Henry Darger was one of the innovators in collage art, and as a collage artist I have an extreme respect for his innovation in the field. Darger was extremely reclusive during his lifetime and his vast catalog of work (including a 15,145 fully illustrated manuscript) was only discovered until after his death. I was a huge fan of Darger's work at first sight. His use of color and collage astounded me, Darger's work was confusing, colorful, and some what terrifying. Which was everything I wanted to be as an artist. Darger's existence on the fringe of the art world, and his disdain for the concepts of art galleries and the mainstream art culture at the time, really spoke to me as an artist. Darger's true talent is his work spoke for itself,
Julie Becker was born in 1972, and passed away in 2016 at the age of 43[i]. Los Angeles was an integral part of her life as she grew up, created, and died in L.A; however she studied briefly at Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin in 1991 and completed a residency in Basel, Switzerland at Stiftlung Laurenz-Haus Foundation. Becker was the daughter of artists[ii], and subsequently grew up in constant travel from one apartment to the next while her parents worked odd jobs to survive. In lieu of finishing her senior year at Santa Monica High School, she became the youngest student ever to attend California Institute of the Arts in 1989 at the age of 16. From CalArts in Valencia, Becker received her BFA in 1993, and her MFA in 1995. Paul Schimmel, curator at the L.A Museum of Contemporary Art, selected Becker’s MFA thesis project, Researchers, Residents, A Place to Rest 1993-96, for the 23rd São Paulo Biennial, where she was the youngest participant.

Henry Ossawa Tanner is an African-American artist. His works often subvert racial stereotypes and display his experiences as an African-American. The Annunciation (1898) depicts a traditional biblical scene in a modern manner; the painting portrays the well-known scene of Gabriel appearing before Mary to deliver news that she is to be the mother of Christ, however instead of merely accepting this fate she seems to be reluctant. Tanner takes a common biblical subject matter and attempts to paint the scene in a historically and “archaeologically accurate” way. His work features Mary as a young Palestinian rather than the usual idealized Anglo-Saxon woman. Tanner humanizes Mary and adds a touch of realism through his style and subject, subverting the allegorical qualities of the familiar biblical scene. He works to highlight realistic human aspects and expressions and modernizes well-known and frequently depicted biblical scenes. His disposition to do so stems from his experiences as an African American and as an African American artist.
Art is something that is often overlooked and never appreciated. What constitute as art depends on individuals and their interest. There are numerous art styles that contribute to the different styles of art. Famous artist Betye Saar and Charles White both contribute to the idea that art can be done in different ways, styles and methods. Betye Saar and Charles White were two African American artist who were very successful though they had two different styles of art.
A primary objective in measuring productivity is to improve operations either by using fewer inputs to produce the same output, or to produce:

This paper is a formal analysis of the Marble grave stele with a family group relief sculpture. It is a pentelic marble style relief standing at 171.1cm tall carved by a master. It is from the Late Classical period of Greek, Attic which was completed around ca.360 B.C. . I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because I’m mainly attracted to art and sculptures from the Greek era. The overall color used in this relief is ivory with a few cracks and pieces broken off. There is some discoloration which causes the color to come off as slightly light brown for most of the relief. The sculpture appears larger compared to the other sculptures in the art room. It represents a family which includes a man, his wife, and their
I believe that the artist is expressing himself when he is creating a painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. I also believe that art can be interpreted in many ways. One way that I thought an artist was able to express the way he thinks was through a drawing that was created by Otto Dix’s drawing Krigeskruppel (War Cripples). The time that Dix created this piece was the time of World War 1 (pg 40.) Dix was able to first see the effect that the war was having on soldiers. The drawing contains four men walking, to what seems to be downtown. The leader of the four men is smoking a large cigar and is needed the support of a cane because he is missing an arm and both of his legs, the next is man is also missing a leg and supporting himself by a cane.
Man Ray like many other artists did not care to have his personal life shown in his art. He wanted to be viewed and recognized for his work which included sculptures, paintings, and photography. Man Ray was mostly influenced by Stieglitz's photographs. Man Ray used a similar style to Stieglitz. He captured images that created an unvarnished look at the photos' subject. Man Ray discovered a new way to create his photos; by accident in his work room he discovered how to manipulate objects in his photos on pieces of photosensitive paper.
Not only that but she is a painter, embroiderer, mixed media sculptor, and a writer. Ringgold is a multi-talented and brave woman during her time in the 1950s; it was a time where sex and gender were not fully equal yet.
“Painting today is pure intuition and luck and taking advantage of what happens when you splash the stuff down. “- Francis Bacon. However when I learnt more about history of art and the way each movement and happenings in the world inspired artist to make new works, I was able to see much more than just a canvas with random paints and sketches. The interesting part about this concept is that each piece of art could be interpreted in many different ways. In contemporary art there isn’t right and wrong, each of us view and find different meanings and connections with artworks.
What drew me to his works was first, like many others, his bold use of color which caught my eye when browsing for art. I’ve always liked the bold high contrast look that these kind of artists like to employ. I had a few artists who were like this, but the exotic and historical subject matter helped me settle on him versus the more religious themes
In his text entitled “Modernist Painting”, Greenberg focuses on the development of painting between the 14th and 19th century and emphasizes on what distinguishes Modernist painting from previous forms of painting, particularly those of the Old Masters. Greenberg begins by relating Modernist art to Kantian philosophy claiming that, the same way Kant used reason in order to examine the limits of reason, Modernist art is when art became self critical because it uses the technique of art to draw attention to its status as art. Indeed, he explains how without this self-examination similar to that of Kant’s reflection on Philosophy, art would’ve been “assimilated to […] therapy” like religion, because
My senior year is quickly approaching and it is time to start looking for collages that I am interested in. The way that I will be most successful in college is to go to a collage that offers a great teaching program, has a soccer team, and has great dorms. Another big thing that I am looking for is going to a collage with an affordable price and closer to home. I want to be able to come home on the weekends to see family and friends. There are a few colleges in mind that I think will allow me to do my very best. Shippensburg, York, and Millersville all have what I am looking for in a collage. Now it comes down to the details that will allow me to to really pick my final choice.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
