DeWayne Wickham argues against Confederate flag supporters who want the flag to remain flying at the state capital. Supporters say the flag symbolizes the bravery of Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War, but Wickham cites the bigoted reason for the conflict: white supremacy. He argues that the flag symbolizes the Confederacy, who tried to break away from the United States of America to keep African Americans slaves. Therefore, the flag symbolizes white supremacy. Wickham mentions that many white supremacists use the Confederate flag to support their views, as was seen in the case of Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old who killed nine churchgoers because of their race. Wickham maintains that historically, racism is the reason behind …show more content…
I think that it is undeniable that white supremacy is part of the Confederacy’s past and the main motivation behind its secession from the United States. I don’t think the Confederate flag symbolizes racism for every single person, but to many it does. One of those people, Dylann Roof, killed nine people because they were black. However, Wickham’s argument fails to inform the reader why the Confederate flag was flying at the capital in the first place. At first, I assumed that it had always been there when, in fact, it was placed there 100 years after the Civil War. The flag began flying there in 1961 as a silent protest to the desegregation movement from the South Carolina government. The purpose of our government is to protect the rights of its citizens. All citizens. Because it was placed at the state in support of white supremacy and keeping African Americans in a lower status, I agree with Mr. Wickham. Take the flag …show more content…
Cosby and his lawyers have dismissed accusations from over 40 women that Cosby drugged and raped them, but it was discovered in the 2005 deposition that Cosby admits to obtaining quaaludes to give them to women with whom he wanted to have sex. Wickham says that this is the closest evidence that allegations from the women are true. He also says that Cosby may be forced to answer this question. Cosby was sued in May by one of his accusers because Cosby’s lawyer called her accusation “a fabricated lie.” Wickham doubts that his lawyers will somehow get him out of this civil suit, where Cosby will be faced with this question. Wickham says it will be best for him if he just answers the question, rather than being forced to through this civil suit. I concur with Wickham’s argument; Cosby’s refusal to answer this question is not helping his case. In an attempt to take the moral high ground by refusing to acknowledge these allegations as serious, he is convincing no one of his innocence. Cosby lost even more support after it was discovered in the deposition notes that he admitted getting quaaludes,. But I don’t think that he will admit it on his own. So much resources has gone into dismissing the allegations. But sexual assault is a serious issue. Just answer the question, Mr.
The author mentioned that some citizens are still perturbed by the Confederate flag. While the number is slowly waning, many citizens were a part of the civil rights movement. They watched racist people protest against them using the flag as a symbol of racism, oppression, and hatred. To some, the flag may serve as a permanent reminder that racism is not truly dead in America.
For decades, there have been disputes over the presence of the Confederate flag over the South Carolina State House. Some felt that the flag represented the tradition and culture of their state, as South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union. However, many others thought it was a symbol of the inhumane treatment of millions of people before the abolishment of slavery. Since slavery was such a struggle for so many people, many others feel that it is strongly offensive. Joe Davidson, author for the Washington Post and the Federal Diary, described the flag as treasonous. The United States Constitution states, “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them” which is what happened during the Civil War.
The Confederate flag has now become a hot issue for South Carolina, which is the last state to have the original Confederate flag still flying on its Statehouse. What got the State’s attention was the economic boycott of South Carolina that was announced on January 1992 by the NAACP to pressure the State to remove the Confederate flag off of its Statehouse in Columbia. The NAACP’s removal request is based on the fact that they, the anti-flag groups, claim that the meaning of the Confederate flag is one of hate and discrimination. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently whom are called the pro-flag groups. They claim that the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage
Unintentional or accidental racism is not a valid argument, since there is always something behind those words and actions that shows the whole picture of the self. While it is true that our generations did not start this nation, we have the power to transform it and to change ourselves and for the future generations who would view our present as part of their history, in other words, we can change the course that history will take. The Confederate flag belong in history books, text books and museums, which reflects that it is part a controversial past in America’s history which can be study, dislike and appreciated for what it was, but ones someone displays that flag or wear it and claims Southern pride, it is action with purpose and intent,
I do dislike what the confederate flag stands for, but I do see the need to allow for it to stay. Now as I said before I do not support what the flag means, but I do support the first amendment that guarantees freedom of speech. Banning the confederate flag would be an instance of censorship that would set a dangerous precedence. You set the precedence that anything that is found offensive can be banned. You allow for censorship to ban your freedom of speech because some found it offensive. I always quote the great philosopher known as Voltaire when situations such as these arrive. “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.” Now weather the state chooses to remove the flag from public property
There is no way humanly possible that these Bill Cosby Allegations are not true with all the 13 of the Women who stood forward and accused him of sexual abuse. Now said in the paragraphs before, the multiple women who accused Bill Cosby of sexual abuse and misconduct provided different stories with multiple similarities in them. This on its own is just a very obvious clue to the fact that he has sexually abused these women, along with how many stories there are. The first allegation was made by Sunni Welles in March of 2015 stating that, “Cosby raped her twice when she was an aspiring singer in the mid-1960s by drugging her drink” (Littlefield).
The American South. An area full of rich history and the home to some of the nation’s largest conflicts throughout history, such as the civil war and the civil rights movement. Southerners have always been proud of their heritage despite its rocky parts and display it for all to see with a 150 year old flag. This is proving to be problematic, though, as the Confederate flag they are all so proud of, is really only 50 years old and has been associated with ideals of white supremacy and racism. Some Southerners and other Americans choose to not believe the truth about the flag, others were never taught the truth. However, it is incredibly important in forming an opinion on the flag, and to whether or not the flag must be removed from state buildings. And the truth is, due to its historical affiliation to racist whites in the South, white supremacy groups, and recent events such as the Charleston Shooting, the Confederate rebel flag should not be flown on state buildings as it is not culturally sensitive to African American people who have been targeted by these people.
Bill Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault involving “Temple University employee” that happen a decade ago. Andrea Constand the victim said that Cosby gave her quaaludes then sexually assault her. Constand filed a civil suit against cosby and demanding for the lawsuit to be public and Bill Cosby said “yes” to the question. Over “a dozen women claim that they were drugged and molested by the comedian”.
All the conflict the Confederate battle flag has raised in the past month elevates the question “should the flag stay up or be taken down.” Many states have already taken it down from official buildings. Other questions appear asking if the flag symbolizes racism or heritage. As said by Coulter “Think of all the actual people you know, Southern or Yankee. Have any of them ever expressed support for slavery? Ever, ever, ever? No they haven 't” (Battle Over Flag). No one wants to see slavery come back. The Civil War and slavery is definitely a big scar on the United States. The flag does not represent any of this; the Confederate flag stands as a symbol of heritage in the eyes of many people, but as a racist disgrace in the
The first reason the confederate flag should be taken down off government property is, because it is racist. The whole reason the confederacy was formed was, because the south wanted to keep state's power over the federal government, so in effect they could keep the slaves. Anybody that flies this flag states he or she is for slavery. The flag symbolizing racism is undeniable. In fact, the KKK was alongside the confederate army and slavery ended the same year that the civil war ended. The flag has never been used for good purposes other than to represent white supremacy. The confederacy is in some american’s heritage. However, whether confederate soldiers that fought had owned slaves or not they were still fighting to keep slavery legal. Even
This viewpoint can be found in Eric Foner’s article “Rebel Yell” which is published in a well-known liberal magazine The Nation. Foner who is a historian believes that the main cause of the Civil War was the South’s opposition to freeing slaves. He states that slavery was the big reason why the Civil War was started and that all of the other issues stemmed off of it. This view is shared among the anti-flag supporters as seen in this quotation from another anti-flag article. “Try as we may to pretend that slavery wasn’t a big issue as any other, the truth is, had the South been agreeable to the idea of ending slavery, then the civil war may very well have never happened”(Amy par. 2). Foner then uses logos by explaining how the Declaration of the Immediate Causes of Secession shows evidence of this in its causes of secession. “To understand what the flag now flying in Columbia represents, one need only read the Declaration of Immediate Causes of Secession, adopted by South Carolina secession convention in December 1860”(Foner par. 2). Foner gives some examples of the declaration being about slavery by quoting some things it stated, and one quotation out of the Declaration of Immediate Causes of Secession is about Lincoln being a man “whose
Is the Confederate flag really a flag of hate? Contrary to popular belief, the Confederate flag does not stand for racism, it stands for freedom. It stands for the men who lost their lives fighting for a doomed country, white and black. It stands for not letting others push you around and control you. I stands for the “bad side” in the Civil War. It is the proof that despite the fact that we boast about being stubborn, we are ignorant to the fact that all we do is follow the crowd. It represents a piece of history incredibly rich, yet so full of sorrow, that we are trying to erase. But people do not see this, they only see hate, and they are too oblivious to truly understand what this symbol of liberty stands for. This is why the
One of the most trending topics in America right now is the Confederate Flag and whether or not it 's racist. 42 percent think the flag represent southern heritage and the other 42 percent think it 's racist and should be taken down. 75 percent believe it 's racist and only one in ten will agree that it is southern heritage. Depending on what region is asked about if it is racist, there are different answers. The Midwest say it is racist and the south, of course, say it 's not racist. A poll showed that African Americans, Democrats, and the highly educated were more likely to perceive the flag negatively. The Confederate States of America came into existence on February 4, 1861. It had six states at first and they were the Deep South. Those states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. After April 1861 four upper south states joined. They were Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. They made they 're own court system and congress. It reflected a lot of the American government. The confederate flag should be taken down because it is a symbol of hate, rebellion and racism.
Dabney is an African-American and European descent whose parents went to a segregated school in Virginia. His great-grandmother of three generations before him were free blacks before the Civil War, but during the war lived in fear that they would be kidnapped and forced to submit to slavery, thus living in constant fear. His grandfather of three generations before him was a white slave owner. This side of the family is where Dabney has a connection with past family members that were Confederate soldiers and members of the Virginia 1861 Secession Convention. His belief is that the Confederate flag represents the men who died at such battles like Manassas, Shiloh, and Gettysburg. He believes that the flag has been a representation of white supremacists groups in America but to deny the historical value of the Confederate flag would just be as wrong as the white supremacists. Dabney’s belief is that people cannot ignore prejudice or the symbol of prejudice by the flag, but that removing the flag from public display will not stop the white supremacists, or the prejudice that they adhere to. He believes that removing the flags would not stop the country from jailing more minorities than whites, and that this country needs to serve its people by resolving these problems with real congressional help and by cultural change and education and not by arguing over a piece of fabric.
Thesis Statement: Three reasons why Confederate monuments or flags should be removed are they lie to themselves (white supremacists) by honoring the hero, even though they know they did wrong, The Nazi flag and the Confederate battle flag were designed by groups that rejected the founding American creed of the Declaration of Independence, that “all men are created equal, and It was a flag flown by a few regiments in the Civil War but widely popularized later by the Ku Klux Klan.
