The Effects Of Violent Media Violence

Decent Essays

Modern media takes many forms, in the western world especially, violence plays a large role in much of this media. A largely held sentiment is that this violence causes violent or aggressive behavior, evidence however, would say the opposite.
The argument that violent media causes violent behaviors is not a new one, dating back a long way a belief that children or young adults being exposed to violence regularly might induce violence was formed. This belief was not founded in science being formed under typically inductive methods for the time. Arguments similar to this of people or ideas “corrupting the youth” date all the way back to ancient Greece where Aristotle was famously tried for that very charge and sentenced to death. Many have speculated since that it was merely an excuse by powerful or influential men to rid themselves of Aristotle’s dissent or challenge of their ideals. This excuse was again used as an excuse in the 1980s to censor or shut down the rising Hip-Hop movement. This was undoubtedly started from the same racist kind of thinking that brought about segregation. The same argument that was used against artists like N.W.A. has resurfaced in recent years as an argument against violent television/movies and especially videogames.
This theory that violence portrayed in media somehow brings about violent behavior is baseless however and there have been no peer-reviewed studies proving any negative causal effects violent media has. This highlights a problem
