What would life be like without censorship? Though there might be upsides to it, such as more freedom of speech, it could also cause some problems. Not only would we be exposing children to many horrors of the world, we also would be doing nothing to prevent offensive and oppressive content in the media. Therefore, some censorship is necessary for all people; however, in most cases, we should be allowed access to most information in society.
Censorship is oft used to mute freedom of speech and self-expression, which are human rights. We need them to express individuality, to differentiate ourselves from each other. There was a teenaged boy who came out as gay, and when he told his story, it was censored from his school newspaper.

However, when it is abused to inflict distress upon other people, then censorship becomes a priority. This is especially evident in the media and the Internet; offensive and oppressive content is almost impossible to avoid. Some people believe seeing racism or sexism, or etcetera in TV shows, or movies, or even video games, won’t hurt anyone as long as you can recognise it “isn’t real” and shouldn’t be practiced in real life. Although this isn’t quite true--things that promote or even just include oppressive content always add to oppression in society. Because it’s so normal to see in the media, it becomes something that’s seen as socially acceptable and okay. And again, especially with children; they’re so impressionable, they grow up with these sexist or violent or racist video games and movies; they become accustomed to this sort of oppressive behaviour found in the media. Even if we say we don’t agree with it, because of how offensive it can be, continuing to support said shows and movies only supports whatever content they hold. And that isn’t okay: oppression such as this contributes to inequality in society. Therefore, such offensive content should be censored from the media, and our freedom of speech online should be limited to our opinions and self-expression, not spreading hatred and unrest through bullying.
Whether something should be censored or not depends entirely on what is being questioned;
Censorship: Is It Necessary? A persuasive essay written by Mark Pierce Censorship is often used by governments to hide certain things from the public; things that are offensive. These can include (but are not limited to) being insulting to religion, being racist, or being too violent. Despite these reasons, however, censorship doesn’t need to be mandatory to protect the people.
Censorship is the assassination of ideas. It causes people to be ignorant which makes them not pay any attention to the world around them. Many people see what is happening right in front of them but choose to not direct their attention, not knowing if something terrible is going on. Censorship conceals all the things that would make people have their own voice. It prevents all of the ideas that are made from people to be heard.
Although we, as citizens of this country, are guaranteed freedom of speech and press by the first amendment, we are encouraged to “watch what we say”. In order to avoid unnecessary violence and to keep people from being offended, it is recommended the certain things be censored. While many may look at this censorship as a well-needed percussion it can reversely be seen as going against one's first amendment rights, in itself causing controversy.
“Censorship reflects a society’s lack of confidence in itself.” This quote from Potter Stewart exemplifies how censorship is used to control society and the freedom of speech. When freedom of speech and expression are limited, everyone is very similar and there are no differences in society, which does not help society grow as a whole. No one has any contradicting ideas, which sounds like a good thing, but realistically is not. The expression of ideas and ideologies often forms groups in a society, and people look to these groups for comfort and social validation.
Censorship takes many forms in our society today. First it takes the form of political correctness. The purpose
John Pilger said ‘’ the censorship is such on television in the u.s that films like mine don’t stand a chance’’. Censorship in the news helps, but leaves out details that are important. News articles can relate being blacked out on certain words and important facts.’’ the goal of socialism is communism’’ { Lenin} Censorship in phones is one problem because the government can listen to our phone calls and see our text messages. One, people don’t want anyone but the person they're talking listen to their calls or reading their texts. Censorship in games is about parents not wanting children to play games with violence because they think it can corrupt their minds and they might act it out in real life. Video games are bad for you just like rock n roll [Miyamoto]Censorship in internet is about the government trying to hide things from kids.When the government did that ,they mess up important charity sites and bank sites. Censorship helps us by keeping us safe censorship can stop war from happening. Kids can not be show dirty pic and videos with censorship. Censorship can let government get your name and information.In conclusion, censorship is unnecessary because it hides the truth from parents and
Imagine if a society controlled what people see, hear, or did. This type of censorship is harmful to a society. Everyone needs to understand each other’s freedoms. This issue is discussed in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In this society, they can not read certain things and people decide to commit suicide over it. Censorship takes away our rights as individuals. It violates the First Amendment, keeps people from learning, and gives the government total control.
Censorship is one of the most controversial topics in America today. It provides rules or discipline for new technology. It covers music, video games, movies, plays, and the internet. Censorship is all around us, but how has it affected our nation as a whole? Censorship is the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are “offensive,” happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others.
Censorship occurs when information is forbidden; for example, in books, movies, newspapers, and the Internet. Books are banned when they contain objectionable language, sexual content, political content, and in the case of government censorship, knowledge. Some people argue that censorship is necessary to protect children from explicit language or sex scenes, and to preserve morals or religious values. Those against censorship argue that historical facts shouldn’t be censored, so that people can learn from history. Opponents also claim that censorship invalidates their intellectual freedom; which the United Nations proclaimed as a fundamental human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Finally, censorship decreases the quality
The history of the world has undoubtedly been dominated by an endless struggle for power. However, after a brief glimpse into the pages of history it should not take long to realize that the trick to maintaining power lies in the control of information. Even the most fearsome military generals of the past acknowledge the power of the mind and ideas over lethal force. Former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin once said “… [Ideas] are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, then why should we let them have ideas.” Stalin’s quote personifies the main concept of this literature review which will be discussing the history of government censorship and its effects that are
All children are born with innocence; they have no knowledge of anything bad in the world. Some television programmers seem to oblivious to this fact. The morbid content shown on popular television shows and movies today is incriminating evidence of this. It is as if the concept of censorship is foreign to them. The legal definition of censorship is the act of banning any or all media resulting from the presumption that its content is perceived to be immoral by the Federal Government of the United States. Censorship involves the banning of any immoral content. Much of broadcasted media
Imagine a world where there was violence whenever you turned the corner. People swearing all over the streets, no matter who was standing next to them. A world where children grew up listening to 18+ music as they fell asleep. Soon, this will be close to what our world will be. Now, imagine a different world where there was little violence, less swearing, and a happier community. If you could choose between the two worlds, you would probably choose the second one, right? Even though the Freedom of Speech is in the First Amendment, the better option-that would be for the common good of our country is censorship. Censorship is needed in our lives because it helps prevent unneeded violence, makes better liked songs, and makes songs more appropriate
Censorship may be protection from inappropriate materials, but it also limits free speech. For the limitation of free speech, it is reasonable why people are emphatically against censorship. It is understood that there is a need to filter some of the materials released in today’s society, but too much is being done by people who have no right meddling with everyone’s rights. Civilization has always been plagued by a never ending battle being fought over what is deemed right and wrong. In today’s culture, censorship oppresses everything in the media. From movies and music to television and even news stories, most of the content viewed today has been filtered one way or another. Restrictions have been in place since early societies have been
If it is uncomfortable to read and discuss, so be it. Most things that matter deeply are.” -USA Today. Today Censorship also affects more than the children though. It really affects everyone equally. It allows the government to have too much control over what we learn and know. What if we lived in a dystopian society. For example, if you’ve ever seen the movie or read the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, the city kept everyone from learning about the world’s past and why they have to obey their rules and only their rules and do whatever job they assign them. Private groups and public authorities in various parts of the country are working to remove or limit access to reading materials, to censor content in schools, to label controversial views. Most people believe that free communication is essential to the preservation of a free society and a creative culture. Another touchy topic about they types of censorship we have is open religion. We have the Freedom of Religion. But many schools don’t allow religious practices, teachings, or even how they dress. What’s wrong with anyone expressing their religion and how they think of God peacefully and freely? America is
Imagine a society without censorship, where everyone knows each other’s secrets, it would be lethal for society. What would happen if people knew one’s weaknesses?. There is evil that needs to be censored. Censorship is necessary in our society for many different reasons. It protects nations, prevents conflict in society, it protects the morals/privacy of people, and it is also helpful for children.
