The poem “Pulled Over in Short Hills, NJ, 8:00 AM ” by Ross Gay has a theme of police brutality causing tension between people, as well as a theme of tension between races because one is in a position of power. This poem contains diction and sentence structure as well as figurative language like similes, to help create meaning to the poem. The similes Ross used are important to the meaning of the poem. The simile, “When rage grows hot as an army of red ants..” is used to contribute to the feeling of anger in the poem.

This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and his observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales whilst using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.

The poem's title seems to depict a harvest scene with foliage falling from the trees, the end of summer, preparation for winter, Autumn Begins. But this seasonal change in nature's life cycle occurs metaphorically in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Wright's hometown, which already gives an introduction in itself to the changes, which occur there. This text response will be looking the comparison of the two poems, ‘Drifters’ by Bruce Dawe, And ‘In the park’ by Gwen Harwood under the name of Walter Lehmann. Drifters is about a seemingly constantly moving family, it describes the process the family will go through leaving their newest home. In the park is about a seemingly single mother raising her children, it describes the mother sitting in the park with her children when a previous lover comes by and talks about the children. With in each poem, the form and structure, language techniques and the tone and message will be analysed and compared with the other to gather a grater understanding of the Australian voice.

In the first stanza of the poem, the girl is portrayed to be happy, as she is playing with flowers near her door. Her to-be husband too is shown to enjoy everyday life, as he is throwing green plums around the neighborhood on his toy horse.

This poem brought me back to my home town and the wonders and beauty that it brings around winter time, and made me nostalgic with memories of past winters with my family and slightly saddened for those who have never seen the magical ability snow has. Claude McKay was a black man born in Jamaica, he choose literature very on in life and kept with it. He moved to the United States at age twenty three to study at Tuskegee Institute and was immediately shocked by the blatant racism prevalent in Charleston, South Carolina. He moved to New York and shortly after became co-editor of The Liberator, a famous abolitionist newspaper, he wrote some of his most revered poems while working there. He was part of the Harlem Renaissance a movement that was a reawakening of artistic and cultural talents of African American people in the United States and helped to reinvigorate their pride in being black.

Examples of imagery that show the carelessness of the people in this poem are, “spring summer autumn winter”(Cummings ln 3) and, “sun moon stars rain”(Cummings ln 8). This imagery was repeated throughout the poem and shows the changelessness of time. No matter how much time changed, things never changed and people were still careless. The poem tells a love story and also a sad story using anyone and noone to symbolize, figuratively, a person and ,literally, everyone. The quote,“One day anyone died i guess (and noone stooped to kiss his face)” (Cummings ln 25,26) shows figuratively the love story of a person named anyone dying and his wife noone stopping to kiss his face. He often wrote in sonnet and fee verse about nature, death, love and human experience. The reader can infer from both Frost’s tone, and the time of day in which the speaker chooses to walk, that the character is in a world of isolation.
