Synthesis Essay When one has a strong opinion they will go to great extents to prove their point. It does not matter how much their opinion will hurt someone, they will still write about it and express how they feel. This is exactly what Tennessee Williams did. Tennessee Williams, in his play A Streetcar Named Desire, incorporates his own personal issues with drug addiction to bring to light real world grotesque problems, which influenced many writers in the Southern Gothic era. It is this unique style of writing that made Tennessee Williams one of the greatest playwrights of all time. Becoming the best writer isn’t easy when you don’t have motivation to write. He uses his characters to express his personal beliefs to the reader. In the quotation, “I can't stand a naked light bulb, any more than I can a rude remark or a vulgar action.” (Williams 60). Blanche expresses her feelings on how she sugar coats herself to make it so she is liked. It also sets up the theme of fantasy vs. reality. She plays a fake person(fantasy) but really has never changed (reality). She talks about the naked truth and that truth is that she has never changed she just changes the way she looks. Williams uses Blanche as a gateway to this idea and makes her seem like a doll. If it weren't for Blanche, Williams would not be able to get all of his personal feelings across the way he wants to. He also uses Mitch and Stanley to portray his ideas of men addressing women. He does this in the quote ”Poker should not be played in a house with women”(WIlliams 63 & 65). Mitch says that women and poker are a bad mix. This shows that Mitch is someone who believes women are soft and gentle and should be protected from the roughness of poker. But it also shows that he doesn't blame Stanley for his actions, but instead blames the poker game, for the reason of his foul actions towards Blanchee in this part of the play. Williams uses Mitch and Stanley to portray his look at men around women and how men are animals when it comes to them. I think that when Williams addresses his feelings in this way it makes the reader have more of an emotional connection to the work. Tennessee Williams makes his writing connect to you and has a real world message you can relate to. He doesn’t just write a play he writes a play to influence and change someone's life. In a critical essay by John Gassner he explains “ He invariably suggests Picasso’s dehydrated “Demoiselles d’Avignon” this is shown through Blanche Du Bois and how her life with her sister is full of humiliation when she mostly
