The Importance Of Art In Education

Have you ever felt as if you can’t express your ideas or imagination, or have you felt limited by the school system to not follow your dreams? This is a crisis that is occurring all over the country in which school corporations cancel art programs. Many of these schools cut art classes and drama class, because they believe that they are not necessary for children’s education. Another reason for the decrease in art programs is that 95% of schools have had their budgets cut in the past couple of years, so most schools have to cancel art, music, and drama programs to just stay alive (Law Street). We need to keep art programs in school, because many students and I have wanted to learn more skills in topics that interest us.

Some people believe art education is crucial in a child's development, attitude, and that it actually improves academics. Therefore, it also gives kids something they can look forward to during the school day. Children actually have the chance to be themselves and have the availability to use their imagination while in art class.

“After a certain high level of technical skill achieved, science and arts tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientist are artist as well” (Albert Einstein). In this advanced modern tech-world mostly people are dependent on science and technology, but arts also play an important role in education. Art creates balanced thinking and better imagination which helps humans to be successful in their career. Yo-Yo Ma intensely informs about important role of arts in modern education society throughout his essay Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and education. Ma illustrates that arts should be also part of education, because it improve students to filter their imagination through disciplined knowledge. Liberal arts should be equal to science and technology because it creates new idea, and in this modern world people should think critical than divergent in their lives. Empathy teaches students to understand and simplify the complicated life. Collaboration include discussion amongst people or group to make things effortless. Moreover liberal arts itself is beauty such as performing arts, it values the beauty of imagination in modern society by art and sculpture.

Bob Bryant, the Executive Director of Fine Arts for Katy ISD in 2000, emphasises the importance of utilizing art in schools’ curriculums: “The arts are what make us most human, most complete as people. The arts cannot be learned through occasional or random exposure any more than math or science can” (Bryant). Art is a way of expression and leads to acquiring a deeper understanding of the details in life. The first day of preschool, teachers teach through the help of art. This is due to the fact that art is the foundation of a child's learning. Art is a way, where one can explore their ideas and thoughts. Creativity should neither be contained nor limited. Art is an outlet used for people to show who they are. The aspect of art is carried along in each generation. Different cultures use art to show who they are as one. Art appeals to people's senses and emotions, which helps people connect with one another. Since art is an essential, integral part in a student's academic learning, schools should make art classes mandatory.

The article highlights the fact that the arts can build a sense of togetherness within schools while at the same time contributing to the success of a variety of learning skills and goals. Exposing children to dance, theatre, visual arts and music in the early grades is extremely beneficial especially for their language development. With there being a significant increase in the number of children enrolling in school today with English as their secondary language, it is important for language and literacy to be introduced in a way that is engaging and memorable to them. A lot of teachers struggle and feel unprepared with helpings these type of students and are constantly looking for fun and innovative ways to reach these students.

Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir. Barbara Streisand said, “Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth,” (Quotations). What is art exactly? Art can come in my shapes and forms. In some cases, art can be used for entertainment purposes, or they can expressed through a debate or argument. It can be personal, for example like perspectives on the way the world is seen, expressing one’s thoughts, emotions, and desires. Artistic creativity is widely common amongst different cultural practices, and express beauty within inherited ideas passed down from generation to generation.

All around the United States, art education programs are overlooked and pushed under the rug in public schools. The arts include musical theatre, drama, photography, pottery, music, choir and literary arts. Most California school board members feel these art programs are not necessary and do not benefit the students’ academic learning in any way. California state code twelve makes it mandatory for students grade Kindergarten through twelve to receive art instruction. Although many are not aware, there is a strong connection between arts education and academic achievement. Unfortunately, due to the most recent budget cuts in many public schools, the art and music classes are first on the list to be cut. I believe art should be incorporated into almost everything that a developing mind learns. Certain forms of artistic practice have been linked to improvement of cognitive capacities thought to be important for academics, for example, research suggests that music training can improve spatiotemporal reasoning, and this may help with certain forms of mathematics learning (Rinne, Gregory, Yarmolinskaya, and Hardiman (2011). Music training can change brain circuitry and can improve general cognition in at least some circumstances. While diligence training in one cognitive area can transfer to improvements in other cognitive skills. Therefore, the arts can play a critical role in improving schools and educational outcomes for all students.

There are many careers that have to rely on the arts and all the rest are influenced or supported by the arts. Art is found in many areas of life to stimulate creativity and expand knowledge. Many politicians decide to cut arts funding because they think the arts is not a necessity in our school systems. They also believe that cutting funding in the arts will allow the United States to excel in the subjects we are failing at in a worldwide standpoint such as the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Although many of them feel that way and want major budget cuts in the arts, the people of our nation can fight and protest the government for what we want. Art integration is very important to classrooms because of cognitive learning, identity, social justice, and future careers. Art is found around every corner.

Would you censor art to protect those that need protection such as the mentally ill? Art is one’s creation of imagination and opinion. For this reason, the Golden Gate Bridge is considered art. Art should not be a place for someone’s death once someone commits suicide that could keep people off the Golden Gate Bridge. There are many other options than altering the bridge and changing its meaning. In this situation art, should not be censored to protect the mentally ill because monuments should not be altered for one’s life they are still able to commit suicide, art has been around for so long why change it now, and it takes away the meaning of the architecture.

Many young girls dream about being ballerinas when they grow up. Most adults think it is sweet, and some parents even sign their children up for dance classes. However, as they age, that dream of being a professional dancer appears to be inadequate. Why is that? In our culture, there is a lack of importance on the arts, and thus, a lack of funding. Many see the arts as frivolous and a cost that is not imperative to the success of a nation. On the other hand, one could ask how a country can be successful without a cultural identity that is largely created by the arts and humanities in the society. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that, “Any ‘advanced civilization’ must fully value the arts, the humanities, and cultural activity” (Deb). Being a professional artist of any kind seems like an unstable career because there is a lack of consistent and substantial funding for them. The only way to change the funding crisis is to fight the cultural tendency to dismiss the importance of the arts. This will happen through educating those who have yet to lose that sense of innocence, wonder, and imagination, and integrating the arts into their academic and social lives.
