‘Being a performance designer’
Writing from experience, being a costume and set designer for performances is a really demanding and challenging job. I have to admit that when I was young, as an audience member, I could never have imagined how much work is really needed to be done in order to produce a performance show. Now, being on the other side, I am able to appreciate designer’s works, ambitions and goals; wanting to become really successful on this field.
Looking back on my first years of studying, I was lost and unsure of how to approach a given theme; to work in depth in order to create a piece that will successfully communicate my ideas. Through experience and practice, on my studies in ‘Visual Arts’ (at the ‘IB Moraitis School’

These guidelines are based on my experience, influenced by other designers and mainly taught from my University.
As examples I will use two projects, that I have done throughout my second year of the Bachelor degree, Living Image – Marcel Duchamp ‘Sonata’ and Design for dance – ‘SkingCage’. I chose those two because they have some similarities and some differences that I can use in order to explain my beliefs on how a performance designing team works, the journey that is needed to be taken in order to conclude to a successful piece, what failures they might face and how. I will divide the page into two sections: on the left the ‘Sonata’ project, working mainly on the costumes, and on the right the ‘SkinCage’ project working mainly on the sets.

One of the strongest presentations based on the short story “The Boat” was that of Alex MacLeod, Anngela Lee and Charlotte Taylor. Not only was their project complete with all the necessary components, but also the execution was well considered, detailed and professional. They went above and beyond by using multi-media, handouts and personally connecting with the class to effectively communicate a great deal of information about their three-dimensional artwork and its relevance to the theme of Fate versus Freewill in “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod; however, no-one is perfect, and, undoubtedly, an area of their project that they could have improved upon was the oral presentation of their work.
Through the use of techniques and themes, a composer is able to create distinctively visual images when describing the setting and characters in detail which help us to understand and form meaning of what the composer is trying to convey in their texts. The use of techniques such as body language, symbolism, lighting, music and photographic background slides create distinctively visual images same with themes that are being used within the texts such as truth which is evident in the dramatic text ‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ by John Misto, the song ‘Lose Yourself’ sang by Eminem, and the film ‘The Eye’ directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud featuring Jessica Alba. These three texts demonstrate how the responders are impacted and what is

Distinctively visual is not just about images but also the power of language that enables composers to transport us to their world, specifically to the place indicative of the time during which the text was written. Henry Lawson’s collection of short stories in particular ‘In a dry season’ and ‘The drover’s wife’ and my related text, Art Spigelman’s graphic novel ‘Maus’ bring their unique ideas to life shaping and challenging our perspective and understanding of various human experiences of pain, suffering ,courage, resilience and perseverance ultimately bringing personal and social issues to life.
“Everything always comes together to make a great show,” said Sara Bayles. The cast can’t wait for everyone to come out and see it. They want to show off all the hard work they have put into it. The set crew and costume crew are almost ready and have put a lot of hard work into the show as well. Some of the costumes are hand made and nothing is like the crew found it. They have done work on every single piece of clothing that will be worn.
Students through the process of art appreciation will build connections through the exploration of textures, lines, colour and shape when describing, analysing, interpreting and judging the artworks before them (3 chosen images). They are asked to describe what they see, the artist’s use of colour, lines, shapes and texture. They then move onto analysing; what catches their eye, is the composition balanced and do the paintings look flat or do they have depth. The discussion then progresses onto interpretation where students are able to express what type of emotion they feel when looking at the pictures, perhaps the kind of sounds they might hear if they could step into it, and why they think the artist chose this particular subject to paint and what may have inspired the artist.
The production elements of the show were magnificent. The costumes were great and helped to establish the childlike quality of the show and characters. During the transitions, the characters wore clothing that would best suit a child in play. The
1) Discuss why people can respond differently to the same artwork. People can respond differently to artwork by making the art come alive by letting the art engage your attention, your imagination and your intelligence. With these three items mentioned can look at artwork differently, so if you look at a piece of art with the lack of attention and the next person gives the artwork their full attention that person could possibly view more in depth and see more detail than the person who pays less attention to the piece of art. 2) More than one theme might be applied to a work of art. Pick a work of art from Chapter 3 and describe how two different themes might be applied to it.
More than one theme might be applied to a work of art. Pick a work of art from Chapter 3 and describe how two different themes might be applied to it. The image I chose was Liberty Leading the People by Eugene Delacroix. The two themes that may be applied to this image are Politics/ The Social Order because it shows what the government was like and how the people were fighting for justice and Stories/ Histories because it shows empowerment of the citizens in the 1830 revolution.

This Essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of designing for Site-Specific theatre in relations to pervious practical work regarding the work placement I was offered in July 2015. In this article written by April Vickzo is about the conditions costume designers work in and how they still have to provide and take care of themselves and their health. This article describes how most designers are overworked and underpaid and designers will often ask themselves, “is this worth it?” and “am I coming back tomorrow?”. The industry is cut throat and very competitive and one may never know if their talent that is being used is enough. The article implies that not only does one have to always be artistic and always be on top of things at work but somehow also have to have a social life and take care of themselves. Many may have families that get put on the back burner for their career. Another point the article points out is,

It will highlight the outcomes of audio-visual effects, lighting, costume design, scene changes and the understanding of the
The fashion design career, has recently emerged as one of the most popular and competitive among young people. Those who actually succeed in design have a very individualistic personal style and don’t follow trends set by others. Having fashion design as your profession sometimes allows you to meet glamorous people.
