As our year of service ends we were reflecting on the 4 Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa and have come to grasp a small understand of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. The foundation of Phi Theta Kappa instills the traits through Leadership Development. The courses available to members will help each gain confidence as each learns what a leader truly is. From a time when achievement was rare, and succeeding among minority was minuscule, a sense of order was needed. During this time Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated came into the world, bringing core values and achievement. Within the five objectives Kappa Alpha Psi showcases the distinction of itself from other fraternities. The founding fathers had the desire to shape a unique group personality different from the other greek letter college organizations, around the idea of achievement. When achievement was mainly concerned with improvement of personal status, security, and meeting the demands of everyday living the founders of the fraternity envisioned something bigger. Thus bringing about the Five Objectives that men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated live by and exemplify on a day to day basis showcasing Achievement in every field of human endeavor.
Before I joined the National Honor Society (NHS), my ideal characteristics for a successful student included earning straight A’s every semester, taking challenging courses, and, ultimately, ranking myself among the top students of my class. I was trapped in my own model student, exhausting myself with grades and incessant school work. It was an endless cycle. However, when I became a member of NHS, I was reborn. The Society’s four pillars—Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character—have gradually reshaped my definition of a successful student.
“This is what Phi Theta Kappa is all about, the community of scholars,” said Straus at the gathering, “The mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to promote enthusiasm in scholarship, leadership and character.”
Every successful leader is built upon the strongest foundations. A foundation that is a conglomerate of scholarship, leadership, service, and character ensures the optimal potential of an individual. The importance of these pillars is most apparent in National Honor Society. The scholarship of an individual sets them above the herd; however, their character, the force that drives them to achieve the impossible, is the mold that shapes the leader they’ll become. Furthermore, service opportunities not only open member's’ eyes to the compassion needed in leaders but also the skills in management, cooperation, and perseverance demanded from them in the community.
Little did I know, the incredible role models of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Ms. Nicki Harper and Ms. Loretta Bookman, wanted to stress the importance of being a lady, a leader and a well-rounded individual. These ladies and the Delta GEMS program influenced my curiosity so much that toward the end of high school, I researched and learned more about Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I learned the members exemplify 3 of my core values: service, leadership and excellence.
Our family has been blessing people by providing a food pantry out of our home for the community for the past two years; before that we did a food ministry out of our church for six years, blessing thousands of family a month. I am very active in our current church, i run the soundboard and the computer/projector during Sunday service. I'm always willing to help others, I have 1700+ volunteer hours over the past seven years. Currently i am holding a 4.00 gpa in my college classes and I'm on the schools president's list. I've recently applied and have been accepted in the Phi Theta kappa honors society.
It is a great honor to receive invitation to apply for membership to the Alpha Theta Kappa. My leadership skills as a gospel singer, interpreter and, treasurer, got developed while serving at my home church in Pakistan. However, it was after coming to Garrett-Evangelical, that I became aware of social justice and what that implies in different settings. During my internship as a Master of Divinity student, I became a bridge between persons from diverse backgrounds. I consider it a blessing to be positioned in the hub of cultures where people from various ethnic, religious, cultural, linguistic, economic and racial backgrounds study at Northwestern University and Garrett-Evangelical. Since I have developed
Phi Theta Kappa is more than just an organization comprised of the top students at two-year universities across the nation, it’s a means of garnering valuable life and business experience while you’re still furthering your education in school. Here are just a few of the benefits you’ll find yourself reaping once you’ve joined ΦΘΚ.
During my sophomore year at Miami Dade College, I decided to run as the President of Phi Beta Lambda, which alongside Future Business Leaders of America is considered the largest career student organization in the world. I had the purpose of reaching and encouraging students, including Biology, Engineering, and Journalism majors to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that this organization offers every year. However, in order to do a successful job, I had to work as a team player alongside my club’s advisor and the rest of the officers. Our major project was to make the state and national conferences affordable to a broader range of students and prepared them for the competitive events.
Helping to build a successful community is part of Kappa Alpha Psi's mission. Lending helpful hands to uplift those in need is a critical building block. As such, the brothers of Natchez Alumni and Gamma Pi are pleased to announce our Suit Drive. This event is for high school juniors and seniors as well as college freshmen. Our aim is to help transform the lives of our male youth. The goal is to build their confidence and aid in dressing them for success as they prepare for college and/or the workforce.
She has a heart to see her students succeed, whether they be officers, members, or even students who are not a part of Phi Theta Kappa. She not only encouraged growth and leadership from the officers, but she expected it from members as well. When we planned our ice cream social for awareness week, Professor K acted as a liaison to guide and direct our officers and contributing members to the right person to make our event successful. She attended the event herself, and took note of the members who were participating. She participated in reaching out to students who were walking, encouraging them to join Phi Theta Kappa. Many of these students were hesitant to join because of the academic vigor it takes to join and maintain membership; however, Professor K simply told them to reach out to the members. She gave them confidence in the support of our organization, by assuring them that every member of Phi Theta Kappa looks to help each other succeed. As a result of her encouraging words, these students because excited to join Phi Theta Kappa because they realized it would be an organization that works to benefit and grow
Tiffany is a great example of a phi theta kappa officer who conducts their position with professionalism. Tiffany has largely contributed with carrying out many components of the honors in action project, specifically the action component. Through Tiffany’s collaboration and network of connections with Bebensee elementary school, the chapter was able to conducts a successful event that positively reflected and promoted our chapter. Tiffany has also expressed a positive and uplifting attitudes throughout the hard work and struggles of reaching all team goals.
“These topics we’re researching are legitimate problems that are going on in the world. If we could do something about it, that would be awesome, and Phi Theta Kappa that promotes that and gives you the opportunity to see something that’s going on in the world and do something about it,” said Chacko.
Building on a strong foundation, the chapter will work toward the four-star and five-star levels over time. Our aim is that the chapter is a four-star chapter by the end of year five of its establishment. Because we are mindful of over-programming and aware that academics should be a student’s first priority, chapters are expected to have no more than two events per week. With this in mind, we would work to meet the needs of the Five Star Program in conjunction with Kappa’s expectations for chapters. Below, we have outlined Kappa’s expectations for chapters that align with the standards within the categories of the Five Star Program. Scholarship
I would first like to begin by thanking the Greek community and members of Panhellenic, IFC and Greek Council for allowing me to apply for this award, I am truly humbled. Pi Kappa Alpha-Alpha Tau experienced a roller coaster of year through 2015. Without delving into great detail the Alpha Tau chapter has made great strides over the past five years, from being on the brink of losing our charter in 2010, to experiencing an arson attack and receiving the most distinguished Pi Kappa Alpha International award this past summer.
