Supervision is the primary means how a supervisor supports their individual staff member or group of staff and ensures Standards of practice.The aim of the supervisor is to ensure their supervisee[s]to carry out their job roles effectively as possible. Supervision should have four functions: Executive Function:this role is to ensure Policies and Procedures are followed and that the required standards of practice are maintained.When the supervisor ensures this is being done,the supervisee[s]is held accountable for their work. Educational Function:the supervisor will see any learning needs of the supervisee[s]. Support Function:for care staff, so they feel they are supported and valued as a member of the team and that their practices and achievments are reconised. GSCC Code of Practice[2003]also refers to'effectively managing the supervising staff to support effective practice , good conduct and supporting staff to address deficiencies in their performances' There are a number of elements that make a supervision effective,and as a supervisor you should practice these skills- Have an agreement with the member of staff which states time'frequency,agenda and boundaries. Keep clear accurate records. Know and understand the organisations Policies and Procedures. Be approachable. Be organised and prepared. Supervision is a two process but remember this is the staff members time. Do not be confrontational.
