The “Blurry” Line Between Bill Cosby and Dr. Huxtable
Bill Cosby is one of the most pronounced and well recognized actors of all time. The Cosby Show gave invisible African-Americans representation in what felt like a white-dominated society. Although the fame and recognition, Cosby has “been accused by nearly 60 women of either rape, drug facilitated sexual assault, sexual battery, child sexual abuse, and/or sexual misconduct.” (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) These public allegations have caused previous awards to be revoked, many companies have also disowned Cosby, including actions such as cancelling reruns of his shows. Cosby's legacy shouldn’t go to waste due to the allegations. The majority believe, the allegations made against Cosby
In a deposition, Camille Cosby claimed that she never read her husband Bill Cosby’s deposition in 2005, in which he admitted that he gave Quaaludes to women he wanted to have sex with, according to People, March 9, 2016.
Toward the end of December, Bill Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault in the case filed by Andrea Constand, and an arrest warrant was issued. A frail and scared looking Bill Cosby went to court. He did not enter a plea at the time, but he surrendered his passport, paid 10 percent of the $1 million bail, and had his mug shot taken.
I thought the Bill Cosby trial was very interesting. One simple reason why it caught my eye with all those females saying he did rape me 15 years ago and etc. It was sorta of like a train reaction if you understand what I mean. I guess I had never experience what those women went threw but i wonder why the speak up now , why not earlier?. It did surprise me to a point how there was no evidence to make a case. I understand it happened so long ago but I wonder if Bill Cosby had good connection with people in court house. I always think differently because I watch to much crime shows.
I concur with Wickham’s argument; Cosby’s refusal to answer this question is not helping his case. In an attempt to take the moral high ground by refusing to acknowledge these allegations as serious, he is convincing no one of his innocence. Cosby lost even more support after it was discovered in the deposition notes that he admitted getting quaaludes,. But I don’t think that he will admit it on his own. So much resources has gone into dismissing the allegations. But sexual assault is a serious issue. Just answer the question, Mr.
Bill Cosby has been on a downfall to 2004, thrashing dark individuals for enduring high school pregnancies, posse brutality and a general breakdown of qualities in their groups. He impelled much discussion when he initially communicated irritation with the conduct of "lower financial" blacks, as he called them. Basically, he wanted to stop letting blacks think that the image they were giving off was okay and it’s not. Yet, after four years, there are significantly more adherents. Furthermore, some of those adherents say that Cosby is persistently doing the occupation that dark pioneers have neglected to
Moreover, Cosby was a beloved comedian. As aforementioned, African-Americans loved him because he surmounted racial confinements and became, “the first African-American to star in prime-time, with the 1960s hit I Spy, and then as ‘America’s Dad,’ Dr. Cliff Huxtable, on the top-rated Cosby Show,” (Seal 3). Furthermore, America adored him because he was an extraordinary comedian filled with charisma. Not only was Cosby charming on screen, but he was also captivating in person. Cosby used his immaculate reputation and charm to seduce women, or more accurately: befriend them before drugging and raping them. For example, Victoria Valentino, one of his innumerable victims, wrote, “I was sickened by what was happening to me and shocked that this man
In examining the political life of Bill Clinton, five major scandals stick out: his draft record; Gennifer Flowers and Infidelity; the Marijuana controversy; Whitewater; the Lewinsky Affair. Any one of these scandals could easily – and have on numerous occasions– ruin a political career. Yet, in each of these episodes Clinton was unusually adept at surviving and restoring his image.
Throughout Shakespeare’s plays, a vital aspect in his writing is similarity to classic Greek tragedy; specifically including a tragic hero, who is identified by a detrimental flaw ingrained in their character, eventually causing their demise. Bill Cosby, a beloved family comedian, prominent figure in American television, and an imperative influence on American’s view of black families, depicts a modern day tragic hero. However, like all tragic heroes, Bill Cosby had a downfall, as Mark Seal states in his article, “The One Accuser who might bring Bill Cosby down for Good,” he allegedly committed over 60 sexual assaults and rapes. Therefore, it is apparent that Bill Cosby portrays a tragic hero because he was an outstanding figure in the civil rights movement. He was beloved; nevertheless, he destroyed his life work, reputation, and family by sexually assaulting young women throughout his life.
Gay cites Bill Cosby and Don Lemon to illustrate this problem. Bill Cosby had long been respected and often seen as a father figure too, in the black community. At a 2004 NAACP ceremony, Cosby made a similar speech to his op-ed for the New York Post, admonishing the working class black community and essentially blaming them for their financial dilemmas, dubbed as the “Pound Cake Speech”. Don Lemon is the second special case cited; Lemon attempts to shame black men for “sagging” their pants by making a farfetched claim that the act is linked to prison homosexual intercourse. Lemon is a gay black man but still, through his views, shows that he sees the white heterosexual male as the cultural ideal. The rest of Lemon’s comments reiterate the same dialogue of respectability politics Cosby used, that if black people worked harder and presented themselves better they would gain acceptance from White America. These black men, like many other black people, have bought into this same “If one then all” logical fallacy about racial oppression; that if they managed to “bypass” white supremacy, then other black people have no excuse to be in their current positions. Respectability politics is a form of denial, to rationalize and justify racial prejudice and oppression. Gay notes that
I see what you mean about the movie Hustle and flow depicting African American as drug user, violent individuals who used foul languages and sex as a mean of making a living. This movie is just like the movie I reviewed Pariah, which depicts African American living in an unstable environment. I believe displaying African American in such a negative way causes other races to develop an image in their head that is not always true. Because every race has individuals that uses drug, sell drug and exploit women. I believe there should be more positive film depicting African American, so other races can see there are some livings below the poverty line that are law-obeying citizens. As a counselor, I would need to explain the importance of race during
The Bill Cosby scandal is a very serious situation. However, you cannot deny his talent as a phenomenal actor. Of course, it is important to be mindful of rape and sexual abuse victims because it is a very touchy subject. I wouldn’t mind watching the episode because there is a difference between who he played on TV as an actor and the human being ‘Bill Cosby’. This was a scripted TV show, which is different from a reality TV show. I actually feel bad for celebrities because they are constantly judged and ridicule for things that may not be true. If he is convicted, then my opinion may change but for now I don’t agree with removing his content. You also have to be aware of the other actors that were in the episode too, were the guilty? Absolutely
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” Barack Obama. The question is always asked does the media reflect the reality of society, or does society try and imitate the reality shown by the media? There are a number of stereotypes associated with African Americans in our society such as African American men are athletes, rappers, criminals, deviant, streetwise, uneducated, and unemployed just to name a few. African Americans in the media have changed through the years. The history of African Americans on TV or minorities in general is hampered by the racial conflicts and segregation that are embedded in American society. Historically, black actors have been grouped stereotypically and assigned to comedy. This has often been traced to the genre of black minstrelsy that was popular in the early 20th century.
We hear information everyday but don’t mean we receive it the same way just like the game of telephone. Some people change their information just so they can sound better, or others they can tell it were they are the victim of the story depending on the situation. For example the Michelle Obama incident where she changed her story based on her situation at the time, “sure, she told the same story a few years ago with a totally opposite meaning... it has Ben Trovato’s fingerprints all over it”(Tracinski). If we were to hear that on television not many people would have question the fact the she told the story differently, because at that moment we were focused more on the fact of racism then the story itself, but she did the Ben Trovato effect
As a young multiracial girl, I remember watching the Cosby Show trying to understand the black community. I grew up with my white mother and siblings, so I had no real experiences with how blacks act in their own society. I only knew what little interaction I had at school and in my neighborhood, which is not much because I was a scared child. I did not go outside too often without my siblings, and for how I look, going outside with your white siblings and going outside alone are two very different experiences. (1) This article’s basic point was the realization of how American’s, both black and white, have ignored the crimes Bill Cosby has committed over the years simply because he made them feel good about themselves and their country. Bill Cosby has been accused of drugging and rapping over a dozen women, and he constantly accuses the black community of causing their own dismay. In the Cosby Show, he gave no blame to whites for how they have mistreated blacks over the last five or six decades. He tried to say racist and prejudice people were no more, and it was up to blacks to fix their own problems. The author not only thinks this is absurd, but the author also cannot see how an entire country can be alright with what this man has done and continue to consider him “the best man” or “the greatest comedian that ever lived.” (2) I completely agree with this articles point. Bill Cosby is a menace, and he will never fully understand what blacks went through back then or what
The Legal Dictionary defines the invasion of privacy as “dealing with intrusion into an individual’s private life. It is a tort that allows the person whose privacy was invaded to file a lawsuit against the person intruding upon his or her privacy. Laws governing the right to privacy do not treat all people the same, however, as public figures, such as politicians, are commonly not afforded the same rights of privacy as laypeople. Unfortunately, this law was no protection for the comedian Bill Cosby. On June 5th, USA Today ( ), as well as the majority of news sources reported Bill Cosby’s trial for the alleged sexual assault of Andrea Constand will start. According to newspaper sources, Cosby has been the center of accuations of over 60 women who have accused the icon of comedy of sexual abuse ranging from assault to drugging women. These alleged assults go back decades ago. According to the USA Today(), a former Canadian basket star, Constand reported that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in his Elkins Park mansion in Pennsylvania by giving her wine and three pills that he claimed to be herbal medication that releive stress (Vulture,2017) ). Constand asserts that this left her with the inability to speak or move after 30 minutes. Constand claims, it was then that Cosby “sexually violated me without me consenting ().” Constand, at the time, worked at Cosby’s alma mater, Temple University as the director of operations ofwomen’s basketball team. She met Cosby in 2001
