Comparing The Fall Of The House Of Usher And House Taken Over

Although Both Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “ House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar have settings set in large, old, spooky houses, the setting is different because Edgar Allan Poe’s setting s in a much older than House Taken Over. The author in “The Fall of the House of Usher” also relies time more on the supernatural in his setting with visions of ghosts and figures while the “ House Taken Over” is set in a normal old house. Gothic literature is a literary genre that began in england in the late 1700’s that “Gothic” refers to medieval buildings, such as castles that were seen typically as dark, dreary, gloomy and mysterious which inspired a mood for many books. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a good of example of gothic literature because it had a gloomy tone commonly found in most gothic literature. This can be found in the first paragraph when the narrator says “ a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit”. The characters often have an unimpressed tone where they are unimpressed or not surprised by the supernatural events occurring in their everyday life. “House Taken Over” is a good example of Magical realism in paragraph 8 and 12 when the brother said “i had to shut the door to the passage. They've taken over the back part” and Irene said “ In that case we’ll have to live on this side”. These lines show magical realism because the character act as if they are almost used to these supernatural events occurring in their house.
