. The beginning of this sermon includes a list of blessings called the Beatitudes. Jesus uses these to explain God’s favor towards those who are striving for righteousness. For those who had come to believe and follow Jesus as the son of God, every word that he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount was intended as words of encouragement for Jesus’s disciples and were taken as such. For those who were skeptical, the crowd, that Jesus was truly the son of God, Jesus’s words took on a totally different meaning. The Beatitudes, simple words that promote the humility of man, were explicit words of encouragement for Jesus’s disciples. Yet at the same time, to the crowd listening, the Beatitudes were an implicit invitation to become men of God by believing that this man is God in the flesh, God in spirit, God almighty, God omniscient, God omnipresent, and God omnipotent.
After reading “Everyday Bible Study, chapters 6-9” I found that God wrote the Bible. The Bible is made up of 66 books and was written over a large time span and has many different Authors like Peter, Matthew, and Timothy to name a few, and all were from various parts of the world. Given that technology was nowhere near what it is today, communicating with each other or to conspire was not possible during their time; they all corroborate the same thing, that God wrote the Bible through Man. Man was inspired to create the Scriptures from God through the influence of the Holy Spirit; Scripture was not created by any human being, rather it was translated by God through the Holy Spirit to Man (2 Pet. 1:20-21 New International Version). “If Men Are Involved, How Are There No Errors?”
The book of Hebrews was written by a Christian scholar and not by one of the Gospels. I knew that many authors made up the New Testament but I did not know scholars wrote some books a well. Hebrews writer was someone who linked the Hebrew Bible along with Greek philosophy. The writer never identifies himself but his views on the end times were very strong. He assumes that there is an existence of two parallel worlds: the eternal and the perfect realm of spirits. This is something that I have never heard before. This writer is the only person to speak of Jesus as the mediator between God and humanity. He has so much insight on what was happening or what was to happen but we do not know who this person was. Hebrew is written very differently and some of the
The ideas of Jesus in the “Sermon on the Mount” happen to align with many beliefs deeply rooted into different attitudes adopted by several philosophers. However, the ideas embedded into “The Sermon on the Mount” appear to best correlate with the ideas of Epictetus- the creator of stoicism. The stoics believed that in order for a person to truly find happiness, they must accept life as it happens and not let their “being” become disturbed by upsetting events, as they are uncontrollable and are impossible to avoid. Certain ideas from “The Sermon on The Mount” seem to suggest that a person should find comfort in the things they receive and not find reason to become upset, or build-up a sense of panic when their needs are not immediately met.
The sermon at the mount is a collection of teachings and sayings that Jesus preaches to people at Galilee. It takes place after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. This is the longest teaching by Jesus in a single preaching. It is found in the New Testament in the book of Matthew. It transverses chapter five to seven of the Gospel of Matthew. The main theme of sermon of the mountain is how people should relate with other people and God. The sermon is preached at a mountain when Jesus saw the crowd and his disciples’ were following him, he sat at a level ground on the mountain and started to preach. The Preaching’s can be divided it four major parts; The Beatitudes, Lord’s Prayer and parables.
Whilst the bible does not specifically mention euthanasia, it does address closely related topics. Euthanasia is essentially killing out of mercy, hence the name ‘mercy killing’. The bible tells us that we are not to murder (Exodus 20:13) and any form of taking a life is seen as killing. It says that we die when God chooses us to, and to murder is an attempt to deny God his right of appointing death. Therefore, ‘mercy killing’ is going against God’s will and is a sin. The sixth commandment is “You shall not murder”, and that justifies what is previously said. However, in the beatitudes, it says “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”. If we show mercy by killing,
Their once a time where a man was spreading the religion of christianity,in the time period of 100 AD.Two men named Michael and Ron, both live in the Roman Empire Michael is a wealthy senator of Rome and a roman soldier that achieved many great military accomplishments.Ron was slave that worked for Caesar's estate, his village was raided and he was captured. Both Michael and Ron will hear the message the “Sermon on the Mount”who will think the message was meant for them. The Sermon on the Mount was said by Jesus the son of God.The message of the Sermon the Mount is important because it is the teachings of Jesus christ and the beatitudes the Christianity way of rules. How would Michael and Ron feel about the Sermon
‘It is meant to make people think – even think furiously – and to issue in decision and action’ (Hunter 1976, 13) ‘And sometimes such vivid analogies so catch the public mind that they pass into public parlance’ (Etchells 1998, 1) It is no wonder that the reason people still like to use stories to illustrate teaching today is because of these facts. Etchells in particular brings out a very interesting point in that Jesus would surely have wanted his teaching to reach more than just the people directly listening. Stories are easy for people to both remember and remember accurately, making it more likely for his teaching to spread even before it became codified. We can learn greatly from this. If we really want our listeners to engage with the Gospel we need to preach it to them in a way that will help them engage. Telling those parables that force them to think for themselves and remember what they have been taught will help to carry the message of the teacher back into the listeners’ daily lives, rather than just hearing the message and
One story of Jesus that has always stuck with me and spoken to me is the story of Him washing the Disciples’ feet. I like how Jesus expresses his humanity and humility during this time. It shows the type of person Jesus is. He would wash someone’s feet, this job was usually for a servant, but the Son of God would do this. It is also important to keep in mind that these were not clean or slightly dirty feet. During this time people wore sandals, hygiene was minimal, and streets were dirty. Put those things together and those would be some dirty feet.
Once during a passionate sermon at church, my pastor had made a vivid statement about incorporation of sin in law. Pastor Smith stated, “the world has developed loopholes to maintain its dignity by incorporating sin into the law, and as long as we are operating under the law, our actions are perceived as being justified”(Smith). Reflecting on his theory has brought me to the realization that the United Stated has established a profitable industry, governed by the creation and the manipulation of laws. Although, it’s ideal to believe that the standards of laws were truly orchestrated with the foundation of equality, justice, and freedom. It is imperative to be informed of historical events that has transpired through the history of the black race each operating under the ordinance of law. Beginning with the development of slavery, to the alarming rate of black men behind bars. I am compelled to present the clause of injustice that has labeled the United States as the home of 25% of the world 's prisoners ().
