Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
I am honored to submit my candidacy for consideration as one of the two recipients of the Phi Theta kappa Gold Scholarship. I believe that my excellent academic record and active involvement in Phi Theta kappa both locally and regionally makes me a good candidate for the scholarship.
“Additionally, issues of identity and values are important factors in neophytes ' abilities and willingness to learn to write in and for new workplaces, as they must choose between ways of thinking and writing with which they are comfortable and new ways that seem foreign or at odds with their identities and values” (Wardle 285) When I was first accepted into The University of Arkansas, the first thing that came to my mind was to put effort into my grades and into building my resume. Those would be my top priories. Before I knew it I had been accepted into a discourse community of members that were striving for the same ideals that I was-The Greek fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha. Through the proses of being an initiate, I learned life long core values of community between other members. Interviewing the president of Lambda Chi Alpha, Luke Crenshaw, I uncovered the rigorous involvement of academic writing skills and how that plays a giant roll in this discourse community. These benefits are included in the values and beliefs of a discourse community.

Throughout her presidency, Stockard was able to personally ensure Cottey College’s students were held to a high standard of academic excellence. However, as she got older, she wondered who was going to carry on the legacy of her school. Her prayers were answered when she helped to establish Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) in 1918 with seven other women’s junior colleges. PTK originated as Kappa Phi Omicron, an honor society established in 1910 by Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. A meeting was held in 1918 at Stephens College with the Presidents of eight women’s junior colleges. They decided there needed to be an organized honor society for all of them to be a part of, and thus, PTK was born. This new society would give them a common ground to work on, and allowed them to share the value of education with other schools. PTK was based on Phi Beta Kappa, the honor society for senior colleges. The different

"When you get into HCC, you're going to think, ‘Hey, it's just a community college'. You just go to your class — that's all — and then get out. No! It's not. You have got to participate. You got to go to organizations, you go to clubs. There are so many opportunities," said Nga Phan about HCC's student life, "So just look around, befriend students, befriend your professor, be in clubs. There are a lot of opportunities here....don't just go to school and go home — that's not how students are supposed to do [school]."
With that win came national attention and notable praise amongst the higher education community. By the end of the 2011-2012 academic year, I accomplished feats I never imagined possible because I understood the struggle local citizens endured in the Highland Hills community. It was my struggle too. In April 2012, as I was wrapping up my year as Student Government Association President, the HBCU Digest voted us the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Student Government Association of the Year. I was also a runner-up for the HBCU Male Student of the Year, mainly for leadership with the WE ARE NOT TRASH movement. The following month, Paul Quinn College named me Student of the Year, an award I can only credit to the faculty, staff, and students for their unwavering support. The Texas Association of Developing Colleges also honored me with a state leadership award called, “a student growing from academia to global
