What is it that entices people into reading about horror and darkness that has a mystifying attraction? Gothic Literature incorporates many unique characteristics that keeps the reader intrigued. Some examples of the characteristics that may be included in American Gothic are: fright, uncertainty, darkness, and isolation. The evolution of entertainment media has created a new demand for the genre’s darkness and horror. Some questions that will be answered are -- What is American Gothic and how has the genre been defined? Is the genre still relevant today? What is it about gothic tales that captivates and intrigues us -- that helps to elucidate how Gothic Literature has evolved and has continued to intrigue many for countless years. People continue to learn and have interest in this genre in new ways. In the past, most of Gothic Literature was in the form of written works, but it is more common today for it to be represented in movies and TV shows. Media is being used today to entice people into wanting more. One of the major sedulous authors of American Gothic Literature, Edgar Allan Poe, showed these mysterious and gloomy elements in his short stories. A quote from one of Poe’s short stories states, “From that chamber, and from that mansion, I fled aghast. [...] for the vast house and its shadows were alone behind me” (“The Fall of the House of Usher”). The tactics Poe uses creates a sense of mystery and suspense about what is going to happen next. “[...] and the deep and dank tarn at my feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the “House of Usher”” (“The Fall of the House of Usher”). This short story then takes a sudden turn when the house he is running away from collapses behind him. The ending to the story continues the theme of mystery and leaves the reader asking questions and wanting to know more. The way Poe wrote influenced many people today and has changed the way Gothic Literature is viewed. Many gothic-creators have followed in his footsteps and used the tactic of leaving the reader/viewer thinking and on the edge of the cliff.
