The Lively Art of Writing: Questions
Chapter 1:
1. A fact is something that can be proven either true or false. An opinion is something that can be based off of facts but the opinion itself cannot be proven.
2. Having no facts or having facts that are wrong in an essay can diminish your credibility.
3. No opinion is better than other in the aspect of the opinion itself. However, an opinion can be better if it is supported by credible facts.
4. American foreign policy would be a good essay question because even though you would be able to give your own opinion of it and there are a lot of facts to back it up. Also many would disagree with American foreign policy so it would be variety of fascinating essays.
5. C. because you can have an opinion

The final argument should contain both your opinion and the point of view of the reader. It should also be your strongest point.
Part 3:
1. The essay should have an ending paragraph to wrap up all thoughts and to not leave any loose strings.
2. You can restate your thesis or use phrases from the introduction to put in your concluding paragraph.
3. You may have to rewrite your introduction after you finish the essay because there may have been new ideas made into paragraphs. Once you have a thesis statement you write paragraphs based on the thesis statement so if you write something not in the thesis statement then you have to change the thesis statement.
4. The structure of a concluding paragraph is that opposite of the introduction. You start very specific with the thesis then end with a broad point.
5. This statement alludes to the repetition of words. Repetition helps keep main ideas in the reader’s minds.
6. You could try to leave a series of pictures in their mind by borrowing phrases or keywords from the middle section.
7. The concluding paragraph starts with the specific thesis and starts to branch out broader towards the end with generalizing phrases.
Chapter 5:
1. Style is when the author takes something pain-staking difficultly and makes it

Using personal pronouns make you the subject of the essay. Using the pronoun “I think” makes it sound as if you are apologetic.
5. “Substitute first person” mean removing phrases such as “the author thinks,” and “substitute second person” means removing phrases like “You can’t help.”
6. Using the word “there” adds clutter to the sentence therefore removing the word gives the sentence more life and vigor.
Chapter 6:
1. The introductory paragraph is represented as an upside down triangle. The conclusion paragraph is a triangle and the middle section can be the building blocks of the whole essay.
2. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, to give each one its own setting so that it can be fully and clearly developed without interference from others.
3. Writing “big” paragraphs forces you to use your imagination and ingenuity. It would be easier later on, after much experience, to delete the useless parts.
4. Essays and paragraphs are similar because both have an introduction (topic sentence), middle section (concrete details) and conclusion (transition sentence.)
5. The first sentence, also known as the topic sentence, is used to introduce what the paragraph is about.
6. The middle section of a paragraph explains and illustrates what was said in the topic
How does the structure of a middle paragraph differ from the structure of an introductory paragraph? From that of a concluding paragraph? While the conclusion is seen as having a structure to an upside-down triangle the introduction is formatted as a triangle. The middle paragraph is a block.
1. Paragraph One - Introduction (include a lead/hook, set the context for the essay, give the three main ideas, thesis statement is last sentence)
3. The paper must end with a short paragraph that states a conclusion. The conclusion and thesis must be consistent.
| The introductory paragraph provides a preamble, states the essay topic and provides a statement of how the argument will be organized. Some of the above is not clear though.(7.5-8)
After considering the information in this week’s instructor guidance and readings, I understand ethos, pathos, and logos to be... Ethos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s ethics. If a reader can see the credibility in the writer’s opinion they are likely to believe their argument. Pathos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s emotion. Pathos is often used to evoke an emotional response from the audience.
In this chapter, Lunsford details the planning and drafting process for a writer to organize their ideas with either a formal outline or a rough plan. Lunsford reminds writers to be flexible during the drafting process and not to think twice about changing elements of the essay at this point in the process. Lunsford goes on to explain the qualities academic paragraphs must have these include unity, development and coherence. To obtain unity within a paragraph all sentences should relate to the topic sentence of the paragraph. When developing a paragraph it is important to switch between general and specific ideas in the paragraph, while supporting those ideas with details, evidence and examples as required. Ensuring a paragraph is coherent is crucial when developing an academic paragraph. Because readers need to be able to follow a writers ideas easily, Lunsford gives her readers a method to follow to achieve this goal. This method includes using the general to specific ideas, repetition, parallel structures, and using transition words. The author notes that this method should also be used to link paragraphs
Your introduction should move from general information to very specific information. You should imagine familiarizing the reader with: 1.) the title and author 2.) some information about the text 3.) your topic 4.) your thesis and three examples. Be sure to include:
A full and complete paragraph consists of a MINIMUM of 8-10 sentences and follows a
1) The difference between an opinion and a fact is that an opinion can be used as the main topic of an essay. It is based on partial knowledge of a subject where the writer thinks what seems true. In a fact, however, the statements are based on absolute certainty and can be proven if needed to. Facts cannot be used as an essay topic since no sides exist, meaning no people to persuade.
The Little Seagull Handbook, by Richard Bullock, Michal Brody, and Francine Weinberg, is a book full of advice on the writing process. The book is divided up into sections which help’s students to easily find the topic they are searching for. Section W-4e on opening and closing paragraphs was used to improve my conclusions. I do not have a lot of trouble with conclusions, but I feel that mine do not fit as smoothly into my essays as they should. Therefore I decided that I needed to improve my conclusions. The section lists out several tactics to form a conclusion, such as, summarizing the essay, discussing implication of the essay’s argument, and giving a call to some kind of action. Reading the section has given me several ideas for how to end an essay. Now I can either plan which tactic to use ahead of time or
3. One opinion is not always as good as another. The best ones are usually the ones that bring forth controversy with good judgement (A is better than B).
Bernier (1993) verbalize that each paragraph should begin by detailing the most important known information firstly, prior to expanding to bring in any new information. The paragraph should then finish up by concluding all main points described within. Appendix 1 has chosen paragraphs for the layout and not bullets points.
The five-paragraph theme was created to be a general teaching tool for inexperience writers. It allows the writers to easily formulate a structure essay. It tells you that you only need three supporting details for your thesis and that each do not need to be in depth. Most teachers say that a paragraph is only roughly 4-5 sentences long. As a result, if every paragraph is short then you’re only writing approximately 20-25 sentences. A writer can easily follow the structure given and finish an essay in a well timely-manner. The model is effective for beginners, but ineffective for professionals (Nunnally).
Conclusion (rephrase and restate your own words; summarize all of your ideas; convey a sense of finality)
Third but not least, the conclusion provides an almost mirror image of the introduction, wrapping up the arguments with a restatement of the thesis of your essay. I call this the bottom burger bun or in other words the conclusion. Holding it all together is the bottom bun of the hamburger or the conclusion to sum up all the key points of interest. The conclusion sentence should be interesting by giving it a call to action. As you can see a hamburger is easy to make like writing is not as hard as you think. Writing is very simple to do as preparing a hamburger.
