I believe the truth matters more than a man’s good name. If a man lives for a great name, how can they lie their way through life and say they died with a good name. In an extreme circumstances, people may use a “white lie” to save themselves and their name in a situation. People in our society live off a good name. You need a good name to be able to get through in life. If a person is arrested, they will have a charge when they are searched up for a job, school, etc. That person's name will be “marked” forever and they will lose their good name. In the story, The Crucible, a person’s reputation and good name is key to living in Salem. Their way of life is guided by their religion of Christianity. If a person commits a sin from the bible, …show more content…
She turned a town completely upside down and had people convinced. Abigail feared getting in trouble for the foolish ritual her and her friends were doing the forest. She threatened all of the girls that were there that night that if anyone tells, she would kill them. When caught in the forest and confronted, she began spilling names and making false accusations to save herself. Some people may say that can be a white lie, but Abigail took things a little too far… She began accusing people and making scenes in the court, pretending she is experiencing some form of spiritual warfare. Every girl that was involved would go along with Abigail’s charades because they feared she would kill them. She had dozens of innocent people hung under fall accusations of witchcraft. She was a cold hearted, ruthless and selfish girl, that did not care for anyone else but herself. After having dozens of people hung, she later returns to the judge and says she had the reverend's wife’s spirit visits her in the night and attempt to kill her. The judge does not believe her this time and says it is impossible for a reverend's families spirit to turn bad. How can he believe her all of the other times, but can assume she is lying now? This shows how allowing spiritual laws can be hard to prove if a person is guilty. Abigail did everything in her power to maintain her good name and she sure put up a
Abigail started out as a good girl , the reverend’s niece, but she made her first terrible mistake during their young teenage lives. Abigail had an inappropriate relationship with a married man named Proctor. That lead to her next mistake of dancing in the woods with a group of girls trying to curse their crush’s wives. This time she got caught by her uncle and had to start several lies. Her punishment after all of her lies and crimes was
When Abigail and the other girls were dancing in the woods, it started as an innocent prank. But when they were caught, Abigail began to say and do anything to try and keep the focus of the town away from the dancing, and toward something much more meaningful: witchcraft. During the trials, Abigail changed being an innocent and pure girl, to a manipulative woman, accusing others in the town of witchcraft. Trying to shift the blame to others, Abigail yells in court, "I want to open myself! I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus!
Then, as the story continues, we see how her persuasive techniques change in order to achieve her purpose. In the beginning of the book we see Abigail talking about one of her friends Betty, who had been spooked when being caught in the forest. She tries to explain that they were doing nothing bad when word came out of them doing witchcraft in the forest. As well as when they were discovered
Abigail’s deceitfulness plays a role in how the whole town and council are on her side, with little to no
She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a-.” (Miller 471). This is also important because Abigail is probably the worst person in the village and she acts like she is perfect. She lies to everyone and basically blackmails people.
This is shown when she is with Parris, she talks back to defend her name in Act One, she suggest to Parris,” Uncle, the rumor of witchcraft is all about; I think you’d best go down and deny it yourself.” Abigail is aggressive when Mary Warren suggested that they should confess to dancing in the woods. Abigail threatens them, “I have seen some reddish work done at night and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!”. I can infer based on Act one that Abigail’s life would be full of lies. Abigail was a 17 year old girl, and back then girl were treated bad because they were not considered powerful, so in my opinion she is trying to change the perception of women back then to gain power and to be more considered among people.
Abigail is fully to blame for the salem witch trials; she started something she couldn't finish so she left a big mess behind. Abigail is a mean person who always wants her way, no matter who she hurts. throughout the whole play she accuses people and lies; causing pain and suffrage. She seemed to only care for John Proctor. Many innocent people were put in jail, hung, and had their name and reputation ruined in the community and church.
When Abigail lied to everyone and said she could see the devil and the spirits, she is deemed as deceitful. She lied to the other girls and convinced them that they all see the spirits and to all lie to the courts. They all lied to the courts to convict many people of being witches that were in fact not witches. Abigail and the girls were very dishonest and lied to everyone and got many people killed.
Abigail Williams did many things in the town of Salem Massachusetts. Most of these acts were based on lies, and deception. Abigail lied to the court, was involved in an affair, and basically murdered innocent people in the town. She could have been arrested, or even hanged if anyone found out about these crimes. The only reason she wasn’t accused was because people were afraid of her. First let’s talk about why people were afraid of her.
Abigail has many traits, like dishonesty, controlling, and evil. These traits make a lot of bad things happen in the story. People have died from it and have suffered from loved ones dying. Abigail Williams has many traits one of them is her dishonest nature. For example, when people started saying there was witch craft in Salem and all the fingers started pointing at her
One of the final tests of Abigail’s character was to what degree of evil she really was. Although seeming innocent among the girls in court, Abigail was the source of all evil in the town at this time. Many times throughout the story, Abigail had opportunities to take her evil manipulating personality to a new high, and she always did. A good example of this is when Abigail had a chance to save Marry Warren, and confess to faking their behavior of fainting when a supposedly bewitched person was before them. Instead of taking a step towards goodness, she kept evil on her side and decided to show no remorse for Marry Warren.
Abigail is a liar. She immediately rejects all association between herself and witchcraft. When Abigail's uncle, reverend
Furthermore Abigail has shown she can not be trusted. For example, she lied about conjuring spirits in the woods and when the other girls said they should tell the truth she told them they would be hanged so we have to lie. She would say are make any one tell a lie to stay out of trouble. She accused others of witchcraft
Isn't America the home of Liberty and Justice for all? Well then, you’d be surprised to hear that every year there are hundreds of cases where confessions are either coerced or otherwise forced through illegal means by the police.(Source #3) Through the novel “The Crucible” and the article “A True Confession” legal processes can be seen to have a bias against defendants, in that defendants can be prey to coercion and intimidation by the prosecution or law enforcement, reflecting major flaws in justice systems themselves despite the expectation by people that justice systems ought to be fair. In addition, the similar injustices of these two, despite their extremely different backgrounds, can be seen as something inherent to human nature and the way that authority is formed in societies and how that authority tends towards injustice towards those that it has control over.
If Abigail was not worried about the hysteria that will start because of the accusations she will later receive she would not have told herself and others to lie about it, showing that people will lie in face in hysteria.
