William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 138” depicts the relationship of a couple, who many believe to be the author and his mistress, a woman referred to as the dark lady. The sonnet’s immense use of imagery causes the reader to imagine the sonnet as a play where the characters are covered by masks. Furthermore the sonnet illustrates that through lies, characters are able to hide themselves and become something they are not. By changing oneself, one gives into mediocrity, because if one puts on a mask to be like everyone else, then that individual will never be able to be themselves. “That she might think me some untutor’d youth,…Unlearned in world’s false subtleties” (3-4), The speaker uses this line to demonstrate to the reader that the dark lady treats him as a child, and in the context of this quatrain it seems as though the speaker has decided to create a persona to keep the affections of his young mistress and by doing this he put a mask of a young man, further feeding the lies in the relationship. The speaker continuous to be suspicious of the dark lady, throughout the first quatrain and if one takes a closer look at the previous quote, specifically ,the word, ‘maid or maiden’ which according to the Oxford English Dictionary means “a virgin”, it becomes obvious that it is used on line one to mean virtuous, then on line two, “I do believe her, though I know she lies”, the speaker basically says that he chooses to pretend she is virtuous even though he knows she is not, which further supports his idea that the dark lady is being unfaithful. In addition to this the word ‘lies’ on line two is a pun that can mean to deceive or to lie down, which in this case means to lay down which most likely refers to sex,
