The Relevance Of Poetry In William Stafford's 5 A. M.

A poem is like a dish , you need to have a bit of everything to make it complete. For me , of course. I had a rough childhood , and till today. You can get a sense of that from my poems.

William Wordsworth’s poem, “Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting The Banks Of The Wye During A Tour. July 13, 1798” (also known as simply, “Tintern Abbey”), was included in the book Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems. This was a joint effort between himself and author Samuel Taylor Coleridge. “Tintern Abbey” remains one of Wadsworth’s most famous poems, and at its printing, the book was completely sold out in two years. The name of the poem reflects the inspiration Wadsworth felt upon visiting the ruins of an old church called Tintern Abbey, with his sister Dorothy.

There are many poems written long ago that still impact us all today. For example, Sonnet 71 by Pablo Neruda expresses wild emotions about love. This poem relates to my life and how I feel because how he explains love is a pain, trying to escape the pain, and how you can not escape it, that is a process I went through. . The author wrote, “One Hundred Love Sonnets” that has the heart-wrenching poem I speak of Sonnet 71, which explains how a person wanted a perfect love but ended up finding out love is now as he made it out to be. He figures out love is actually crazy and confusing.

So the poem I choose was “fifteen” by: Stafford. The poem was about a 15-year-old kid who found a motorcycle that was tipped over. I picked this poem because I remember the time when I used to live in New Jersey and I saw a motorcycle laying on its side let me start from the beginning.

To what extent may an argument be framed as believable or serious? Persuasion on seizing the day is a common theme in Robert Herrick’s poem, “To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time” and Andrew Marvel’s “To His Coy Mistress”. The arguments within the poems can seem unrealistic, a little hyperbolic, with an underlying intent to acquire a woman to sleep with them. The concrete position of all the arguments within the two poems seems to be, getting a woman to sleep with them. The two poets posses similarities between the two pieces of poetry, however argue the topics in different ways. Beauty is not forever lasting, coyness put aside, while pleasure embraced, and time is of the essence; are all points made to intrigue women to be with them. To focus on those points a little: The beauty of a woman is compared to aspects of nature. Herrick’s poem only looks at the physical qualities of a woman, unlike Marvel’s, which references personality along with physical traits. Sexual passion embraced, and coyness set aside? The poets, both urge women to act upon sexual urges while they stay youthful, but if a woman was told they are not going to be desired when older, would they actually want to be with someone who tells them that? Time is moving quickly and its made known within the poems. Herrick is an advocate to relate everything to physical aspects, so of course he says a woman’s beauty diminishes quickly. Marvel does not relate beauty and time together, instead he would

William Stafford incorporates personification into his poem, Fifteen, to support the deeper message, coming of age. Personification is used in Fifteen to show the coming of age within the narrator, who is fifteen years old. During his daydream, the narrator says, "On the bridge we indulged a forward feeling, a tremble. I was fifteen" (line 14). The narrator looks at the motorcycle as a companion and refers to them as "we" to show that it affects him as if it were human. Enhancing the meaning of the poem, coming of age, is how the motorcycle and the speaker support each other on this bridge, a symbol for the time between childhood and adulthood. They are experiencing a forward feeling and a tremble, showing the narrator is ready to mature with

Has poetry of the 21st century changed drastically? Well first off poetry in this age has become more musical than flowing piece of written art we read about today. If you take the time to break down the lyrics of a song and compare it to the poems in the 1500s we would see its more of the presentation that changed.

Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The definition alone does not truly harmonize the rhythmic flow, depth and imagination that goes into this luxurious art form. Throughout history, there have been many poetic genius that has influenced how we perceive this genre, even redefining our very perceptions of emotions and reality to this very day. Poetry is an art form, and as time passes, and new art begins to rise, we tend to look back and appreciate where it all began.
