The play The Crucible, was written by Arthur Miller in 1953. It is a story he wrote after his own experience being accused of communism. This affected a lot of well-known people in the United States during this time, and was considered a witch hunt similar to the Salem witch hunts. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible about a man, John Proctor, who has an affair with Abigail Williams. She catches feelings for him and tries to cast a spell on John Proctor’s wife to kill her; this gets out of hand when Abigail’s uncle catches her and some other girls dancing during the spell in the woods. Suddenly, the whole town is living in fear of who is practicing witchcraft, who could be a witch, and innocent people are killed if they don’t confess to being witches. Overall, mass fear and panic, and false accusations are seen over and over throughout the play.
Why The Crucible? You might be thinking, why would the book, The Crucible, be called that, and what does that even mean? In short, a Crucible could be referred to as a melting pot. The dictionary definition of crucible is a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures.
Intolerance in the Darfur Conflicts The theme of intolerance in Arthur Miller's play The Crucible is a powerful depiction of the destructive force of narrow-mindedness and prejudice. The play, set in Salem during the witch trials, showcases how the fear and intolerance of the community lead to the persecution and unjust treatment of innocent individuals. This theme of intolerance resonates strongly with the ongoing conflict in Darfur, where the oppression and violence that have plagued the region for decades have been fueled by similar sentiments of narrow-mindedness and prejudice. In The Crucible, the intolerance of the Salem community is driven by the fear of witchcraft and the perceived threat to the established order. This fear leads to the scapegoating and condemnation of
People in Salem think Witchcraft is real. There proof for example is that they thought was people especially young girls dancing in the woods or in general. Pg. 9 “Uncle we did dance let you tell them I confessed it and I’ll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speaking of witchcraft”. People of Salem don’t have fun or think it is normal for kids to have fun. So when they saw the girls in the woods dancing they thought it was weird. Pg. 10 “this will ruin me if they find out”. Salem is the place where a lot of gullible people are. This my explanation of what happen during the time period of Salem Witch trials.
The Crucible, and How It Portrays the Judicial System By Andrew Welling INTRODUCTION (ref. 1. In The Crucible, the judicial system is portrayed as archaic – considering the time it’s’ taking place in, it accurately represents a 17th century court, even though it is poking fun at how poorly the 20th century court was at that time. In context, the court system in The Crucible used autocratic rule and detested differing ideals, calling them the likeness of Satan as implied in multiple places throughout the text.
There are witches in our school. Does that sound crazy? Like an accusation from 1692 during the times of the witch trials? No, not quite. The belief in witches is still very much alive right now. According to a recent Gallup poll, 21% of Americans believe in witches; 37% in haunted houses and 41% in ESP. Therefore, our belief in the supernatural may be as real now as it was for the people in The Crucible. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1952 about the Salem witch trials that occurred in 1692. At that time, everyone in Salem was paranoid that people, including their friends and family were witches. Over 200 people were accused of being witches and 20 were actually hung. In The Crucible young girls actually tried to participate
After reading “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller I could not believe that some elements from this story actually happened. The book is filled with evil deeds, deception, manipulation, witches, witchcraft and terrible lies that cause destruction in the little village of Salem. It’s rather scary to think that the work of the devil was so prominent during this time period and in other times in history. In the 1950’s it was as if history was beginning to repeat itself; witch hunts were happening again, but this time the cause was different. World War two just ended and the fear of communists in the United States was running high. This time is known for being the era of McCarthyism and the Red Scare, which greatly inspired Arthur Miller to write “The
The Crucible presents itself as one of the most controversial books of all time, seeing as its written by a man who got not just accused of communism, but asked by the FBI to change one of his screenplays because he got wrapped up the ‘witch hunt’ of his time. This books written not only to convey the messages and important lesson from the Salem Trials, but to also draw parallels to the modern events in the lives of the audience. Arthur Miller came up with the richly significant name of his book by sampling bits from linguistic, scientific, and biblical definitions of the word “crucible.”
The Relevance of The Crucible Today In the history of civilization, previous generations have set rules and implemented new concepts and/or ideas for the welfare of humanity. The founding fathers of the United States of America came up with the modern U.S. Constitution as a guideline of how the people and the government should act in order to coexist. Fear is something that causes people to do crazy things. Whenever people fear something, he/she literally begins to think irrationally.
When you think of children, what was the first thing that comes to mind? Reckless? Young? Naïve? Gullible? Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, is a book written about an extraordinary but childlike man who set out on a quest, looking for an adventure of being surrounded by nature. Chris McCandless, who the book is based off of, was a man of wonder. No one was ever certain about what he thought, how he felt, or why he went on this suicide journey. Was it because of his childlike recklessness? Or was it something deeper? Chris McCandless was reckless and along with that came passion, loneliness, and despair. So, can we really judge him when he made the decision to live in the most wild parts of the Alaskan state?
I believe the truth matters more than a man’s good name. If a man lives for a great name, how can they lie their way through life and say they died with a good name. In an extreme circumstances, people may use a “white lie” to save themselves and their name in a situation. People in our society live off a good name. You need a good name to be able to get through in life.

I have had many situations that happened in my life that made me look at things differently and force me change. The most important crucible that I had been through is graduating middle school going into highschool. In middle school if I was acting foolish in class or talking loudly the teachers will just tell me to chill down. They would never get upset to the point they would send me or other students to the office. Often the teachers would always be chill in the classroom and would let the students fool around during class work. Since the teachers never said anything while me and my peers were acting a bit childish we just kept on being ourselves day by day. I always knew not to go to the extreme by disrespecting my teachers but sometimes I would make jokes in the middle of my teacher talking.

I’ve always thought that older brothers/sisters were invincible, that nothing could defect your superhero the person that has always been a role model. That nothing will hurt or even bother your role model. Hard to think that one moment can drastically alter everything that made your superhero super, that one moment can rock your world and everyone in your world. To come to the realization that the world is full of people that marauder. My Crucible isn’t something that happened to me but it affected me personally, changed the way I saw the world that no one is safe from the cruel cold grip that is reality and life. My brother Elvis Tabora strong minded, a good hearted individual but most importantly always had enough mettle to face any problems with two fist in the air. I have never not even once saw him broken, defected or even sad. He was the definition of a Big Brother but that unfortunately did happen. On April 1 2017, April fools the day no one is safe from mischief the day everyone’s insidious side comes out. I am always wiry on that day never could be to safe.I was getting changed to go out, until I was stopped by my mom she had a sad look in her eyes and her face seemed full of sadness I knew this was serious so I sat down she came in and sat down too. “ Christian” she said “Elvis just spoke to me through the phone, that Stephanie has died”. Stephanie was my brother’s girlfriend and I would guess his true love she was crazy in a good way, a very popular and
